Every form of life has it’s enemies. Insects have to watch out for hungry birds, and birds must keep an eye on hungry cats and dogs. Even human beings have to dodge and fight germs. The life that is real also has an enemy, that enemy is sin.
Sin is refusal to submit to the law of God. Lawlessness, or independence of the law, is the very essence of sin.
Sin is not simply outward disobedience; sin is also inner rebellion or desire. we are warned about the desires of the flesh and of the eyes and about the pride of life in .
1 John 2:16 NASB95
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
The new Testament calls the Christian life a walk, the walk begins with a step of faith when we trust Christ as our Savior.
Faith:
- Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
- For without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon says, “a little faith will take our souls to heaven, but great faith will bring heaven to to our souls.
Christians must learn to walk in the light. And the fundamental difficulty involved here is this matter sin.

The message (v5) This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

When we were saved , God called us out of darkness into light
states - But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light
Those who do wrong hate light, because when light shines on us, it reveals our true nature.
God, no sin, lived a perfect life
For Him - Him meaning Jesus
God is light - A common metaphor in the OT and Jewish literature for Gods perfection. God’s light serves as a beacon for the righteous and leads others to Him.

darkness Serves as a metaphor for sin, unrighteousness, and wickedness

Contrasts between saying and doing (Conditional sentences)
If we say we have fellowship with Him (v6)
But if we walk in the Light (v7)
If we say we have no sin (v8)

Be true to ourselves and to God (v6) If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

What do we lose for being untrue?
We lose the Word, stop doing the truth, truth turns to lies
Thy word is truth, but a person who lives a lie loses the word
Lose blessing from the bible, cannot understand the Bible if your walking in darkness.
We lose fellowship with God and Gods people.

New King James Version (NKJV)

‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

Walk in the Light (v7) but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (). La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation.
Walking in the light involves honesty, obedience, and love
Involves following the example of Christ and walking as He did
we are to purify ourselves even as he is pure
Living on the earth as Jesus did

We have an advocate (v9) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Christ is our advocate in heaven, the Holy spirit is our advocate on earth
Advocate - Lawyer
Walking in the light makes life so much easier and happier. When we walk in the light, we live to please only one person God, Jesus says in “I do always those things that please Him. If we live to please ourselves and God, we are trying to serve two masters which never works.
