Intro to the Proverbs: (recap our teaching)

Intro to the Proverbs:
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
proverbs
The Usefulness of the proverbs: V1-6
To know wisdom and instruction
To understand words of insight
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
IN righteousness, justice, and equity
to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth--
Increase in Learning and obtain Guidance
to understand the words of the wise and their riddles.
But there is a greater meaning in which Christ is defined or personified.
His attributes are described and personified.
The Requirement: V7
You cant discern any of these without this requirement!
*The Fear of the Lord*
Psalm 19:9 ESV
9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.
Proverbs 14:27 ESV
27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.
“Tis Grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved”
proverbs 14L27
When they say the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”… that should bring comfort to the believer. The believer knows without GRACE we have every reason to fear the Lord.
(for it is written “All have fallen short of the glory of God”
Fools despise “wisdom and instruction”
To the world this will roll off there brows without a second thought for they are fools spiritually and Mock God with there actions, lifestyle, and words.
Mental Objection #1 Fearing God.
Q: How are we supposed to fear God and love him at the same time?
Analogy:
Many people have the wrong view for the “fear” of God, Most people think of fearing God like this, a boy comes home from school brining a picture he made home and gives it to his father, and his father backhands him across the room.. the boy fears his father, not because of his justice or steadfastness, but because of his wickedness and inconsistency.
God Is so Great and on a level of His own, that the fear believers have of their Lord is like a boy who comes home from school, who was disciplined by the principle for acting out, The boy knows his father is loving, the boy knows his father is consistent, but the boy knows his father is just, and therefore he fears his father knowing that he will be disciplined with in love and not out of anger.

How do you fear the Lord?
Our Theology, our prayers, our attitudes come from our View of Christ, come from our view of the Godhead. In all that the proverbs have to offer us, the single most Greatest point they offer us is how they depict our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, and how that applies in our lives.
KEY TEXT:
Vs 20-21 Wisdom shouts in the street, She lifts her voice in the square; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
How do you picture wisdom being shared?
How do you think wisdom
looks like?
sounds like?
feels like?
The Lord uses broken vessels,
Vs 22-
I am pretty confident that you don’t picture wisdom shouting from the streets.
But The Lord uses the foolishness of men to accomplish His glory, so that no man may boast!
In fact Jesus did this himself for John the Baptist when he was aressted.
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
MARK 1:14-
vs 22
“How long , O Naive ones, will you love being simple minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing, and fools hate knowledge?
refer back to vs 15^^
Romans 1:22–24 NASB95
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
Romans 1:22–23 ESV
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
vs 23-4 “Turn to my reproof, behold, I will pur out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. “Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention”
1 how you can use this
You can stretch out you hand and share the good news with your friends here at Lincoln Square, the outcome doesnt dictate how often or if we call out!, I know your desire is for everyone to hear and everyone to be saved!
It is mine as well!
But if we don’t speak the truth repeatedly to our friends and family it will be easier for them to continue suppressing the truth.
was spoken to professing christians.
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Matthew 7:13 ESV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
2 How God used this
Proverbs 15:31 ESV
31 The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.
He went into the streets and taught the men and women, sometimes he was excepted, sometimes he was thrown out of the city, but our lord Jesus Christ
3 You also are commanded to do this to give an account for your faith, where you may not go to the city gates you can go to
behold
2 Timothy 1:7 NASB95
7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
2 Timothy 1:17 ESV
17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me—
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The begining of the proverb
Proverbs 1:8–10 NASB95
8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; 9 Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck. 10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.
This is a great verse for our children,
This is a great verse for who solomon is addressing
But Even GREATER this is a verse furthers thes
Who does God Call the fool, and the Wise?
God Calls the Unbeliever the fool.
there can be no wisdom or knowledge apart from Christ.
God Calls the Believer the Wise or the Knowledgeable.
The Deeper meaning of the Proverbs.
Yes the proverbs teach us principles on how to live our lives correctly and how to have wisdom, but throughout the proverbs you can see Christ speaking, His character, and you can learn about His attributes
Mental objections?
Q: I see people who have “wisdom” and have been very successful in life but are not believers, how does this fit in?
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
A: Beginning of knowledge, not beginning of riches. The Deeper meaning is that if you don’t have Christ as your savior you are insane and have no knowledge.
A:
A2:
Who has Knowledge?
Proverbs are truisms, but with Jesus they are absolutes.
How is God described in this proverb,
Moralism
Greater Meaning (application to Christ)
There is an aspect of moralism, and application to our lives.
But there is a greater meaning in which Christ is defined or personified.
His attributes are described and personified.
Scriptura interpres Scriptura
But Jordan cant interpret Jordan
Circular reasoning why its important and why it is okay for the use of ultimate authority.
