Training Men: The Biblical Mandate
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
The work we have been given to do is not impossible. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. God would never command us to do something that is impossibleIt is impossible for one church to personally evangelize the entire worldAmazingly Jesus didn't attempt to evangelize the worldMoney isn’t the greatest need for world evangelismMature disciples will get the world evangelized Why are we failing to fulfill the Great Commission? We have lost our vision of reaching the entire world with the gospel messageWe see the size of the task and decide that it is too big to do so we must simply do what we can where we are We will simply bloom where we are plantedWe have fallen into the trap of doing ministry rather than training othersOften we are insecure that someone may steal the love and affection of our people so we do not train them nor allow them to develop their full potentialSince we can't reach the world we simply dedicate ourselves to trying to reach the area we live in We fall into the trap of just being faithfulWe have become more concerned about what we do not do than what we do III.How we got off trackWe set wrong goals for our ministryConversionsCrowdsChurch buildingsBuilding a great churchGetting our people to be holyThese wrong goals lead to wrong results Salvation decisions to boast aboutNumbers to showA beautiful empty building that keeps us busyA ministry that makes us look good but ties us down. We offend everyone and they leave our church. We develop parasitic people that depend on us to think for them and trust us to guide them.We have accepted some misconceptions in the preparation of leaders, our peopleNo one else can do it as well as I can!It takes longer to train them than it does to just do it!They will never do it as well as I can! There are no good church members or I can't find any and don't have any!The pastor becomes a crisis manager.Busily discipling people back onto their feet but is unable to take them further in the ministry leaving them frustrated and empty.People that get their lives back together but do not know what to do soon get bored and go back to the worldOr they will find a church that knows how to disciple them and make them useful in the work of God The pastor gets them into church and gives them some heartfelt platitudes. He can help the hurting but not lead the serving! The pastor doesn’t know what to do with people when they get over their problems and they soon get bored and walk away discouragedThe pastor knows how to love but not how to lead
Our biggest mistakesWorking on the exterior of a man rather than the interiorBE.DO.SERVE.TRAINWe have focused for too long on the do level and failedWe have focused on dress, hairstyles, music tastes, personal habits even in unsaved people trying to get them to look and act like Christians when God has not done a work in themWe have majored on minors and minored on majorsWe are more concerned with their do level and their serve level than their be levelThey clean up the outside but what we can't see hasn’t changedWe preach on personal separation and what they should not do more than on what they should be viii.We preach against sins that they commit without getting truth into their hearts that will cause them to changeA great lack of Biblical preachingWe get our messages from thoughts and ideas and go find a verse that fitsWe get a book, not of the Bible, and preach through itWe see a problem in the church that we want fixed and we preach on itWhatever gets in our craw this week gets preached onWhatever we hear at the pastor’s fellowship gets preached onWe spend lots of time defending the Bible but little time preaching what it saysA lack of transparency. If you are sinning you better keep it quiet because we will judge you. One day it explodes and whatever they were hiding comes out. We need loving accountability not judgmental criticismOur people need to know that we understand them and are here to help them For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. 3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. 4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. Pastoring or Training are the same! Most pastors are at best able to start one church and maintain it. They will either move from church to church or simply get to a certain number and maintain that. They will not start new churches. They will not send out missionaries from their church.Consider being a Church Planter. How many churches can you start and how long will it take to get one church ready to leave. The number of churches that one man can start is very limited in an entire lifetime. Finally consider the pastor who approaches the ministry with the mentality of training leaders.  He too will begin to plant a church but instead of getting bogged down in the day to day operation of pastoring a church he will search out and prayerfully train leaders.  What he can accomplish will be unlimited because the difficult part of planting churches is not the getting people together etc but leaving a trained leader that can carry the ministry forward. It only makes sense to train leaders.  And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.Consider the greatest missionary/pastor who ever lived.  He spent 3.5 years doing the work and yet when he left his ministry there were only 120 membersHe failed in the big church planting ministry if numbers are your goal but he certainly won out when you consider that he gave his time to the training of 11 men who would shake the entire world in their lifetime. What was his goal--to rapidly plant churches or to train men who could train others to plant churches.Pastors and churches need to train and prepare missionaries. There are approximately 14,000 independent Baptist churches in the USA.  If every church produced at least one missionary we could send 71 missionaries to every country.  That would be one missionary for every 464, 286 people. If each of those missionaries would start at least 9 churches we would have at least one church for every 50,000 people.
Pastoral Principles for training our people so that they will be fulfilled serving God and not frustratedDouble Vision -18Take them forward at a speed that they can go -14Love them like as though they were your very children. , , :4Amazingly our children would always make the best workers on the fieldWe work diligently and patiently with our own children.Teach them character from the very beginningRemember people are not disposableChallenge them and expect great thingsRemember you get what you look for, expect, and honorThey will never rise higher than what you expectIt is more caught than taught. They learn from watching us. , :17Get the right priorities in your ministry, Workers, People, Buildings VII.Practical steps to make this a reality You must see yourself as a coach not a player -12It is not your job or ministryYou will play all positionsTrain each person to do the workMotivate themAllow them to make the touchdownsUse your work to build your people and not your people to build your workYou are to give yourself to them sacrificiallyYou will very likely get hurt but that is your ministryAre we looking for people to help us build our ministry or are we here to build them so that they can serve God Let numbers be the result of your work not the goal of your workLearn how to treat your staff and church membersThere is an attitude among Pastors that seems to say that we are better than they are. We seem to think that the pastor can be trusted but the layman cannot be trusted. If he can’t be trusted it must be the training he got so it still the responsibility of the pastor. The world will never be reached without the training our people. God’s plan is to train and prepare leaders of all races to reach the world.Develop a mission’s strategy The process is your responsibility the product is God’s responsibility. It is more caught than taught. They learn from watching us. ,
