1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” 2 And He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”
2 And He said to them, “When you pray, say:
‘Father, hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Ill give you a little more context to this text
6 “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. 9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
(NASB95)
Notice that the place of prayer is the place of relationship.
9 “Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Notice that the place of prayer is the place of relationship.
To into you inner champers, close the door and speak to the father who is in secret.
This is a private place of access. That one can only access through relationship.
When we pray Lord teach us to pray we are also saying Lord teach us to access that place that is reserved for sons and daughters alone.
7 and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’
7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.
7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.
7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.
Now this is not about eloquence and fancy words. This is from the reality and deepness of ones heart. We are praying to the father not so other can hear and think we are great.

John Wesley says about this text,
“We must always take care that we do not do the least thing with a view to our own glory. We must take care that the praise of men has not place in any of our works of mercy. If we seek our own glory, if we have any desire to gain honor from men in it, whatever is down is not done unto the Lord. He does not accept it.” John Wesley
do not use meaningless repetition
do not use meaningless repetition
John also adds, “Do not think that the result of your prayers depends on the length of them.”
I think of Samuel’s words when he says “Man looks at the outward appearance and God looks at the heart.”
Lord you have to teach us to pray.
8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Now this leads to a question. If God already knows what I need why then should I pray at all?
Matthew Henry says,
“He is a Father that knows our case and knows our wants better than we do ourselves.”
When we become like Mary and Lay all of issues at He feet and trust Him. We don’t pray because God need to know as much as we pray because we need to lean.
Leaning on Him as a provider
Leaning on Him as a healer
Leaning on Him as a Deliverer
And I am leaning on this teacher to teach me how to pray and how to come into the inner room/secret place.
God it all dependent on you.
One of my favorite verse is in Song of songs 1:4 how many time have a preached this
4 “Draw me after you and let us run together! The king has brought me into his chambers.” “We will rejoice in you and be glad; We will extol your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you.”
4 “Draw me after you and let us run together!
The king has brought me into his chambers.”
“We will rejoice in you and be glad;
We will extol your love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you.”
Notice her request Draw me after you!
Now this is the same request the disciples made when they said “Lord teach us how to pray”
She make a request to be drawn revealing her neediness and inability to know on her own.
Lord I need to be drawn. Lord I need to be taught.
This is the desire of her heart. It maybe weak but this is what she needs and wants.
“Draw me after you and let us run together! (NAS) (The Message)
4 Take me away with you! Let’s run off together!
Notice the conversation
She prays, “Jesus, draw me away.” She longs to be drawn close to God’s heart in deep intimacy as an extravagant worshipper who loves God with all her heart.
It the same command that Jesus make when he says go into the inner room.
God will never command us to go anywhere that His grace won’t lead us.
Although we have the desire and the willingness to pursue after Him, we cannot help but feel a lack of strength for the pursuit.
I think Watchman Nee says it best when he says
Watchman Nee says,
“His drawing power is our pursuing power.”
Her desire is to be drawn away (intimacy) a cry for life changing encounter.
And We will run together. (This involves partnership and minister)
The King has brought me into His chambers. We will be glad and rejoice in You.
We will remember Your love (affection) more than wine. ()
An encounter gives a reason to rejoice.
And knowing we are a family and that we are all running together we say Our father.
He knows what we need because he is in heaven and acknowledging He is in heaving is acknowledging Him as KING
The word "King" indicates that before we know the Lord as our Beloved, we must first know Him as our King.
Only he has control and power to bring us into the secret place therefore we holloweth his name
We lift up! We elevate!
By lifting Him up, it brings His kingdom down.
32 “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”
And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.
Notice Jesus’ words, “Hallowed be Thy name”. Hallowed in the Greek is hag-ee-ad'- zo. To make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate: - hallow, be holy, sanctify
We translated this word in English to “Holy” and “Sanctify”. We see here adoration, which points to praise.
God desires our highest praise and all of our adoration. Prayer must begin with praise.
And praise and worship come out of the knowledge of who He is. We must know Him.
When we know Him, we praise Him. And then, we pray to Him...connecting to His heart.
Hallowed be Thy Name. To bless, to make holy, and to sanctify His name. We join ourselves to that mission.
The place of prayer brings us into the place of the presence of God.
We must return to the place of adoration as a community and as a church.
To the place of adoration, the place of thanksgiving, the place of praise.
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His loving kindness is everlasting. Give thanks to the God of gods, for His loving kindness is everlasting. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for His loving kindness is everlasting.
When we hallow His name His Kingdom comes and He reigns above all things. Your name is greater than it all—higher than all. Thy kingdom come Thy will be done on heaven and on earth. This is a prayer of anticipation.
