Theme - In troubled times it is important to have an Untroubled Heart. Jesus tells us that that kind of a heart obeys His commands. Not because it is compelled to but because of Love.

INTRODUCTION

As we look at these verses Three ideas stand out
1. Love's Behavior
2 An Untroubled Heart is obedient
3. The Untroubled Heart has understanding of and possession of The Holy Spirit.
John the writer of this Gospel has been writing to early Christians about what Jesus had to say about the conduct and conditions in the last days of His Life. While the disciples listen and respect Jesus they do not understand Him. So the questions about where He is gong and why they can't come with Him now and why them and not the world come up. They wanted to know the way. They wanted to physically see the Father. They could not understand why they had been chosen to hear the truth and not others.
So Jesus starts the teaching on a conditional note,"If". The condition is set at the beginning of the teaching. "love Me" If you love Me beyond the human idea of love but deeper and more concrete., Informed by God and His love for His people you will conform to by your activities by showing you conformity to my commands
V.15 Condition - If you love Me,
Person - You
Act - will obey what I commmand.
True love has this affect on a person. Keep on loving shows forth in continual obedience not out of being compelled but out of the very heart of love.
V.16 AND
- I will ask the Father
AND
He will give you another Counselor
Purpose - to be with you forever-
A lawyer to argue before the court for you. This is another person like Jesus. Just as Jesus will become our Advocate with the Father so the Holy Spirit will be our personal Advocate from the Father to us and back to the Father. This is not about gifts as much as divine personhood. Like Jesus but also different. This one will not go away He will be with you forever
V.17 Detail - the Spirit of truth.
the world cannot accept Him
Reason - Because
it neither sees Him
NOR
knows Him
Contrast - But
you know Him
for He lives with you
AND
will be in you.
The Holy Spirit is the one who brings us to the recognition of our need for Jesus and then lives in us to instruct us about how to live for Jesus. The world never comprehends how Jesus can be in heaven and in us at the same time. That is because they do not know the Father nor the function of the Holy Spirit. He does not inhabit an organ or develop a new organ for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit inhabits us and works in and through us. Taking the things of Christ and revealing them to us.
V.18 Fact - I will not leave you orphans
I will come to you
This coming to them was specifically true at the resurrection but potintially true at Pentecost. There is no specific time and place for this to occure but it keeps happening where ever God calls His people to life and fellowship.
V.19 Time - Before long
Fact - the world will not see me anymore
Contrast - BUT you will see me.
Reason - Because I live you also will live.
There is here a very important set of contrasts. The first has to do with see the Lord or not seeing Him. This is a contrast in faith. They saw Jesus as their Lord and savior. Their knowledge is small but growing. The world had no faith in Jesus and so for them to kill Him was to end Him.
The second set has to do with living. We live because He lives. He is the eternal one and in Him we have eternal life. There is also here the double use of the word behold. In the first part of the verse the disciple are told the world will not see or behold Jesus any longer but the the disciples will. The world cannot see because Jesus will appear unto the disciples only after the resurrection. Later the disciples and we also see or behold Jesus now with the eternal eye. We have life in and through Him. We do not see Him but one day the eye of faith will become the eye of sight and we shall behold Him our savior and Lord.
V.20 Time - On that day
Act - you will realize that I am in My Father
AND
you are in Me
AND
I am in you
Jesus now moves the conversation forward from the present moment to the future. After the resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit the disciples will come to know the depth of the relationship between Jesus them and the Father. Ahead of them awaits the death and burial of Jesus. There hearts will sink and life will stand still. Then Easter morning arrives and they are joyful and blessed. But for them to understand all that Jesus is and has done. To understand that they are to carry on His ministry will take the coming of the Holy Spirit and the recognition of a second coming. This same Jesus will so come in like manner.
V.21 Person - Whoever
Act - has My commands
AND
obeys them
Declar - he is the one who loves Me.
Fact - He who loves Me will be loved by My Father,
AND
I too will love him
AND
show Myself to him."
Verse 15 told us "If you love me keep My commandment" now verse 21 says "Whoever has My commandments and Obeys them he is the one who loves me." Again the reminder is given to us that this love relationship flows from the Father to the Son and to us from the Son. Now we can know Jesus more deeply as He reveals Himself to us.
