Christ has demonstrated His authority
His popularity has sky rocketed
The Crowds are now flocking to Him
His ministry is in full swing
Today we are going to look at His calling of the twelve
And we are going to begin to look at The Sermon On The Mount
The Calling of the Twelve
The Calling of the Twelve
Apostles - Requirements for being an apostle
No indwelling of the Holy Spirit yet
How do you become an apostle?
Walk with Jesus?
Seen the resurrected Christ
Must be called
What about Paul then?
Why am I telling you this? Because there are people out there who are saying they are apostles - they are not
No one after the apostles died claimed to be an apostle until the modern day charasmatic movement
3 Lists - Mark, Luke, Acts
Similarities - All begin with Peter, all end with Judas
What can we learn from the list?
Notice the diversity - Fishermen, tax collectors, teenagers, political guy,
Two stick out - Peter and Judas
Both betrayed Jesus but only one repented
Overview of the Sermon on the Mount
Overview of the Sermon on the Mount
You have to understand the sermon as a whole to understand its details
First of 5 Sermons given in Matthew
Understand the issues in Israel
The Jews, particularly the pharisees thought they were saved because the were Jewish (descendents of Abraham) and the “followed” the law
They understood neither true righteousness or the demands of the Law
Jesus is going to accomplish 3 things in this sermon
1. Going to Show them what true Faith Righteousness looks like
2. Going to do exposition of the law - to demonstrate to them - you are not actually keeping the law
3. End with the call to place their faith in Him
The Beatitudes (5:1-12)
The Beatitudes (5:1-12)
Character of True Faith and True repentance
Everything he is going to say is completely counter intuitive what the Jews believed their lives should look like
As we look at each one of these, I want to consider the antithesis of each
