A Winter In the Word The Ancient Made New #5 I Got My Way! Oh No! Tell about a time when you got your way, and lived to regret it. Explore this curious story from Genesis 32. Today, you ask some of the questions. What else do you want to know about this story? Genesis 32:22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. Questions?____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. 28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and have overcome.” 29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” 31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Questions?____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ What characteristics do you see in Jacob?___________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Is Jacob’s new name a positive thing or a negative thing?_______________ ____________________________________________________________ There was a time when Paul wrestled with God. Were the two outcomes the same, or different? 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 Because of the extravagance of those revelations, and so I wouldn’t get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan’s angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn’t think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me, My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness. Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become. (The Message) Same or different? Explain.______________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Did even Jesus wrestle with God? Matthew 26: 38 Then Jesus said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Did Jesus wrestle with God?______________________________________ When it comes to the practice of submission, are you more like Jacob, Paul, or Jesus?_____________________________________________________ What is at the root of resistance to submission?______________________ ____________________________________________________________ Submission is the ability to lay down the terrible burden of always needing to get our own way.
