Leviticus 1:1–5 CSB
1 Then the Lord summoned Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting: 2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you brings an offering to the Lord from the livestock, you may bring your offering from the herd or the flock. 3 “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to bring an unblemished male. He will bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting so that he may be accepted by the Lord. 4 He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering so it can be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. 5 He is to slaughter the bull before the Lord; Aaron’s sons the priests are to present the blood and splatter it on all sides of the altar that is at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

Why was a sacrifice needed?

Leviticus 1:2 CSB
2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you brings an offering to the Lord from the livestock, you may bring your offering from the herd or the flock.

The goal of sacrifice is restored fellowship with God.

Leviticus 1:2 CSB
2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you brings an offering to the Lord from the livestock, you may bring your offering from the herd or the flock.
Illus: THere is a very clear picture that God is wanting the people of Israel to see.
He wants them to understand that they are the ones who deserve to die.
He wants them to see the clear punishment they deserve because of their sin.
Us to. You cannot fully understand Jesus unless you begin in understanding your condition without him.
Without Christ we are all destined for eternal death, the wrath and punishment of God for our sins.
But Jesus, the lamb of God, steps in our place, becomes our sacrifice, AND gives us a restored felowship with God.
We are able to know God intimately because Jesus took the death we deserve.
Illus:
1 John 1:7–9 CSB
7 If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 Peter 2:24–25 CSB
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

The act of sacrifice is a confession of sinfulness.

Leviticus 1:2 CSB
2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you brings an offering to the Lord from the livestock, you may bring your offering from the herd or the flock.
Illus: Every week I get to attend celebrate recovery with many of my friends.
Whenever you get up to speak at CR, whether giving announcements, teaching, or praying you always have to start by owning up to your mess.
It is amazing how freeing life is when you are willing to own up to your sin.
As Christians we are not perfect people, though we often pretend to be.
We are sinners saved by grace.
How sad that the people who should gladly speak of our brokenness and forgiveness then feel they need to put on a false perfection to impress others.
Let us embrace not only confession to God, but to each other knowing that our righteousness is not our own, but of Jesus Christ.

Why did it need to be unblemished?

Leviticus 1:3 CSB
3 “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to bring an unblemished male. He will bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting so that he may be accepted by the Lord.

The sacrifice needed to be costly.

(from the herd)
Leviticus 1:3 CSB
3 “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to bring an unblemished male. He will bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting so that he may be accepted by the Lord.
Illus: do some math with me…
Is a sheep equal to a person? no.
From the beginning, sheep were never intended to be the final answer.
God asked for more than just a sheep you bought at the jerusalem Walmart.
He asked for you to take your perfect breeding sheep and give it to him. He wanted you to understand the costliness of it.
Why? because God’s intent from the beginning was for you to see that a greater sheep was necessary… Jesus Christ.
He was the costly sacrifice, the Son of God himself.
A sheep is never equal to God, not is God equal to man.
BUT— Christ the greater sheep is enough for all men.
1 Peter 1:18–19 CSB
18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.

It needed to be a perfect substitute.

Leviticus 1:3 CSB
3 “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to bring an unblemished male. He will bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting so that he may be accepted by the Lord.
Illus: Let me share with you a memory from our recent trip to israel.
When a shepherd parted from a perfect sheep there was always the fear that the sheep would get cut or sick before the sacrifice. That perfect sheep would no longer be acceptable.
To prevent injury the shepherd would wrap the sheep in swaddling cloths. These would be soft cloths so that no harm would come to the sheep before his execution.
So when the angel came to the shepherds out in the field at Jesus birth and told them that Jesus was wrapped in swaddling cloths, their mind immediately went to sacrifice. Just as the sheep was wrapped, so was the true savior.
Christ was the true sacrifice for you and me.
Romans 5:18–19 CSB
18 So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is justification leading to life for everyone. 19 For just as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

Why do you need to put your hands on the sacrifice?

Leviticus 1:4 CSB
4 He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering so it can be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

You must take hold of the sacrifice.

Illus: catch the gravity of the moment. God did not ask people to drop off the sheep with the priest as a payoff.
God said, as the sheep is sacrificed, place your hands on the sheep, a symbol of the transfer of your sin onto the sheep.
God wanted you to specifically connect the death of the sheep with the wages of your sin.
God still wants you to connect sacrifice to the cost. Faith is coming to God as a broken sinner, placing your hands on christ, and finding forgiveness in Him.
Romans 10:9–11 CSB
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame,
