THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD - John 3:18-21
Introduction:
Concluding His talk with Nicodemus, Christ finishes His answer to the question of the heart of this religious Pharisee.
Culminating at the personal decision of faith in Christ, we see here the ever-crucial need of mankind, found only in the Light of the World!
In this passage we see how the light of Christ:
1. Confronts the Sinner
A. Confronted with Truth
The truth is that Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven!
The truth of the Creator indwells every human.
B. Confronted with a choice (v.
18)
Here we see the division of all mankind - believing and non believing
Just as Nicodemus was confronted with truth that was contrary to his background, we too must make a choice with the truth presented in Scripture!
2. Comforts the Believer
A. The believer is excluded from condemnation
The eternal security of the believer is God’s to secure!
B. The believer is exposed to more truth
3. Confirms the Unbeliever
A. Confirms their natural state
Condemned already - v. 18
Mankind is condemned at birth
Why would someone not accept the Gospel?
We love our sin!
Their deeds will be exposed and change will be necessary!
Our flesh does not like exposure!
We think that if we are exposed, that we will be insecure, unsafe, and vulnerable to the point of weakness
In reality, in our darkness we are in bondage, condemned already!
There is freedom in exposure to Christ!
B. Confirms their inevitable end
Romans 6:23a “For the wages of sin is death...”
A life lived without coming to Christ by faith, will inevitably end in eternal separation from the Creator!
C. Confirms their need of a Savior
Conclusion:
Genuine joy, comfort, peace, and security can only be found in the person of Jesus Christ!
Your response to His light will dictate not only the evidence of those characteristics in your life, but your eternal destiny.
How will you respond to His light in your life?
