Walking with Jesus pt 3

Memorization

Church we are to be reading our Bibles

They serve as a guide for us through life

Psalm 119:105 NASB95

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Church we need to be praying

prayer is communication with God

If communication is so important then where is has our prayer gone church

Matthew 21:13 NASB95

13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbers’ den.”

Church we as a church are to be a house of prayer

As individual believers we are to be a house of prayer

Church we must be praying

I hope you have caught on that these are things that you need to be doing that you have to do if you want to be growing in your walk with Jesus

I understand that you are not perfect

I hope you understand that I am not perfect

You will miss a day here and a day there

you might even miss a few days, but do not be discouraged

pick up the next day and begin fresh

Church I understand there will be moments your prayers feel like they are only hitting the ceiling and going no further up towards heaven

I understand when all you can do is to listen during your prayers

But I want to encourage you to continue to spend time listening and talking with God

Church it is when we do those things that we begin to grow in our walks with Jesus

This morning we will wrap up this series for the time being

This morning we will look at another discipline that you need to be doing

Memorization

Psalm 119:9–11 NASB95

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. 10 With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. 11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.

So if the Bible is intended to be a guide for our lives, then it answers the questions we have

One of those questions we ask is how to we keep our way pure in this day and age

vs 9 asks that question and answers that same question

So what does it look like to keep it according to your word

First we have to be reading the word, but then in vs 11 we need to bury and treasure it in our hearts

That is memorizing Gods word

That is hiding it in our hearts, that is tucking it away in our memory

See you have long term memory and short term memory

Your short term memory is what you read, but you long term memory is what you memorize

It takes less energy or thought process to activate your long term memory, because it is almost second nature if you will

If you want to live your walk with Jesus you will hide Gods word in your heart so you will do it like it is second nature

Does that make sense?

If you want to live out what the Word of God says then not only are you reading it but you are memorizing it so it takes less energy to bring it out

Then it becomes second nature

Deuteronomy 11:18–19 NASB95

18 “You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. 19 “You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Church we talked about this last week or the week before but you moms and dads, and you wiser Christians we are to be teaching them to our sons and daughters

we are to be discipling them talking about what they are learning and what we are learning

I think we talked about moms and dads asking your kids what they learned, kids are to be asking you parents what you are learning

Guess what parents if you have nothing to say it will say a lot to your kids, so be paying attention

We are to again impress the word of God on our hearts

Anyone feel asleep on their arm or hand that had a stamp on it

The stamp transfers to your head or check, because you have impressed it on there

That is what we are to do with the word of God

We are to impress it on our hearts

Meaning we are to be reading it so much and going over it so much that is transfers to our hearts and heads and hands

Do you see church that if you expect to grow in your walk with God you need to be memorizing

So practically pick a verse and memorize it

I am not expecting you to memorize the whole Bible right away, but I do believe that we are to memorize scripture

not just for the sake of memorizing things but so we can live them out!

Colossians 3:16 NASB95

16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

This is why we memorize, so we can grow

we dwell on the word of God so we can encourage one another, so we can live it out the word of God

So what does it look like

start with one verse

Some people will call them power verses but verses that mean something to you and go from there

We use those power verses when the storms come we can anchor ourselves to the Word of God

Church you and I need to be reading the Word of God

I think we have said it but there is no other way to take in the word of God

Along with reading you and I need to be praying

which is simple communication between you and God

meaning you talk and you listen

prayer is not just talking

finally church if you and I desire to grow in our walk with Jesus then we need to

we must be memorizing the word of God

We memorize it so it is in our long term memory so we can carry out what the Bible is saying to us!

Closing

maybe you are here and these last few weeks have not made sense

It might be because you do not have a relationship with Jesus

See without a relationship with Jesus you cannot have a walk with Jesus

so maybe you are here and you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus and He is calling you into one

There will be people down front to open up the Word of God and walk you through so you can begin your walk with Jesus

or maybe God is calling you to join this church and make this your official church home

or maybe you simply need to spend some time in prayer at the altar
