Purpose: The purpose of this text is to show us of the final judgment pending the Nations and the judge will be Jesus Christ .
Introduction:
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
Judgment
People confuse this passage by calling it “the General Judgment,” thinking it’s the same as the White Throne Judgment of .
1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
There is no such thing as a general judgment in the Bible.
The saints have their works judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ immediately after the rapture ().
1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

The unsaved dead will be raised to face Christ at the White Throne Judgment at the close of the 1,000 year reign of Christ ().
This judgment is that of the Gentile nations at the close of the Tribulation.

Gods covenant with Abraham
In God’s covenant with Abraham, He promised that all nations of the earth would be blessed through Israel ().
During the tribulation, God will be purging Israel, so that at the close of the seven-year period, there will be a believing remnant waiting to meet Christ.
The nation of Israel will receive her King, and Christ will establish His kingdom on this earth, as promised in , , and other places in Scripture.
The question is which of the Gentiles shall enter into this kingdom.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Note the three groups of people in this scene: (1) the sheep, (2) the goats, and (3) those whom Christ calls “My brethren” (v. 40).
“My brethren” are the believing Jews who witness for Christ during the Tribulation period.
Since they would be enemies of the Antichrist, yet sealed and protected by God, they would suffer great persecution.
They would not be able to buy or sell, and thus would be hungry.
They would flee from their homes () and would need places to stay.
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Without jobs and without the mark of the beast (), they could not secure clothing and would be naked. Many would be cast into prison.
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Those who believe and those who don`t
Many Gentiles during this period will believe the message of the Jewish missionaries (; ).
They will then show love and mercy to these suffering Jews, by feeding, clothing, and visiting them in prison, etc.
Just as Paul had persecuted Christ by persecuting His saints (), these Gentiles will show love for Christ by showing love for His people.
These acts of kindness are not good works that save them (); they are proof of their faith in the message and their love for Christ.
The Gentiles who rejected the messengers, rejected Christ (see , ). Their end is outer darkness—hell.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Judging the Nations
It’s important to note that Christ will not judge the Gentile nations en masse as nations, but as individuals.
The word “nations” in v. 32 is neuter in the Gk. while “them” is masculine, referring to individual persons. There will not be “sheep nations” and “goat nations,” but “sheep” separated from the “goats” in every nation.
While it is true that God has judged entire nations for mistreating the Jews (Egypt, Babylon, etc.), the truth here is that individuals within the nations will be judged, and only those who have evidenced faith in Christ by their love for the “brethren” will enter into the kingdom.
They will have life eternal; the others will go away into eternal punishment.
Summary: Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
