Son to Savior
Mark makes a shift from presenting the evidence as a good attorney of who Jesus is the serving Christ to the proof that He is the suffering Savior too.
He gives the facts like a journalist again.
As Jesus traveled near Caesarea Philippi He makes the first of three predictions regarding the rest of the journey (Mk8:31; Mk9:31 and Mk10:33-34)
We can look at the Mk8:31 in a minute but let’s look at the others briefly.
Now may we look our passage today.
What did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you?
Jesus must suffer many things
Jesus must be rejected, killed and rise again in three days
It is only after the most important answer ever that Jesus started to teach about rejection, suffering or the cross Only when we understand who He is can we appreciate what He did for us.
The message of suffering is both incredible and incomprehensible and to Peter and the Apostles was impossible.
Hey we can’t fault Peter and the other apostles, to protect Jesus, the Son of man, the Son of God would be natural.
But the rebuke (v.33) makes it clear that they had the wrong view, the wrong mindset.
This is all really about being mindful of the things of God (again v.33); when we try to consider the things of God may we consider these things today.
W
God’s ways are not our ways
When being mindful of the things of God there are things we cannot trust.
How can we be mindful of the things of God.
God’s ways are not our ways
Not our ways as He has stated (Isa55:8-9)
As illustrated (Mk8:31-33; Lk24:26-27; Lk24: 44-47)
Mk8:31-33 is our passage today so won’t read again, but let me bring in some others that illustrated that God’s ways are not our ways by illustration and explanation, Jesus not mine
By His greatness in contrast to ours (Mk10:42-45)
His greatness in contrast to ours (Mk10:42-45)
Mk10:45
What was greatness to Him: servitude and sacrifice!
By His view of beauty compared to ours (1Pt3:3-4)
It says the hidden person of the heart, the imperishable quality
Gentle, quiet spirit
Those things are precious in God’s sight.
or we can exchange the word beautiful
Finally, His view of money verses ours.
(Lk16:13-15)
LK16:15
Man concerns himself about material things; God concerns Himself about eternal things.
Man wants prosperity; God wants sanctity.
Man wants power and recognition; God wants purity and surrender.
it brings to mind this verse (its a freebie not on your outline
While I think it is clear His ways, His thought are not ours and they come from a greater place than ours, Peter and the apostles failed to appreciate this, so the question remains how can be mindful of the things of God?
Mindful of the things of God
We have obstacles to face when it comes to trying to be mindful of the things of God.
We cannot trust our ourselves
Our feelings (Pro14:12); even our heart (Pro28:26)
Many go by the notion, if it feels good, feels right than just do it.
But the Bible speaks regarding our feelings
Then there is the heart, we can’t trust the heart
So we don’t want to be a fool right?
We need to go by the Truth, by what His Word reveals.
Our conscience (Jer10:23; Act23:1; Act25:9-11)
O
Have you ever heard this
“Let your conscience be your guide?”
Better yet is what God says
Our conscience is not always reliable, is it?
Look at what Paul said.
Even when he was persecuting the church
Act23:1
Our wisdom (1Cor1:18-29; 1Cor2:9-12; Eph3:1-5)
Man thinks that they have intuitive knowledge, wisdom to know right and wrong
But look at what God says
1Cor
I know it is a long passage but it is well worth it!
-God has chosen to save man through a way that confounds the wisdom of man.
For us to know God to know God’s wisdom, God has to reveal Himself to us.
And He did!
Through the Apostles, His Spirit filled apostles in who they shared the wisdom of God with us through the inspired word; you can look up Eph3:1-5 if you would like to see more on this, why?
Because we still have more to come.
We must trust in God
In His instructions regarding salvation (Mk16:15-16; Act2:38; Act22:16)
Not by a system of good works; not by a predetermined number of people or certain people who cannot even deny the grace of God.
Not by one element, faith only, but by the whole counsel of God
Our salvation is found in the whole counsel given by Jesus, the apostles and the prophets in such places like
Mk16:15-16 where we are told told go make disciples and baptize them; confirming what Matthew recorded too in Mt28:20;
Or what Peter said, Luke recorded that salvation included repentance as well as baptism for forgiveness of sins and gift of Holy Spirit.
And what Ananias said to Paul
So I think we get the point, don’t we?
How to worship that is pleasing to Him (Mk7:6-9; Col3:16-17)
The scripture tells of profane (vain) worship in the O.T. and pleasing too, in the N.T. in the New Covenant there is pattern that is laid out too that is pleasing to God.
And if we are told something is pleasing, isn’t that what we want to do?
MK7:
For look what it says here:
How to live (Mt6:33; 1Tim6;17-19; 2Tim3:16-17; 2Pt1:3)
You have heard “look out for number one” right?
But as a Christian who is number 1 now?
Maybe you have seen a billboard or something that sames “families first” or maybe “my work is number 1”
As a Christian we need to trust the Lord, trust the Word and make Him number 1
how about what Paul said to Timothy
And we know what all scripture is and why given (2Tim3:16-17) and in by being given it we have all things for life and godliness (2Pt1:3) right?
We can only be mindful of the things of God when we
COme to know Him through the Truth of His Word
Submit to Him in obedience to His Word
Because the alternative is not good, the world and it’s ruler, Satan.
We don’t want to be an instrument of Satan like Peter was in the passage tonight.
so may we remember
and we must continue to be transformed
