Introduction:

I missed you guys.
Who here had a good holiday season?
I hope and pray it went well.

Who here made any New Year Resolutions?

By a show of hands, what were they.
I want to hear at least 3.

What is the point of a New Year Resolution?

The point is to reflect upon your past year, and look at things that you regret.
Things that you did wrong and that you can improve upon yourself.
Then you use this idea of a starting point to better yourself in areas you can control.

Is there something magical about a New Year?

No, but most people look forward to new years for the idea that they can start over.
Lots of people think that when the clock strikes midnight that they are going to magically become more disciplined, focused and accomplish more.
Lots of people think that when the clock strikes midnight that they are

This has led to the modern saying “New Year…New Me!!!

This is just a common sentiment.
People realize that in order to have success, they have to reinvent themselves.

Humans are desperately looking for this idea of “newness”

We are always looking for newness, because:

We have regrets.
Things didn’t go the way we wanted.
We ended up cutting corners and falling short from our expectations.

So we try and have New Years Resolutions to solve our failures.

This is our own attempt to fix this.
No, but most people look forward to new years for the idea that they can start over.
Lots of people think that when the clock strikes midnight that they are
Many people try every year, but fail.

The truth is that we fail at even keeping goals.

The interesting thing is that when failure happens, there is surprise.

We fail, because we are born to fail.

We are born with a sin nature.
This makes us already defective.
Our programming is wonky from day one.
This is because of our flesh and sinful nature.

Failure makes us want new things and new beginnings.

Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
The more I mess up, the more I want a fresh start.
The more I realize I have not been living like I should, I want to start over.

Who here made any New Year Resolutions?

But, then the year starts and time flies by, and I keep living like how I did before.
What were they?, by a show of hands.
The

In order to get to heaven, you need to realize your failure and make a new resolution.

The whole point of the Bible is to help us realize that we are born with a spiritual disease called sin.
It means missing God’s will, mark, mold, etc. for my life.
This put us at enmity with God, and the consequence is eternal separation from His love and favor,
We now need to understand, that God loves us, and He has made a way to be reconciled to Him.

This comes through repentance.

Admitting that you are wrong.
Acknowledging that you have sinned and your need for Jesus.
Lots of people do not want to admit that they are wrong before God.
Their pride gets in the way, and makes this impossible, almost.
The first step to accept Christ is repentance.
Literally a change of mind, and attitude towards our mistakes and sin.

Then we can accept Jesus.

In doing so, God takes all of our past, present, and future mistakes and punished them on the cross with Jesus.
Jesus died in your place, and all of your sins.
Every lie, greed, selfishness, theft, evil thought, is buried and dead in the grave that Jesus resurrected from.

Now we are offered a new life…but it is so much more than that.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2 c
New Creation is the Greek words Kainos Ktisis:
Kainos= New:
new
in regard to form:
recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn
recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn
recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn
In regard to substance:
as respects substance
as respects substance
of a new kind, unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of
of a new kind, unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of
of a new kind, unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of
Ktisis: Creature/Creation:
You are now a different species.
A new creature or creation.
Think about what that means.
You are no longer what you think you are.
No longer just a human.
No longer just an animal.
You are a whole new class.
A whole new species.

Old things have passed away, and all things are new!

What a beautiful statement.
Not many more beautiful words have ever been said.
That is what this means.
Not hard to understand is it.

This is what the power of Christ will do for you.

What are these old things.

1 Peter 4:3 NKJV
3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.
1 peter 3:
Galatians 5:19–21 NKJV
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Many believers are made new, but living like their old self.

This is a shame because Christ paid the ultimate price so that we will not do those things anymore.

Alisa got a brand new Samsung Galaxy S9 for Christmas.

She was super excited for the latest technology and all that comes with it.
She has it for no more than a day, but it started to bug out.
She would open an app, but then the phone would randomly go to the lock screen or turn off.
It was very slow and random.
This is not what she was expecting, or what she ordered.
We then traded it in and the phone works better than expected.

We are like a phone that wonks out to God when we live like our old sinful selves.

It is not what He ordered.
It is not what we were made to do.
We were redeemed to be used by God, but try and live our lives how we want, and God cannot use us.

We do not cash in on the power that He has given us.

Ephesians 4:22–24 NIV
22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

It is like you have these new luxurious clothes that fit, but want to wear your old nasty, itchy, smelly, diseased rags.

Paul paints the picture of the newness in Christ like putting on new garments.
The problem is that the old clothes are nasty and are not a fit anymore.
We need to put these things on.
It has to be our choice.

So many believers think that Jesus is going to consume them like a puppet, and take away their free will.

The truth is that we have to be obedient to Christ.
He is not going to force us to walk in newness of life.
God is not going to live the newness of life for you.
God is not going to live the newness of life for you.
He has given you the things, and ability to live like Him
Through His Holy Spirit.
The power of His word.
But you still need to put these things on.
He has given you the things, and ability to live like Him
He will empower you, but you need to want it.
Faith leads to action, and He will help get you there.
He has given you all that you need.
Philippians 2:12–13 NKJV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
We need to realize that we have a responsibility to walk.
God is working in us though.
I am not saying it is based off of our works.
It is us receiving the gift and then using the gift.
1 Peter 4:1–5 NKJV
1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. 5 They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
1 peter 4:1-
Personal example.
I got saved in January 19, 2007.
I had the word of God, went to church, and God was changing me.
But I did not completely surrender my life to Him.
Many times I still had anger outbursts, cursed, did sketchy things.
My family got on my nerves, and would often instigate me to be handle things the way the world often has us....like Jerry Springer.
This led things to escalate to my family saying that I reminded them of my dad.
This was my worst fear.
I wanted to be the farthest thing from that man.
I went to my youth pastor, and he showed me this verse.
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
I had become a believer, but had the tendencies of my flesh.
I was still the same monster I always was.
I begged God to change me, and He told me that in order to change, I needed to crucify myself.
Then I would be dead, and the life and power of Christ would be able to live through me.

Do we let Jesus live through us?

That requires us to have to die to our desire, and will.
Then He can truly live through you.

I was a believer still letting my flesh live for part of my teenage years.

God knows we are still going to fail.

But the point is to be walking with Him.

Believers should treat everyday like it is New Years.

Lamentations 3:22–23 NKJV
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
2 corinthians
He will give cover us in mercy and grace .
He will fill you in what you are lacking.
This gives us second chances, to not be consumed by His wrath, and the more we walk in His grace, the more we will develop self control.

We aren’t going to end with a discussion, but with a worship song for reflection and prayer.

You guys need to go before Jesus and reflect if you are putting on the newness that Jesus has provided for you.
If not, you need to pray and settle that in your heart.
Christ is going to give you the power.
I will be here if you need prayer, or need to talk.

Believers should treat everyday like it is New Years.

Every single morning, He
