Building materials

Jesus is the sum of all things and as the sum we need to know who, how, why, and what to do with the sum of all things. Today we are looking at Jesus: He is the gospel and what that entails. A reminder to the saved, an instruction for the seeker.

Building materials matter (Mt16:16-18)
Build on Jesus for He is the way (Jn14:6)
Build on Jesus for there is no other way (Act4:12)
Build on Jesus for He gives us the way and confidence (1Jn5:13)

Building materials matter (Mt16:16-18)
Matthew 16:16–17 NASB95
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
Build on Jesus for He is the way (Jn14:6)
Build on Jesus for there is no other way (Act4:12)
Matthew 16:18 NASB95
18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Hell, the gates of hades does not stand a chance against the Christ, the Son of the Living God! Building materials matter for we need to build on the truth. This morning we are looking at the building of the gospel, why we need it, what it is, what to do with it and the results of it. So enjoy the journey, and be sure you keep the outline for it is a clear way to be able to teach someone the gospel.
Build on Jesus for He gives us the way and confidence (1Jn5:13)
Building materials matter (Mt16:16-18)
Build on Jesus for He is the way (Jn14:6)
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Build on Jesus for there is no other way (Act4:12)
Jesus tells us He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and there is no other way.
Build on Jesus for He gives us the way and confidence (1Jn5:13)
Building materials matter (Mt16:16-18)
Build on Jesus for He is the way (Jn14:6)
Build on Jesus for there is no other way (Act4:12)
Jesus had told us he is the way, there is no other way. Luke tells us the same thing after the church had been born.
Acts 4:12 NASB95
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
Building materials matter (Mt16:16-18)
Build on Jesus for He is the way (Jn14:6)
Build on Jesus for there is no other way (Act4:12)
Build on Jesus for He gives us the way and confidence (1Jn5:13)
God has given us His Word so we may know the way and have confidence in the way.
1 John 5:13 NASB95
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
If you died today do you know with confidence where you stand? If you were at the gates of heaven what would you say if asked “why should I let you in?”
I’m a good person, I don’t do things wrong intentionally
I go to church and even put money the in offering plate when I go
Hey, I am a good moral person, I live by the 10 commandments
I’m good, I help others, I give to charities I believe are worthy.
In reality I can’t do it, there is nothing I can do to earn, buy my way into heaven. It is only by Jesus who is the sum of all things that we can get to heaven. God’s Word gives us everything we need to get there and know we are going and how to get there.
Build on knowledge that eternal life is a gift, not earned, not deserved, but freely given (Rom6:23)
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So why is this free gift so important? First we need to understand the gift and our need for the gift. We have a problem, God has the solution to the problem and offered that to us. God’s scheme of redemption fulfilled in the Way, the Truth and the Life Jesus!

Man’s need for gift of grace

Man has a problem, sin, God has the solution, His grace that is needed and provided. So, let’s identify the problem first.
_______________________________________________________
Sin problem it is a violation of God’s law (1Jn3:4)
Sin problem knowing right thing to do and not doing it (Jm4:17)
Sin problem, we all have it (Rom3:23); we are all guilty (Jam2:10-11)
Sin problem the results in death (Rom6:23)
Sin problem, death problem, eternal separation from God (Rev21:8)
______________________________________________________
Sin problem it is a violation of God’s law (1Jn3:4)
Sin problem knowing right thing to do and not doing it (Jm4:17)
1 John 3:4 NASB95
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
Sin problem, we all have it (Rom3:23); we are all guilty (Jam2:10-11)
Sin problem the results in death (Rom6:23)
Practices is not a single sin, it is a lifestyle of sin
Sin problem, death problem, eternal separation from God (Rev21:8)
Sin problem it is a violation of God’s law (1Jn3:4)
Sin problem knowing right thing to do and not doing it (Jm4:17)
James 4:17 NASB95
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
When you know the truth, you know the truth, the way and the life and you do nothing with you, it is sin, we cannot claim ignorance, for those days have passed, but we will talk about that more in a few minutes.
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin problem, death problem, eternal separation from God (Rev21:8)
Wages are something that you earn; we sin, we earn death. We cannot deny it.
Sin problem, death problem, eternal separation from God (Rev21:8)
James 2:10–11 NASB95
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
For we all miss the mark, that is sin, missing the mark, we all fall short, by breaking one of God’s laws we are guilty of them all. And we earn our wages, death, eternal separation from God.
But wait, there is hope. I told you God has a solution to our sin problem, that solution is God’s grace

God’s grace is the solution

We have been told the problem, we know we have a need. Now having identified the problem we can look at the solution to the problem. God’s grace, God’s mercy is the solution to our sin problem.
_____________________________________________
It is in God’s mercy that grace is offered (Rom6:23)
It is God’s perfect sacrifice that is the solution to our sin problem (1Jn4:9-10)
God’s perfect sacrifice from the cross, to the grave, from the grave to sky (1Cor15:1-4)
God’s solution comes with His patience too (2Pt3:9)
God’s solution though offered not many accept it and walk in it (Mt7:13-14) and there is no excuse (Rom1:20)
God’s solution grace does demand obedience (Mt7:12-23; 1Jn2:15-17)

God’s solution grace does demand obedience (Mt7:12-23; 1Jn2:15-17)
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Eternal life in Christ Jesus; God’s greatest gift
It is in God’s mercy that grace is offered (Rom6:23)
It is God’s perfect sacrifice that is the solution to our sin problem (1Jn4:9-10)
1 John 4:9–10 NASB95
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God’s perfect sacrifice, God’s solution so we may live through the solution.
It is in God’s mercy that grace is offered (Rom6:23)
It is God’s perfect sacrifice that is the solution to our sin problem (1Jn4:9-10)
God’s perfect sacrifice from the cross, to the grave, from the grave to sky (1Cor15:1-4)
I know that line is partial from a worship song, but it fits. But, better yet is the scripture.
God’s solution though offered not many accept it and walk in it (Mt7:13-14) and there is no excuse (Rom1:20)
1 Corinthians 15:1 NASB95
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,
God’s solution grace does demand obedience (Mt7:12-23; 1Jn2:15-17)
1 Corinthians 15:2–3 NASB95
2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:4 NASB95
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
It was on the cross the the price was paid, by his death our salvation, our eternal life was made possible, it was in his resurrection that it was made available.
God wants all to have the solution, the free gift of grace and He is patient with us, the church, the ones who hold the free gift to be given, so that we may share it with others.
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
God’s will is all should come to repentance, meaning all need repentance, but not all receive God’s solution do they? They are not looking for it, eventhough it has been made evident
God’s solution though offered not many accept it and walk in it (Mt7:13-14) and there is no excuse (Rom1:20)
It is in God’s mercy that grace is offered (Rom6:23)
God’s solution grace does demand obedience (Mt7:12-23; 1Jn2:15-17)
It is God’s perfect sacrifice that is the solution to our sin problem (1Jn4:9-10)
God’s perfect sacrifice from the cross, to the grave, from the grave to sky (1Cor15:1-4)
God’s solution comes with His patience too (2Pt3:9)
God’s solution though offered not many accept it and walk in it (Mt7:13-14) and there is no excuse (Rom1:20)
Romans 1:20 NASB95
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
There is no excuse, God has always made Himself known. Now we need to know that not all obey the command to do the Father’s will.
Matthew 7:21 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Matthew 7:22–23 NASB95
22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
God’s solution grace does demand obedience (Mt7:21-23; 1Jn2:15-17)
Matthew 7:21 NASB95
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Mt7
Matthew 7:22–23 NASB95
22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
It is the ones who do God’s will that will live forever
1 John 2:15–16 NASB95
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
1 John 2:17 NASB95
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
Eternal life is found in the doing the will of the Father. So do the will of the Father and receive the gift of grace.

Receiving the gift of Grace

Building on the foundation, the right foundation comes with using the right materials. So here are the instructions as laid out in the scripture.
Faith (Rom10:17); proper faith and belief (Jn6:28-29; Jn6:40); faith that leads to works; works from faith (Jm2:26)
Faith, how do we get it, here is a reminder
Romans 10:17 NASB95
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
We need to have the right faith, the right belief
John 6:28–29 NASB95
28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
Belief in Jesus whom God sent
John 6:40 NASB95
40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
Believe in Jesus and the resurrection, that Jesus will raise us up on the last day.
Faith that produces works, not works producing faith (Jm2:26)
Faith leads to repentance (Lk13:3; Lk24:46-47; 2Cor7:9-11)
Faith that comes from hearing and believing the right things leads us to repentance.
Luke 13:3 NASB95
3 “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Without faith, without belief, without repentance you will perish with the sin problem.
Luke 24:46–47 NASB95
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
The gospel message has been proclaimed after Christ died and rose again and the message of repentance for the forgiveness of sins was preached.
2 Corinthians 7:9–10 NKJV
9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
2 Corinthians 7:11 NKJV
11 For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Faith, to repentance and repentance to confession (Rom10:9-10); confessing Jesus (Act8:37; Mt10:32-33); another work from faith is baptism, our point of salvation (Act2:38; 1Pt3:21)
Faith, to repentance and repentance to confession (Rom10:9-10); confessing Jesus (Act8:37; Mt10:32-33); another work from faith is baptism, our point of salvation (Act2:38; 1Pt3:21)
ROm10:9-10
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Another thing that is the will of God and a work that is from faith is confessing Jesus; confessing Jesus that comes from your heart
Acts 8:37 NASB95
37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
Act
When we do then Jesus will confess us before the Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 10:32–33 NASB95
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
Another work from faith is baptism, yes it displays our faith but it is more importantly the place of our salvation where God does the work and our sins are forgiven.
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Or as Peter put it
1 Peter 3:21 NASB95
21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
it is at that point we are transferred out of the darkness and into the kingdom of the beloved Son. When we become His possession, His inheritance, when we are “in” Christ and He is “in” us.

The Gospel is about being “in” Christ!

God’s plan to save sinful man, God’s scheme of redemption; the gospel is all about Jesus. Being in Jesus comes with more than just our salvation, that is the starting place, look at this about being “in Christ.”

And add to that
Romans 13:14 NASB95
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
When we put on the Lord He equips us
2 Peter 1:3–4 NASB95
3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

From faith to in Christ through baptism
From faith to heart prick (Act2:37)
From heart prick wanting to be baptized for forgiveness of sins (Act8:37-38)
It is for the believer who knows his sins and repents (Act2:38)
Is baptized into Christs death (Rom6:3)
Who is raised as a new creation (1Cor10:17) to walk in newness of life (Rom6:4); because He made you alive (Col2:13)
By faith baptism is a work; God’s work made by God’s hand (Col2:11-12; TIt3:5-7) so that we can become heirs!
__________________________________________________________
I’m sure you have heard the saying “you are not saved by works and baptism is a work. So, baptism negates the free gift of grace then since it is a work. Remember where we started about God’s plan, it started with faith. So coming from a place of faith. It is not for the unbeliever, it is for the believer who has had their heart pricked (Act2:37) that believes from their heart and wants to be baptized (Act8:37-38); the believer who knows he is a sinner and repents (Act2:38) for baptism is the place you are baptized into Jesus death (Rom6:3) so you can be raised to walk in the newness of life (Rom6:4) as a new creature or creation ( 1Cor10:17); all by the work God does (Col2:12-13) which he again, made you alive (Col2:13) in which HE saved you, washed you, regenerated you (Tit3:5-7) so we may be made heirs
(Invitation slide-1)
IF the Lord were to come back today the scripture clearly tells us we can know where we stand. For Jesus is the gospel, so if you have not put on Christ yet, today is the day.
For Christ provided the way - the cross
Provided the place - the church
Promised the result -eternal life in heaven with Him
Acts 22:16 NASB95
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
Act:22:16
Or if you need to renew your dedication to Him. stand now as we sing.
