THE MEANING OF THE 23rd PSALM Verse 1

P
Psalm 23:1–6 KJV 1900
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
This morning I want to take apart the 23rd Psalm verse by verse for the six times we meet. and today we will start with verse 1.
Psalm 23:1 KJV 1900
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psalm 2
Without a doubt the 23rd Psalm is the most famous of all the Psalms.
Many Christians know it by heart.
It’s heard at funerals.
It’s recited to people in hospital beds.
It has provided comfort and hope to millions of stressed believers.
King David isn’t the author of all the Psalm, but he did author this Psalm.
David wrote this Psalm from his own personal experience as a young shepherd boy.
He was put in charge of his fathers sheep.
David knew sheep
David knew what it took to be a shepherd.

I. The Lord Is My Shepherd

This shows a Personal Relationship with the Lord.
Born again Christians are the Lords sheep.
The Lord is the Good Shepherd, so we are His Sheep.
Not dumb, frightened passive animals.
But obedient followers wise enough to follow one who leads us, into the right places and in right ways.
Jesus Christ Himself, refers Himself as the Good Shepherd.
John 10:11 KJV 1900
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
John 10:11
John 10:
John 10:27–28 KJV 1900
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Jesus gave His life for the WORLD!
does not focus on the animal like qualities of sheep.
but the discipleship qualities of those who follow.
When you recognize the Good Shepherd
Follow Him, He will not lead you astray.

II. I Shall Not Want:

This shows us the Lord will supply our needs.
He didn’t say he will supply our wants.
He will supply our provisions
Roof over our heads.
Food on the table.
Utilities.
Clothes to wear
He’s going to guide us.
Prayer
The Bible
A place to worship

Phi
Philippians 4:19 KJV 1900
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
The obedient followers are wise enough to follow the one who leads us into the right places and the right way.
When we allow the Lord, our Shepherd to guide us we have contentment and peace.
