What is the role of the sabbath in the lives of Christians?

The Decalogue

8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: 9 You are to labor six days and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates. 11 For the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.

Made it holy, sanctified, elevate or exalt.
If all others are holy why is this one not?

reformed theologians, quakers, and puritans.

2 So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed. 2 On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it he rested from all his work of creation.,d

Creation is finished. completed. 6 24 hour days. no further creation; besides miracles noted in the Bible where He creates wholeness.
He rested.  Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the whole earth.

went to work to preserve His creation.
there is nothing about Adam resting, people resting. no need, he lives in paradise. no sabbath law for Adam. not listed as a day of worship. No job for anyone, only for God.
3. He blessed that day. Elevated above all other days. It is a special memorial to His creation. To remember Gods perfection, created the universe in 6 days of perfection.

Why do we use 7 days in a week?

Desanctify the 7th day. Make it unholy.
Saturday is a day to appreciate the creation.
Sunday is a day to understand God as the redeemer.

21 They gathered it every morning. Each gathered as much as he needed to eat, but when the sun grew hot, it melted. 22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, four quarts apiece, and all the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. 23 He told them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil, and set aside everything left over to be kept until morning.’ ”

24 So they set it aside until morning as Moses commanded, and it didn’t stink or have maggots in it. 25 “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a Sabbath to the LORD. Today you won’t find any in the field. 26 For six days you will gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”

27 Yet on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they did not find any. 28 Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commands and instructions? 29 Understand that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he will give you two days’ worth of bread. Each of you stay where you are; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 The house of Israel named the substance manna.

The Ten commandments

OBSERVING THE SABBATH

12 The LORD said to Moses: 13 “Tell the Israelites: You must observe my Sabbaths, for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, so that you will know that I am the LORD who consecrates you. 14 Observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Whoever profanes it must be put to death. If anyone does work on it, that person must be cut off from his people. 15 Work may be done for six days, but on the seventh day there must be a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD. Anyone who does work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. 16 The Israelites must observe the Sabbath, celebrating it throughout their generations as a permanent covenant. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the Israelites, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.”

The sabbath is a symbol.
The sabbath is a symbol of the Mosaic covenant.
the Noahic covenant, promised He would never flood the earth again.. the sign.. a rainbow.
Abrahamic covenant sign, the participational sign was circumcision.
The sabbath is only a sign of the Mosaic covenant.
Hosea said “you must keep a heart of love and devotion to God to keep the sabbath”
What was the sign for?
A reminder of creation. to remind the Israelites that they had forfeited paradise. Obey this law and you will be blessed. Righteous behavior can regain their lost paradise. when they rested they would remember:
a perfect creation, a paradise of God dominated by righteousness which had been forfeited by sin and could only be regained again by righteousness.
Not for everyone.
For Israel only. examine themselves to the law of God and bring them to repentance. The Law Giver.
The Sabbath was a reminder of God’s perfect creation, but also a reminder of how we are marred. Sin. the realm is stained by sin and we are groaning -Paul.
circumcision was a way of saying you need to be clean. cleansed. this is the same. Obviously they cant keep the law but they should be driven to please God.
Unique to the people of Israel.
When Jesus came, everything changed.
He didn’t cleanse the temple, He abolished the temple. He eliminated the priesthood. He ends the sacrificial system. He ends Judaism. All of it including the sabbath.
Lets watch how Jesus treat the sabbath?
anyway He wanted.
He is the mediator of the new covenant, a better covenant.

LORD OF THE SABBATH

12 At that time Jesus passed through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick and eat some heads of grain. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”

3 He said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry: 4 how he entered the house of God, and they ate the bread of the Presence—which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests? 5 Or haven’t you read in the law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice,,y you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

the consecrated showbread. All the priests are working.
This law is not moral, it is symbolic. κύριος kyios

He can do anything He wants. Transition of Jesus. Everything that is part of Judaism is coming to an end.

A SABBATH CONTROVERSY

14 One Sabbath, when he went in to eat at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, they were watching him closely. 2 There in front of him was a man whose body was swollen with fluid. 3 In response, Jesus asked the law experts and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they kept silent. He took the man, healed him, and sent him away. 5 And to them, he said, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 6 They could find no answer to these things.

They thought healing someone on the sabbath was in violation, where Jesus heals on the sabbath purposely. He strikes a blow to this symbol. Healing on the sabbath is not shown as a law in the OT.

LORD OF THE SABBATH

23 On the Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way, picking some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

25 He said to them, “Have you never read what David and those who were with him did when he was in need and hungry—26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests—and also gave some to his companions?” 27 Then he told them, “The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. 28 So then, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

The sabbath was created to thank God for His creation. to show gratitude and repent and seek forgiveness.
A blessing to man to rest. to examine his life against the law.
It is not a moral law.

THE THIRD SIGN: HEALING THE SICK

5 After this, a Jewish festival took place, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 By the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda in Aramaic, which has five colonnades. 3 Within these lay a large number of the disabled—blind, lame, and paralyzed.

5 One man was there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and realized he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to get well?”

7 “Sir,” the disabled man answered, “I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”

8 “Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk.” 9 Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk.

Now that day was the Sabbath, 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath. The law prohibits you from picking up your mat.”

11 He replied, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

12 “Who is this man who told you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?” they asked. 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.” 15 The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

a light straw mat.
the mishna the oral torah. Jesus had him violate the sabbath. He didn't have to on the sabbath, he did it purposely. They persecuted Him for this. He did whatever He wanted on the sabbath. He brought down the whole system.

17 Jesus responded to them, “My Father is still working, and I am working also.” 18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him: Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

This is a claim to be God, to be a deity. My father and i are doing our work before your eyes. calling God His Father, making himself God. they charged him with this and eventually killed him for it. God over the sabbath.
Jews were strict sabbath keepers. they found no rest in the sabbath. they found no repentance the laws were only a shadow of hope.
Jesus brought the rest. under the new covenant, we have gathered into rest with the creator Himself. we have been given righteousness. we have ceased all work and efforts to gain our salvation.
Jesus did away with the sabbath.
What about the rest of the new testament?

WARNING AGAINST UNBELIEF

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

Today, if you hear his voice,

8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

on the day of testing in the wilderness,

9 where your fathers tested me, tried me,

and saw my works 10 for forty years.

Therefore I was provoked to anger with that generation

and said, “They always go astray in their hearts,

and they have not known my ways.”

11 So I swore in my anger,

“They will not enter my rest.”,r

God’s true rest didn’t come through Joshua, Moses only through Jesus Christ. Heavenly rest. salvation

12 Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception. 14 For we have become participants in Christ if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start. 15 As it is said:

Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.,x

16 For who heard and rebelled? Wasn’t it all who came out of Egypt under Moses? 17 With whom was God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

the salvation rest comes through faith. by faith in God.
unbelief forfeits rest.
in the new testament rest is not a day of the week, it is salvation.

THE PROMISED REST

4 Therefore, since the promise to enter his rest remains, let us beware that none of you be found to have fallen short. 2 For we also have received the good news just as they did. But the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith.,aa 3 For we who have believed enter the rest, in keeping with what he has said,

The 4th commandment is never repeated in the new testament. it was a sign and not a moral law. a symbol. to lead the people to rest. new testament is for the soul when hearing the good news preached.

9 Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people. 10 For the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his.

There are only 2 concepts of getting into heaven.
You either work your way in or it is a gift.
For the jews they were working.
but when you enter the rest of grace and the rest of faith, works cease. entered into permanent rest. new testament emphasis.

5 One person judges one day to be more important than another day. Someone else judges every day to be the same. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 Whoever observes the day, observes it for the honor of the Lord. Whoever eats, eats for the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; and whoever does not eat, it is for the Lord that he does not eat it, and he gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives for himself, and no one dies for himself. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and returned to life for this: that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living. 10 But you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.,r 11 For it is written,

As I live, says the Lord,

every knee will bow to me,

and every tongue will give praise to God.,t

12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

those things, dietary laws are part of a passing scheme. dont force them against their conscience. let them, until they have come to the fullness of their freedom.

9 But now, since you know God, or rather have become known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elements? Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again? 10 You are observing special days, months, seasons, and years. 11 I am fearful for you, that perhaps my labor for you has been wasted.

why are you going back to the festival traditions. the sabbaths.
the most definitive explanation. Abrahamic sign, circumcision has been abolished.

2 Take note! I, Paul, am telling you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all.

11 You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, 12 when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses.

the covenant passes away, because that covenant cant save.

16 Therefore, don’t let anyone judge you in regard to food and drink or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of what was to come; the substance is Christ.

don't let anyone hold you to the sabbath, it is part of the system that included the temple, the priesthood and the sacrifices. it is gone. it only pointed to the fact that God was the creator, that paradise was lost. that you were under the judgment of the law. it didnt provide that, it is only provided in Jesus Christ. you no longer need the symbol or sign you have the rest. the true rest.
there is not one time in the new testament that commands to keep the sabbath. the other 9 are repeated many times in the NT. there are no rules, prescriptions, instructions about behavior on the sabbath in the NT.

THE JERUSALEM COUNCIL

did not require new believers to observe the sabbath.
the apostles never commanded anyone to observe or warned or held anyone to the sabbath.
one exception. The sabbath should still be used to honor God as creator. the first day is the day we celebrate God as a redeemer. we dont use sunday in the mosaic sense as a sabbath. it is a ministry of death.
the sabbath Saturday honors God as a creator and Sunday honors God as our redeemer.
open our eyes to your word
help everyday be a sabbath to us.
make it unmistakable. help us live in rest from our works. amen.
