Stone Pillars
bound·a·ry noun; plural noun: boundaries; a line that marks the limits of an area; a dividing line; a limit of a subject or sphere of activity. Do you hear much about them anymore? (Pro22:28; Deu19:14)
28 Do not move the ancient boundary Which your fathers have set.
Boundaries, today in in our society we don’t hear about, or see boundaries displayed very much. People, including children do as they please and do not consider the consequences until after the fact. Then they act surprised by the price, the consequences they have to pay for the choices they make.

Historically, Israel would set up stone pillars to mark a land, to denote the boundaries of a person, a land, and there were grave consequences if you moved a boundary, a marker, a pillar.
14 “You shall not move your neighbor’s boundary mark, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess.
(continue illustration of dad) - I used to think he was old fashioned and now today I don’t think so. I think he was principled and tried to instill morals, values that were necessary for life.
Boundaries are more than a stone pillar, they are a reminder too. (crossing the Jordan entering the promised land)
Have you set reminders in your life? If so, can you give an example?
In our ever changing world it is just that, ever changing, but God’s Word, God’s truth, God’s commands are true and unchanging. People think the Bible is outdated, it is old fashioned and some want to update it to mean something that God never meant it to mean in the first place. But as a Christian today, do we look like the old fashioned Christians of previous generations? So, tonight we are going to look at some markers of an old fashioned Christian.
He Believes the Bible
He Believes the Bible
Be an old fashioned Christian, believe the Bible is the word of God, Jesus is the Son of God and He has given us everything we need to get us to glory in heaven.
The old fashioned Christian knows:

The Bible is the Word of God and it is true (Psm119:160)
He knows it is given with purpose (2Tim3:16-17; Eph2:10)
He knows it gives Him commands to follow (MK12:30-31)

The Bible is the Word of God and it is true (Psm119:160)
160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.
Notice it does not say “some” of the Word but the “sum of Your Word” we need to know the bible, we find in the word the righteous ordinances that are forever true.
The old fashioned christian would never even consider that the Bible has errors or that it contradicted itself
He accepted it as the Word of Truth
He learned, he obeyed ad followed it’s commands

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
He knows, he believes that it is inspired by God, or God breathed and is profitable for all things to equip for every good work
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
The Bible is the Word of God and it is true (Psm119:160)

He knew the command of love, believed it and lives it. He loves God, loves others in both word and deed.
The things that the Bible forbids he did not do for he knows, understands the grievousness of sin.
Next thing about the old time Christian
He takes His Christianity Seriously
He takes His Christianity Seriously
The Christian is not to look like the world, remember we are peculiar people. The old fashion Christian was not afraid to be different. He knew he was different.

He knew the old was gone and the new had come (2Cor5:17)
He did not love the world, but did the will of God (1Jn2:15-17)
He knows, like the apostles that the world hates him (Jn15:19)
He was not conformed to the world but transformed (Rom12:2)
He loves the Lord and keeps His commands (Jn14:15)
He is not a Sunday Christian but lived out his Christianity daily (Ps119:57)
Keeps His words by keeping Gods Word and keeping from evil (Ps119:101; Pro4:4)
He knew and understood the importance of meeting together (Heb10:25)

He knew the old was gone and the new had come (2Cor5:17)
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
He understood that there was something different about himself now. He was not who he used to be he was different.

Different is not just an outside thing, it is an inside thing, it is a heart thing!
He did not love the world, but did the will of God (1Jn2:15-17)
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
An old fashioned Christian knows the world and the things of this world are passing away, but the eternal things of God will never pass away.
He knows, like the apostles that the world hates him (Jn15:19)
19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
He is not worried about what the world thinks of him, he wants to impact the world for the Lord.
He is not conformed to the world but transformed (Rom12:2)
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
He takes his Christianity seriously and knows that when he renews his mind through God’s Word he is able to prove what is the perfect and acceptable will of God, and do those things.
He loves the Lord and keeps His commands (Jn14:15)
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
He loves the Lord and proves it by keeping the Word of the Lord, the commands of the Lord.
He is not a Sunday Christian but lived out his Christianity daily (Ps119:57)
HE loves the Lord and lives out his Christianity daily, not just on Sunday, he lives out his faith, his commitment, his promise.
57 The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.
He has vowed, promised to keep God’s Word for he knows the Lord is his portion.
Keeps His words by keeping Gods Word and keeping from evil (Ps119:101; Pro4:4)
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word.
Keeps God’s Word because he has vowed to, and he restrains himself from every evil way.
He does to allow himself to put himself in situations that may cause him to stumble or to stumble a brother.
4 Then he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live;
He knows by keeping the Word of the Lord that he will live
He knew and understood the importance of meeting together (Heb10:2)
25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
STOP EXPLAIN IN CONTEXT< HOW CAN THIS HELP US TODAY
Get the Word in, so the word stays in and the word will come out. So put into practice or risk losing it. - (be careful, explain this out)
The old fashioned Christian gathered together, just as we do today. He was willing to share Christ with others and did, may we be willing and doing the same things today. Their example is a great example for us. The doing, not the forsaking, and well, if we are honest and look around many have taken to that part too.
So, now our next marker of an old fashion Christian
He holds to traditional values
He holds to traditional values
Traditional values, do they still exist today? Good morals seem to be traded for personal satisfaction, but the old fashioned Christian it is more important to know the truth, stand in the truth, walk in the truth, share the truth vs. being popular . Now look at some more of the values he holds:

He did not try to make two wrongs into a right thing (Rom12:17-20)
He knew whatever he did, it was to give thanks to God (Col3:17); and to do it heartily (Col3:23)
He knew the value of working or the consequences of not working (Pro6:9-11)
He knew the value, the importance of keeping his word and did not demand a contract with small print (Ecc5:5)
He was willing to fight for what he believed
He hated sin (Pro8:13) and hated evil, helps preserve others too (Pm97:10), and kept pride and arrogance in check (Pro8:13) And, he checked his tongue too.
He loved, it became his nature (Rom12:9); He is blessed and walks in the Lords ways (Ps119:2-3)

19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
He knew whatever he did, it was to give thanks to God (Col3:17); and to do it heartily (Col3:23)
17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
Thanks in word and deeds and whatever he does does it heartily, meaning from the heart
23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
He knew the value of working or the consequences of not working (Pro6:9-11)
9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest”—
11 Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man.
He knew the value, the importance of keeping his word and did not demand a contract with small print (Ecc5:5)
5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
He was willing to fight for what he believed

Fight for freedom for his country
Fight for freedom for his faith
He hated sin (Pro8:13) and hated evil, helps preserve others too (Ps97:10), and kept pride and arrogance in check (Pro8:13) And, he checked his tongue too.
13 “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate.
Watches ways, watches mouth, helps to preserve others
10 Hate evil, you who love the Lord, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
He loved, it became his nature (Rom12:9); He is blessed and walks in the Lords ways (Ps119:2-3)
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
He knows he is blessed and and walks in those blessings
2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart. 3 They also do no unrighteousness; They walk in His ways.
So, what we have here is
One who observes the testimonies of the Lord
HE seeks the Lord and serves the Lord with his whole heart in all that he does.
He walks in the ways of the Lord and knows He is blessed!
all this leading to the next marker.
He raised his children properly
He raised his children properly
Our world, especially our Country has many ways they think are the right way to raise children, don’t they? The old fashioned Christian
Didn’t need a man named Spock, a woman named Clinton. It takes parents to raise a child not a village.
Was not caught up in pop psychology but was with theology (it is all about what God says, not man).
Phases did not phase him, he was consistent in his parenting.
Discipline was not anything to be afraid of what others thought, it was delved out and the child learned to understand it was not something threatened it was something that was done
He was concerned about the child, rather than someone like a court telling him what was right and wrong.
Now how about some scriptures to go with all that.

Instructions were given and expected to be adhered to (Pro2:1-2)
Wanted them treasured for they came from the heart (Pro3:1); and not abandon them (Pro4:1-2)
He taught the child to work and to respect authority (Eph6:1-2; Col3:20)

Discipline was to help and correct child and was not withheld (Pro13:24)
24 He who withholds his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
He demanded that the children do what is right by not only his words but by his example, it was not “do as I say not as I do” for he lived it out first.
He believed that when a parent said it the child obeyed it.
He had never heard anyone tell him “you can’t force the child” to do something that is right.
Instructions were given and expected to be adhered to (Pro2:1-2)
1 My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, 2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding;
Wanted them treasured for they came from the heart (Pro3:1); and not abandon them (Pro4:1-2)
1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments;
HE was giving them more than knowledge but giving them love and instruction to follow with their heart.
And finally he:
He taught the child to work and to respect authority (Eph6:1-2; Col3:20)
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
and
20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
IT was a commandment with promise and it was pleasing to the Lord! Parents had an awesome responsibility and children had a great opportunity!
There is one more point, one more marker of an old fashioned Christian to touch on, and our time is very limited so let me list it and touch briefly and I ask you to take your outline and look up and read the scriptures referenced
He believed earnestly
He believed earnestly
Mentioned earlier he did not need a contract, but you knew where he stood and his belief was apparent.
He believed sin separates men from God (Isa59:2)
He believes in the depravity and severity of sin( Rom3:10)
He believes that all sin (Rom3:23)
He believes in the wages of sin (Rom6:23) and without belief your sins are not forgive (Jn8:24)
He believes the truth (Rom5:8) and the truth made him free (Jn8:22)
He believes that Christ came, lived, died, rose again (1Cor15:1-4) so we could be set free (Gal5:1) when His blood is applied (Eph1:7) and your sins are forgiven in baptism (Act2:38).
