Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies
Has anyone ever read this book?
This book tells a story about how a group of well-educated, well-behaved English schoolboys who crashed onto a deserted island with no adult survivors.
Would the boys develop a society of peace or something else?
As the story develops, we see these well-educated, well-behaved English schoolboys start to fight for power, hunt and kill each other.
The theme of the book shows the imaginary possibilities of our hearts.
Left to ourselves we constantly reject God and any authority over our lives. We constantly make decisions on our beliefs of right and wrong.
7 The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight; they forgot the Lord their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.
8 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.
9 The Israelites cried out to the Lord. So the Lord raised up Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s youngest brother, as a deliverer to save the Israelites.
10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he judged Israel. Othniel went out to battle, and the Lord handed over King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram to him, so that Othniel overpowered him.
11 Then the land had peace for forty years, and Othniel son of Kenaz died.
The judges saved people from the consequences of their sin but could not change the cause of their sin. Jesus is the Savior and Judge who takes upon Himself the consequences of our sin and then offers us new hearts that seek His righteousness.
How could a generation rise up that did not know the Lord or what He had done?
They did not pass on their stories of faith and God’s faithfulness.
Their children might have rejected what their parents believed, choosing something more enticing.
What are the dangers of deciding for ourselves what is right for me or right for you?
This idea that something can be right for you but not for me morally, is not logical.
Especially when you think about issues like racism, human trafficking. Not only is this not logical but its wrong on the grounds that God exist and He alone determines what is right and wrong. He sets the rules to the game.
What are some modern day idols that we see redirect people’s worship away from God?
Sin doesn’t stop us from worshiping, it just redirects it to something else.
Sin is a heart problem and we need Jesus to fix it.
Prayer: God give us courage to live in holiness no matter what excuses we might want to make.
