John 16:1 NASB95
“These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.
Jesus cares for His own.
He is about to prove this in the greatest possible way.
He is about to absorb the wrath of God on their behalf.
He is about to endure an eternity of the Father’s wrath for them.
Don’t ever underestimate the love of the Shepherd.
He loves them. He has chosen them. He will die for them. He will never leave them.
But even in the midst that truth, he also knows them. He knows the tendency of mankind.
He has seen the example of Israel, those who God brought out by a mighty hand out of Egypt and yet they refused to trust him and they died in their idolatry in the wilderness.
LISTEN to what Jesus is saying.
Listen to how he pleads for their souls. He pleads for Their allegiance. He pleads for their strength and steadfastness in the faith in the middle of the angst and difficulty they are about to face.
Essentially Jesus says and I’m paraphrasing “Im telling you this beforehand, so that you are not caught off guard and so that you will remain faithful!”
These men are about to go through it.
Do you think he would be spending time on this if their road was going to be an easy one?
No, he speaks this to them because, as the Lord of all Creation, in His omniscience, he knows they will face hardship. He knows how they will be treated. And he knows the temptation to just walk away.
So, he issues this warning, against apostasy, against just giving in and returning to the sin and idolatry that condemns to Hell.
Look in verse 1
John 16:1 NASB95
“These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.
As a loving Father warns His children, Jesus warned His disciples. “Be prepared.” he continues on..
John 16:2 NASB95
“They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.
Get ready for it. It is coming.
You will be outcasts from the synagogue.
The implication here is that the Jews will be the ones who will cast them out.
They will be cast out of the place where they used to worship.
This being cast out was not a small burden to bear.
They were treated harshly. Religious, Social, Economic impacts.
You didn’t worship. You didn’t show up with family to place of worship. Socially, it seems reasonable to imagine that they would have been treated as traitors by family, friends, and loved one. Economically, these were men whose jobs likely depended upon their knowledge of the people in their society.
They would be hated.
But not only will they be hated…
He goes on…

an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.

Hour language speaks of the time in which Jesus will bring about ushering in His spiritual kingdom.
At this hour, Those associated with Christ will now experience a hatred from the world like never before because they have submitted to the King whose righteous wrath will one day be poured out upon those of the world.
They will do this thinking they are performing a service unto God.
Basically what it says here is that they will do this all the while combing their own conscience.
Same thing that happened to Jesus.
This also suggests that the same people who put Jesus to death will come after them as well.
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to John 2. Opposition from the World (15:17–16:4a)

There is certainly evidence that some rabbinic authorities held that slaying heretics could be an act of divine worship

They will act on their own and attribute their actions to God. but listen to what Jesus says of them.
John 16:3 NASB95
“These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.
Hear the love in His voice for His own.
They are going to do this, but they don’t know me.
In fact, the reason they are going to do this, is because they don’t know God or Christ.
Jesus assures them through this that He knows whats going to happen
The strength for the disciples during the hard time will come from the fact that they do know God and Him personally.
This isnt that encouraging for us on earth, but with an eternal persecitve it make all the difference.
This doesn’t mean that they will escape the difficulty.
In fact, it guarantees their difficulty and for some, it guarantees their deaths.
But for his disciples, there is the promise of his abiding presence and to reassure them when it does occur.
Jesus telling them about it beforehand assures them that their suffering does not happen outside His knowledge or His sovereignty.
Every ounce of suffering they went through and we go through as believers is not
Look in verse 4
John 16:4 NASB95
“But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
John 16:4
The disciples are probably concerned at this point to say the least.
The level of expectation and sacrifice has increased.
The disciples at this point are probably struggling.
Suddenly, Jesus’s words “Follow Me.” mean something completely different for them.
Following Jesus for the past 3 years has meant a front row seat to some amazing miracles and ministry. Now following Jesus, means more than amazing miracles and ministry.
Remember what He has told them before.
Now, it means death. It means suffering.
It means a shift from Jesus being physically with them to being spiritually with them as they suffer.
It will even appear as those the world is winning.
Look what he says there at verse 4.
“So that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them.”
In other words, it will seem that they are winning, but remember what I told you. Suffer Well. Be faithful.
Now, it means death. It means suffering.
Jesus didn’t tell them of the suffering before, because in reality, he took the hit for them. They have watched him countless times be ridiculed and continue to minister.
Never do you read of a disciple getting persecuted while Jesus was with them.
They are about to watch Him suffer cruel punishment on the cross for a crime He did not commit.
But, Jesus will depart from them physically soon, but the suffering and persecution has only just begun.
The disciples will experience suffering like they never have before and it will all be because of the name of Christ.
Jesus won’t physically be there, but those who bear His name spiritually will be beaten, persecuted and killed.
And this is how it will be now.
Those who bear the name of Christ will always be the target of suffering. We shouldn’t be surprised when this happens and we will not be alone.
Look in verse 5-6
John 16:5–6 NASB95
“But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
John 16:5 NASB95
“But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
The disciples here it seems are in panic mode.
They are worried about themselves.
They have taken their eyes off of where Jesus headed and what that means for their future, and rather they are sorrowful because they have turned their attention to themselves an what they are about to face.
Sorrow has filled their heart. They are devastated, because Jesus leaving, but in this they have forgotten what Jesus leaving means for them.
What does it mean that Jesus is going to the Father?
It means that the Virgin Birth happened.
It means that he really did live a perfectly obedient life.
It means that his cross worked
It means that the resurrection secures our victory
It means that he will build his church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it
It means that he is seated on his throne at the right hand of God
It means that he will come back in glory
It means that He will send the Holy Spirit.
It means that He will be present for and with us through His Spirit.
It means that even though each and every one of these 11 disciples will die a martyrs death, they will open their eyes in death.
It means that even though our following Christ may lead us through the valley of the shadow of death, he promises restoration and victory!
But these disciples don’t see that.
They focus on their problems.
They are focused on their well being.
They are worried about their deaths.
They are focused on the what if rather than the even if.
They have forgotten what Jesus leaving means.
They are focused on the hard times while forgetting the God of time.
They are focused on the hardships of the world by forgetting the God of the World.
And how often do we do the same thing?
We forget the benefits and the blessings that we have in Christ because we are focused on the world.
This is a recipe for disaster.
There is only one way that we will be able to endure any hardship in this life.
We must
Hebrews 12:2–3 NASB95
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:1–3 NASB95
Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
focusing on the God of this World.
focusing on the God of this World.
My prayer that you gaze upon the supremacy of Christ above all your problems, all your cares, and may you never forget, as believers, as disciples of Christ, we are never alone.
We always have Christ, and by the way, the one who is with us always has all authority in heaven and on, and He has sent us His Spirit.
John 16:7 NASB95
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
It is to your advantage that I go away.
If Jesus goes away, he will send the Helper. The Comforter. The Advocate.
This Word can be translated in these three different ways. So which one is it? Yes.
He is our helper. Explain
Luke 12:11-12
Luke 12:11–12 NASB95
“When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
He is our comforter. Explain
Acts 9:31 NASB95
So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.
He is our Advocate. Explain.
Romans 8:16 NASB95
The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,
Romans 8:16–17 NASB95
The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
Romans 8:26–27 NASB95
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
He is coming and he is coming to accomplish some things in
Jesus promises them the Spirit here at the end of verse 7.
If I go, I will send Him to you.
John 16:8 NASB95
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
And that he does.
The Spirit of God is with us today. Be forewarned, there are a lot of bad teachings about the Spirit of God. Please understand.
He is not a feeling. He is a Person.
We do not have to wait for Him to show up. He is omnipresent.
He doesn’t come to lift a preacher or pastor up as a healer, He comes to glorify Christ.
He doesn’t come to confuse. He comes to bring light.
We don’t get more of Him as time goes on, We have him, all of Him, now if we are believers.
We don’t lose Him. He is the seal of our redemption.
We are baptized into Him at salvation, not by an experience later.
We cannot schedule his movement or duplicate his working through human invention, he is the sovereign wind that blows as He wishes. And fake will always be revealed.
Perhaps the biggest issue in Baptist life, the Spirit is not one to be afraid of. He is one to whom we rely on for any thing to work.
