Who We Are

Colossians 3:1–4 NIV
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Colossians 1:1–4 NIV
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—
Out of God’s love for us, Christ came and purchased our lives and restored us tot he Father. We have been made new in HIm. We were dead and we are now alive. In this newness of life, our purpose has shifted and changed. We are no longer for ourselves. We serve for the kingdom. We are made in the image of Christ and we are fulfilled in the same manner as He is, doing the Father’s will.
We have been given new position. We are now citizens of heaven.
We have a new ambition. We are fulfilled as we constantly seek the things of God.
We have a new life. We have been raised with Christ and have been engrafted in Christ.
We have a new hope. We are clothed in Christ’s righteousness, not our own. Our hope is in Him and not ourselves.

Who We Were

Colossians 1:
Colossians 3:5–11 NIV
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
As a result of who we now are, alive people, reborn in Christ, we must guard ourselves from returning to the things that defined our old nature. We can not be fulfilled by these things any longer. When we turn to these self indulgent things, we lie to ourselves. We tell ourselves that we are not remade in Christ, our hope in only in the temporary and we are not citizens of heaven but rather earth.
In each one of these pursuits, we deny God’s supremacy and we take over His throne in our lives. When we pursue sexual immorality, we deny the fulfillment of sex in the manner by which God designed it. We are saying to God that there must be more. The same is said as we pursue greed and lust. God your provision is not enough.
As we give ourselves over to these momentary desires, we are no longer focusing on the things that are above. Our hearts are given only to the moment and our lives are not focused on the hope that is to come or the excitement that only God can provide.
God has made us one people, His people in the pursuit of the same thing, Him. Nothing else will satisfy. Story of Detroit Pistons Game.

How We Are to Live

Colossians 3:12–17 NIV
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Instead, we are to chase after the things of God. We chase after these things not to replace the things spoken above but rather because these are the things that we are designed for. These are the characteristics of the new life. It is in these things that we are capable of living life to its fullest. It is these things that give us a foretaste of what is to come. It is these foretaste that carry us through the brokenness of this world and it is these things that set us apart from the world.
We are to live life abundantly, not in want. This only occurs as our perspective has shifted to its proper place, upward. We do this by living in unity. We are called to build one another up, to testify of Christ, to shift our eyes and invite someone to look in the same direction. We gather for this purpose to sing songs that teach our hearts of things above of whose we are.
