Title: Dominated by Sin or by the Savior?

Title: Dominated by Sin or by the Savior?

Text:

The passion of the father cannot be overlooked here nor the obvious application of drunkenness
Opening Illustration:
Overview of the history of Proverbs
Particular emphasis of the chapter: :
Life can be easily dominated by sin
What we do with our inner self is key
Illustration:
Define addiction: (a) any activity that is so habitually persistent as to become more important than, or a detriment to, your relationship with God, other people or your duties and responsibilities OR (b) a voluntary enslavement to sin; a voluntary surrender to fleshly or worldly desires that becomes more important than glorifying God, and, when repeated enough, results in enslavement.
The sin problem of is widespread throughout the Bible
In , we find the first refusal of the Father when Adam and Eve willfully sinned against the LORD.
This subjected the hearts and lives of all subsequent mankind to have deceptive and wicked hearts.
Jeremiah 17:9 KJV 1900
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Matthew 15:16–20 KJV 1900
And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
We are not immune to this

Proposition:

Because our lives can be easily dominated by sin, we must submit our hearts to the dominion of the Lord.

The sin-dominated life is afflicted (v. 29, 32 - 35)

Note the listing of consequences in the passage

New healthy, sweet potato recipe…came out bland, ok...
Application:
I got out of it what I put into it.
Galatians 6:7 KJV 1900
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Transition: The sin-dominated life is afflicted

The sin-dominated life is no accident (v. 30)

The intentional belief in a lie
The comparison to Adam & Eve
The consideration of those who suppress the truth

Application:
Transition: The sin-dominated life is afflicted, the sin-dominated life is no accident

The sin-dominated life can be avoided (v. 31)

This is very practical advice
Illustration:
If a young man is struggling with the sin of pornography, we may suggest a software like “Covenant Eyes”.
Transition: Because our lives can be easily dominated by sin, we must submit our hearts to the dominion of the Lord.
Question: How can we have hearts that are dominated by the Lord rather than by sin?

Application:

Submitting our hearts begins by hearing & obeying the One who is Wise (v. 22)

Wisdom is what God has spoken
The father in Proverbs is passionate but our Heavenly Father is Love. It is out of this love that God has spoken.
Wisdom is personified even in the Old Testament
, Who God’s wisdom is, is made clear
What is God’s wisdom? The wisdom of God is Jesus Christ. This means that you and I cannot trust ourselves in attempting to overcome the sinfulness and weakness of our own hearts.

Submitting our hearts to the Lord continues by valuing that which is true (v. 23)

The battle does not stop the day that you get saved. The battle only begins.
Yielding to the Lord daily will cost you something:
the cost of daily acknowledging that you are to be under the dominion of the Lord - , - Let not sin reign in your mortal body...
The cost of letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly -
the cost of daily picking out your clothes and getting dressed-
the cost of selfless transparency -
We need the help of other brothers and sisters in Christ

Submitting our hearts to the Lord is the expectation of every true Christian (26)

The promise of every true Christian is that they WILL not be dominated by sin.
Because our relationship with sin has fundamentally changed, we now have the promise that sin will not dominate us if we yield ourselves to the Lord.
Some are wondering, if this will really work, if you are a Christian, but you have the Lord’s promise here.

Conclusion:

Who or what is dominating your life/mind/heart right now?
Will you recognize the love of your Heavenly Father?
Christians, some of you are dominated in your minds?
Some of you are under the dominion of something or someone else because you have never received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Will you come today?
Others, who have received Christ, are under the dominion of something or someone else because you are not willing to give what you cannot keep to gain that which you cannot lose Your time in submission to Christ and his word is non-existent. The word of Christ must dwell in you richly.
