INTRO:
Recap of last week
God finishes what He starts
Asking the question, What does it mean to live for Christ?
God starts a good work and finishes it
Continue in Philippians, How we are to love one another
Have 3 students read 2 verses: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11
And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.
8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.
9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,
10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Philippians 1:
And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Loving as Jesus
Loving as Jesus
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
john 13:33-34
Paul doing this in
Paul desires to see the church in Philippi grow in their relationship with Christ
Now Christian, your religion claims from you that you should love as your Master loved. How can you imitate him, unless you love too? - Charles Spurgeon
Without love for one another we have not received the love of Christ
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 15:35
To have love for others reveals we follow Christ
Does this mean if I just love someone I’m a follower of Christ?
NO
many different types of love
One true form of love
Look at what the Bible calls love
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:
All attributes are found in Christ
vs. 6 crucial
Love is Christ
Love for Others Leads to Their Good
Love for Others Leads to Their Good
9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,
10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Philippians 1:9-
Paul’s affection for the church led him to desire:
Their love to grow
They grow in knowledge and discernment
They approve what is excellent
They will be pure and blameless
They are filled with the fruit of righteousness
Our love towards others should desire good things for them
good things are that which God calls good
To live is Christ - Loving others and desiring them to be changed by the Gospel of Christ
The Message of the Cross
In vs. 9 Paul spoke of the Philippians love, what does it mean to have an abounding love? How does this look in our lives? What is personally hindering you from walking in a love like this?
we see the attributes of love, what do you believe is the easiest part of this list? Why? What’s the most difficult? Why?
According to what does it look like to love people in a way that you seek their good? Why do we struggle with desiring this for others? Why do we struggle to pray for others the way Paul prayed for the Philippian church?
