Why is it significant that Paul calls himself a “Slave of Christ Jesus”?

Philippians 1:1–2 ESV
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
CSB Study Bible: Notes Circumstances of Writing

The traditional date for the writing of Philippians is during Paul’s first Roman imprisonment (AD 60–62); few have challenged this conclusion.

Paul planted the church at Philippi during his second missionary journey (AD 50) in response to his “Macedonian vision” (Ac 16:9–10). This was the first church in Europe (Ac 16).

Doulos, the common NT word for servant. Although in Gr. culture it is most often referred to the involuntary, permanent service of a slave, Paul elevates this word by using it in its Heb. sense to describe a servant who willingly commits himself to serve a master he loves and respects

Someone look up
Exodus 21:3–6 ESV
3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out alone. 5 But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.
Some of the most valuable ministry Paul ever did was ministry when he wasn’t free to choose what he would do that day!
You put Paul in prison and get the book of Philippians!
How is it possible in your life for God to put you on the sideline and use you sitlmaniouly.

What is the distinction between an overseer and deacon?

Philippians 1:1–2 ESV
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Why is it an important distinction.

Because the Bible makes the distinction!!!!
Overseers/Pastors/Elders - See over the spiritual needs of the congregation.
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Elders/Overseers - Shepard the church (They have a responsibility for oversight of the body)
Deacons - Serve the church.

What are saints?

How is holiness emphasized in the bible as the standard for God’s people in both Old and New Testaments?

Phil 1:3-
Philippians 1:3–5 ESV
3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

What is the difference between happiness and Joy.

Joy is a by-product of life with God. Joy is not found by seeking it as an end in itself. It must be given by God (Job 8:21; Ps 4:7; 36:8).

What brought Paul great joy?

Gospel Partnership brought Paul true joy!
Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
phil 1 6

When Paul speaks about the work of God in verse 6 what is he certain God will do?

Why is it important to know that God preserves His Saints?
