Getting ready for the Lords Supper.

Intro: When I going up my mom would call us in for supper. (Whistle) We had to get ready for supper. There were somethings we were required to do before we could set down at our moms table.
First, we had to wash our hands. Now she didn’t tell us, we know we had too. Sometimes she would ask after we sat down.
In the summer time we didn’t wear a shirt. Shirts were required when we sat down to eat.
Different families have different requirements for getting ready for supper. Turn off T.V. Put away cell phones.

We need to have the right attitude for the Lord’s Supper. VS 17

1 Corinthians 11:17 KJV 1900
17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
1 Corinthians 11:17 NASB95
17 But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse.
Paul is writing to the believers at the church at Corinth. He was dealing with some issue that the church had. Here he deals with the way the where taking the Lords Supper. (Elab they didn’t do it like we do today)
a. The problems that they were having was not pleasing to Paul.
“I praise you not” “Because you come together not for the better, but for the worse.
b. There somethings Paul could praise them for, but the issue at hand had to do with the manner in witch they were handling the Lords Supper.
c. There was no praise for them here. There was a spiritual effect of their meeting for the Lords Supper. This was meet to be a great spiritual time, but the spiritual effect was the lack of.
d. What had happened? A big part was their attitude. We will see this in the upcoming verses.
e. Our attitude has to be right when we take of the Lords Supper.
f. The L.S is personal. Elab the last Supper, just Jesus and His disciples.
g. For you, and me, is about a personal relationship with Jesus.
h. It can’t be just something to do, it something we because of what Jesus did for us.

We need to be united to be ready for the Lords Supper. VS 18

1 Corinthians 11:18 KJV 1900
18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
I Corinthians 11:
1 Corinthians 11:18 NASB95
18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it.
1. An older pastor told that one Sunday it was Lords Supper day. Everything had been prepared. But there were some things going on within the church. Something between some of the people. They (the church) were not together in unity.
a. At the end of the service, when it was time for the Lords Supper, he let the church know, that it would not take place on that day.

partly—He hereby excepts the innocent. “I am unwilling to believe all I hear, but some I cannot help believing” [ALFORD]: while my love is unaffected by it [BENGEL].

b. There were some problems, “some divisions” among you”
c. What Paul is talking about here, was those who were following different leaders. The believers were divided.
2. There all kinds of things that can cause division in church. It can be about the pastor, it can be over the music. It can be ministries within the church.
a. It can also be between people in the church. If that is the case, you need to get it right. Unity is important, the lack can cause serious problems.

We need to be focused to be ready for the Lords Supper. VS 20-23

1 Corinthians 11:20–23 KJV 1900
20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
1 Corinthians 11:20–23 NASB95
20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you. 23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
Think of Jesus and His disciples (last supper) Breaking of bread and drinking of the cup. Now this group had turned it into a feast. Eating and drinking.
VS 21 “taking his own supper” There were the poor, who may have not been able to bring anything. LOOK AT LAST PART OF VS 22
a. The Lord’s Supper had become become something that the Lord had not intended.
b. They had lost focus on the true meaning. It is about remembering what Jesus did for us.
c. It can also be that the lack of focus is not taking the Lords with the wrong attitude, it could be something going on in your life that has caused a lack of focus. Your focus may be on your problems and not what Jesus has done for you.
d. Those things you need to give to God.

We need to be reverent to be ready for the Lords Supper. VS 24-25

1 Corinthians 11:24–25 KJV 1900
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
I Corinthians 11L24-25
1 Corinthians 11:24–25 NASB95
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
This is not a funeral service, Jesus is no longer died. It is a memorial service because we are to remember.
a. It is to be taken seriously, not so seriously that we sit around like monks.
b. If their are kids present they should sit with their parents.
c. It is time that is serious, but but also a time of praise and thanks.

We need to be expectant to be ready for the Lords Supper. VS 26

1 Corinthians 11:26 KJV 1900
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
ICorinthians 11:
Expectant: having or showing an excited feeling that something is about to happen, especially something pleasant and interesting.
Expectant: having or showing an excited feeling that something is about to happen, especially something pleasant and interesting.
One day the Lord Jesus will return. THE RAPTURE.
I Thessalonians 4:
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 NASB95
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
Have you ever waited for someone? Someone you were excited to see? Maybe a good friend, family member, someone that is very special to you.
a. When you are waiting for someone, you are preparing for them. You everything to be just right when they arrive.
b. When we take of the Lords Supper, we are doing it with the expectation of His return. But, are you preparing for His return?

We need to be inspected to be ready for the Lords Supper. VS 28

1 Corinthians 11:28 KJV 1900
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

VS 28

Marine Corps: Inspections. Every week, room inspection. C.O
a. Equipment and trucks inceptions. I.G This was the big one. Sometimes in was not very detailed. Other times, very detailed.
b. But, even in if it was a detailed inspection, you could hide a problem. It may look good on the outside, but there could be some serious problems.
c. In the life of a Christian, you may be able to hid things from people, make the outside look good, when there is sin on the inside. That you cannot hid from God.
2. Wall locker inspections. Everything had to be in the right order.
a. You could just put your uniforms in your wall locker the way you wanted it. It had to be the way the Marine Corps wanted it.
b. There was Marine Corps hand book that should you.
c. In our walk in our life as a Christian, it can’t be the way we think it should. It has to be Gods way. We have His word to show us.
3. Uniform inspections: Utilities. (Camos) Pressed with a crease. Brass shine, boots had to shine..
Dress uniform. Everything had to look sharp. You had to look good for the one that was standing before you. The inspecting officer.
a. Today as you stand before the Lord, He is the one that you have to look good for. That is way everyday, we seek Him to have Him show us where we are spiritually.

We need to look at ourselves to be ready for the Lords Supper. VS 29-20

We need to

1 Corinthians 11:29–30 KJV 1900
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
I Corithi
Supper time when was growing up. We knew what we had to do. Elab.
a. If we didn’t there was a price to pay.
b. Lords supper. A joyful time, time to celebrate, a time to remember. A time to reflect on our own lives.
