History

After the destruction of the temple of Solomon in 586, Zerubbable came back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. This temple was likely damaged or destroyed, and was essentially replaced by Herod the Great around 20/19 BC and completed about 10 years later. (Chilton, Bruce, Philip W. Comfort, and Michael O. Wise. “Temple, Jewish.” Dictionary of New Testament Background: A Compendium of Contemporary Biblical Scholarship. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 2000, p. 1168).
