Acts 7:35
Acts 7:35 ESV
“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
John 1:17
The law or Torah was given by God to Moses who then presented it to the people. And yet as we read through both the old and new testaments we a close association between Moses and the Law. So who was Moses?
Acts 7:35 ESV
“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Moses was God’s chosen instrument to deliver the people from bondage in Egypt, to lead them out and to rule over them as His chosen and appointed leader. Moses was an intermediary between God and the people, highly regarded in the peoples eyes and yet rejected by the people as the verse above indicates.
This is the Moses who God appeared to in the burning bush, who God sent to Pharoah to demand the freedom of His people. The one through whom God performed miracles and announced the plagues on Egypt. The one who led the nation of Israel out of Egypt and through the Red Sea and the same Moses to whom God gave the Torah to pass along to the people. Moses was God visual representative to the people, the one who spoke for God and acted on His behalf. God used Moses to inform the people of the bread from heaven and to provide water from the rock.
But Moses was also a fore shadow of Jesus. In fact Moses said in Deuteronomy before he died that God would one day bring a “prophet” like him to deliver the people. Moses delivered the people from bondage and slavery in Egypt, Jesus delivers the people from bondage to slavery to sin. Moses gave the people manna, Jesus is the true bread from heaven who gives life to the world. Moses gave the Law, Jesus fulfilled the law. Moses introduced the sacrificial system, Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for all mankind.
