Will We Know Each Other in Heaven?

I am often asked this question, Pastor will we know each other in heaven.

Yes, without a doubt I believe we will know each other in heaven!

Now don’t take my word for it, lets look at the Scriptures and see for ourselves. It is there I think you will join with me in seeing the points that tell us yes to this question

The two-word answer would be, “For sure!”

And the five-word answer would be, “You can count on it!”

Now we are going to jump around the Bible some to prove this to be true… so lets begin with the Old Testament and lets consider the great King, David.

Now think about David, his sin with Bathsheba and their son who died as a baby, an infant.

1. David and His son

2 Samuel 12:23 ESV

23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

2 Samuel 12:23/

David’s sin had cost him a great deal, He has committed adultery and murder, and when confronted David confessed his sin to God and the prophet Nathan. But we remember sin has consequences.

The Lord told him His son would die,

Listen to this passage in 2 Sam 12, verses 13-14

2 Samuel 12:13–14 ESV

13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”

David was heart broken as we all are when death comes our way…But...

David knew that he would see his son again in the presence of the Lord, and knowing that he would be reunited with the son he loved brought him comfort in his bereavement.

King David had a son who died in infancy. When the little boy died, David said, “I’ll go to him” ().

2. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

So what does the Bible say about these three...

Jesus said that many wold set at the table of God in heaven with these three..

Matthew 8:11 ESV

11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,

These three are the patriarchs of the Old Testament…

And what does Jesus say, they will be known..

So here is Abraham, and with him a son and grandson, and for Jacob, a father and grand father.. the whole point of the matter is that they are known to each other and to us...

Families are there, families that were righteous and for us, now Jesus.

Abraham was the father of Isaac and the grandfather of Jacob, and in heaven he enjoys the company of his son and his grandson, while Jacob enjoys the company of his father and his grandfather.

3. Jesus and the disciples

Now, think of Jesus, he told his disciples he would see them again at a special time in the new kingdom...

, listen to the Lord Jesus the night He is in the upper room with tis disciples, the night before His crucifixion.

Matthew 26:29 ESV

29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

These 11, and now even with Paul will eat and drink with Him in heaven, we will know them instantly I believe, as they will know us...

How wonderful to see and know those who suffered and gave much to walk with the Master.

4. Moses and Elijah

The eleven, who shared the Last Supper with Jesus on earth, will eat and drink with him in heaven. Peter, James, John, and the others will be named and known in heaven as clearly as they were named and known on earth.

Consider with me the transfiguration of Jesus… Matthew chapter 17 we have a very special event taking place, Jesus has gone up on the mountain side with 3 disciples,Peter, James and John…

And the glory of the Lord is revealed at the mount of Transfiguration and while there we are told that Moses and Elijah appear to him…

Matthew 17:3 ESV

3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.

This is fascinating because when Moses and Elijah appeared, they did not have the resurrection body. What is interesting here is that the resurrection has not taken place, yet they have visible bodies....

That should not be strange to us, John was allowed to see the souls under the altar in

This is fascinating because when Moses and Elijah appeared, they did not have the resurrection body. They were souls made visible as the angels were made visible to the shepherds, and as the souls under the altar were made visible to John (). Although they were still waiting to be clothed with the resurrection body, Moses and Elijah were known. They were recognizable, and they were able to engage in conversation. That tells us a lot about the conscious joy of fellowship that believers share immediately after death in the presence of the Lord.

Revelation 6:9 ESV

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne.

Now back to us, the resurrection has not come, they are still waiting to be clothed with immortality as we are, yet Moses and Elijah were known to the three that day...

They were souls made visible as the angels were made visible to the shepherds, and as the souls under the altar were made visible to John ().

They were recognizable, and they were able to engage in conversation. We will stand in his presence one day, and know them as we are known.

5. Paul and the Thessalonians

The writer to the Hebrews speaks of “the spirits of righteous people made perfect,” that is, the souls of believers in the presence of Jesus. These souls, he tells us, are gathered in “the assembly of the firstborn” (). Right now, in heaven, the spirits of the righteous made perfect are gathered. Gathered means community, and community means relationship.

5. Paul and the Thessalonians

Now conisder some of the things the apostle Paul says...

Paul makes it clear that the believers he loved on earth will be his joy in heaven.

1 Thessalonians 2:19 ESV

19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you?

When Paul says this, he clearly means and looks forward knowing that relationships forged on earth will continue in heaven.

How wonderful, also it could imply those you influenced here on earth willl be known to us...

6. The reunion of believing loved ones

Now think about those we love, those who have already crossed over into heaven.

As Paul writes and ministers to those who have lost loved one, it is not loss, So he comforts them… listen to Paul in , verse 17

1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV

17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

We are caught up together with them....

A wife who grieves the loss of her believing husband has the comfort of knowing that when the Lord comes, she will meet her husband again.

That’s more than enough to settle the issue for me, and I hope that it is for you as well. Christians who know and love each other on earth will know and love each other in heaven.

Can we take comfort in all of this, Yes, we are known and they know us…
