To Keep His Commandments
To Keep His Commandments
The first logical thing in any belief system is to live by the teachings and principles of the faith.
The first logical thing in any belief system is to live by the teachings and principles of the faith. For instance, you cannot call yourself a Basketball player if you are not playing basketball. If you don’t practice what you preach no one will listen to you. The same thing goes in the faith, you cannot call yourself a _______ without heeding to the teachings presented by the _________.
For instance, who is going to listen to a fat fitness enthusiast? They know all the info but aren’t living it out.4
If you don’t practice what you preach no one will listen to you.
The same thing goes in the faith, you cannot call yourself a _______ without heeding to the teachings presented by the _________.
So first we need to learn the essential teachings of Christianity.
So first we need to learn the essential teachings of Christianity.
What are the essential teachings of Christianity?
We need to know how to answer this question in one sentence or less.
Original Commandments
Original Commandments
1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
No Other God
No Idols
Do Not Take The Lord’s Name In Vain
Keep the Sabbath
Honor You Dad & Mom
Don’t Kill
Don’t Commit Adultery
Don’t Steal
Don’t Lie To Your Neighbor
Don’t Covet Your Neighbors Spouse or Stuff
Don’t Cover Your Neighbors Spouse or Stuff
List’s are cool, and they are pretty easy to look at and know exactly what to do.
But Jesus simplifies this list to its most pure form in the NT
New Commandments
New Commandments
34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22:
What Jesus is saying is that the teachings of Christianity can be summed up like this. Love God, Love People
If you love God, you will have the right perspective.
Because as you love God, He will give you a heart for the things He loves.
Much like how when we spend time with our friends we become more like them.
So as we fall in love with God through knowing Him, like we talked about a few weeks ago, he will give you a supernatural love for people.
Now that we know essentially what Christianity teaches, we need to know what the driving force of the teachings are.
It is just theory without practice.
We are not philosophers we are Christ followers.
So let’s put some feet on it
To Fulfill Our Mission
To Fulfill Our Mission
Again, just like you cant call yourself a ________ without knowing and applying the teachings, you do not get to call yourself a Christian if you are not working towards accomplishing the mission that Jesus gave all Christians.
Again, you do not get to call yourself a Christian if you are not working towards accomplishing the mission that Jesus gave all Christians. That being said, we are all on different areas of life on this front, some of us are new believers and are learning the basic commandments of Christianity so our participation in the mission is limited (but there is still some participation), and others of us have been following Jesus for awhile and have the basic commandments under our belt (we are ready to daily working at fulfilling the great commission). Much like an endurance athlete, you cannot call yourself a marathon runner or triathlete without first working towards the mark.
Side note: we are all in different areas of life on this front
Some of us are new believers and are learning the basic commandments of Christianity so our participation in the mission is limited (but there is still some participation)
Others of us have been following Jesus for awhile and have the basic commandments under our belt (we are ready to daily working at fulfilling the great commission).
Much like an endurance athlete, you cannot call yourself a marathon runner without having first ran a marathon.
I know what your thinking… GET TO THE POINT
The Great Commission
The Great Commission
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Jesus tells us the point of His teachings are to get us out into the world to see the lost come to Christ.
He gives you the application to the information.
Based on the Word of God, we can conclude that the point of Christianity is simply this.
The Great Commission
The Great Commission
It is simply this
To fulfill the great commission by loving God and loving people.
Or another way of saying it, to love God and love people as a means to carrying out the great commission.
What are the commandments Christians are supposed to keep? Are they overbearing (a burden to keep)?
What is the mission of Jesus gave Christians?
What is the mission of Christianity?
What is the point of Christianity?
