He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
MIT: God the Son was revealed, resurrected, and glorified by the God the Father so that the children of God might believe and hope in Him.
I. Christ was Revealed for our Sake.
I. Christ was Revealed for our Sake.
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
a. Christ was known before time.
a. Christ was known before time.
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world.
He, the Christ, the precious, spotless, perfect Lamb of God whose blood was shed for our redemption is the eternal, Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity who has always been and will always be.
Our Savior the one who left his heavenly throne, was made flesh, fulfilled the whole law by His active obedience, and then bore the wrath of God as the propitiation of our sins was not a created being who God decided to create to save us. He is the eternal Son of God whom was intimately known by the Father before the world was spoken into existence.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jesus Christ was, is, and will be the God-man, truly God and truly man whom has always been in perfect union with the Father. He was not just foreknown by the Father, we was also loved before the foundation of the world.
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
He is one with the Father, and has always been. He was with the Father before the world was created.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
In the creation account we see God the Father directing the Son as He is speaking creation into existence. They were together accomplishing the work of creation together along with the Holy Spirit.
We know also that the Jesus Christ the Son of God was not just a silent partner in creation.
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Paul reminds the Colossians,
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Colossians 1:15-16
For us as believers in Christ it is important for us to understand who He is! His eternal nature. We are not just trusting our life and our eternity in a good man, a good teacher, or even a prophet. We are trusting our life and eternal destiny in the One Lord and Savior who has always been, that is why even in the midst of suffering and trials we trust in Christ.
We trust in Him because he was foreknown before the foundation of the world and because of what Paul wrote to the Ephesians,
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
Because Christ is foreknown, we have been foreknown and chosen before the foundation of the world.
Jesus Christ person was not all that was foreknown before the foundation of the world. His creative work was not the only thing foreknown about Him. God also foreknew the salvific work of Christ before the foundation of the world.
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Peter preached at Pentecost that the definite plan and foreknowledge of God was Christ being crucified by sinful men. God wasn’t scrambling to figure out what to do after Satan tempted Eve. He already knew what was going to happen, He already had a plan to redeem fallen humanity. God’s foreknowledge was not affected by the fall.
Here is another great truth about Christ, He was not only foreknown before the foundation of the world, Secondly we see,
b. Christ was made manifest in the last times.
b. Christ was made manifest in the last times.
but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you.
In other words, Christ was revealed, shown, and made known to us, by putting on flesh, being born of a Virgin, living, teaching, and even dying among us.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
Galatians 4:
Galatians 4:4-5
In the eternal, sovereign plan of God,
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
At just the right time, Christ was revealed, He would come so that He may live and die to fulfill the law, to atone for our sins, to redeem us from our eternal damnation.
He came so that the sacrifices might cease, the blood of bulls and goats were pointing us to the blood of the lamb that was slain. These sacrifices were temporary, they were showing God’s people they had a need for a greater sacrifice. One that could once for all atone for their sins.
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Hebrews 9:11
Why would God, perfect in wisdom, holiness, and power go through all of this. Why would he send His Son into the world, leaving His heavenly throne, privileges, and putting aside His power to come and be put to death at the proper time?
Here is the answer, Peter provides,
c. We were the reason Christ was revealed.
c. We were the reason Christ was revealed.
for the sake of you.
Talk about a personal salvation! Jesus was revealed, for you and me, for His church, His bride.
How is the eternal nature and revelation of Christ for you and I? How is it that the manifestation of God in flesh is for the sake of those whom he has chosen?
Paul writes to Timothy, because it is Jesus Christ,
who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
Spurgeon Commentary: 1 Peter Exposition
God is to be seen in nature, and seen vividly there, but not as He is to be seen in Christ Jesus. Instruction as to the eternal power of the Godhead some find in the skies above, in the fields around, and in the sea beneath, but in the cross there is more of God than in all the world besides.
Our salvation is a result of His eternal purpose and grace.
Our salvation is given us in the eternal person of Jesus Christ.
Our salvation has been “manifested” through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Our salvation is through Jesus who, abolished death, brought life, and immortality to light (so we could see it).
How through the gospel?
Who are what is your hope set on?
Are you preparing your mind for action?
Are you being sober minded?
Are you pursuing holiness?
Are you conducting yourself in fear?
Are you constantly thinking on the preciousness of the blood that was poured out for your sake?
These are the ways we ought to respond to the divine revelation and manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has eternally existed and has been supernaturally manifested for the sake of you and me. Will you and I now live for Him?
Is there any doubt Christ was revealed for our sake? Now here is the second point Peter gives us,
II. Christ was raised for our faith.
II. Christ was raised for our faith.
who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
1 Peter 1:2
It is through this Christ, this promised Savior, the promised Messiah, the Foreknown eternal Son of God that we are believers in the Father. There is no way, no not one that we come to the Father apart from the Son. We can not believe in God without believing in Christ!
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you want to know if you or anyone else believes in God the Father, ask them what they believe about God the Son.
Is He eternal?
Is He incarnate?
Is He fully God?
Is He fully man?
Is He the second person of the Trinity?
Is He perfect?
Is He the sinless, substitutionary sacrifice?
Is He the risen Savior?
Is He the ascended Savior?
Is He the reigning King?
Is He the returning warrior King?
Is He Lord? Have you submitted to His lordship?
Is this the Christ in whom you have believed, have you repented of your sin, then you are a believer in God. You have recieved this belief and faith as a gift from God, you didn’t muster it up, work it up, or come to it on your own. You have come to believe in the depravity of man, the holiness and love of God through the Son, by the Spirit of God regenerating your heart and mind so that you might believe in the Son for salvation!
through Him you are believers in God!
You are believers in Him first of all,
Because God raised Him from the dead.
If there was no resurrection what would we hope in? What would we look forward to? The resurrection is the the doctrine on which our hope hangs!
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
How important is the resurrection?
1 Corinthians 15:12-
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
Do you see why in the midst of suffering, the resurrection is the key to our faith and hope? If Christ had not been raised we would suffer through this life and then leave this life to an eternal death in the next, there would be no hope, nothing to look forward to.
But, because of the resurrection, our future glorification becomes a eschatological reality!
Notice also, that God did not only raise Jesus from the dead, He also gave him glory!
When God raised Jesus from the dead, he gave him honor, fame, splendor, renown, superlative brightness so that everyone would see the King has come, the Messiah has made a way for sinful man to be made right with God, the Sovereign Lord had accomplished the work of salvation.
One of the most powerful illustrations of God giving glory to the Christ our risen Savior (in my opinion) is in the ascension. Listen to Luke’s account.
And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Acts 1:9-
Jesus’ disciples stood in awe and amazement as their risen Lord was taken up by a cloud. Can you imagine the scene. Can you imagine the beauty, majesty, and glory of Christ on display?
There is no equal to the eternal, incarnate Son of God. There is no one who accomplished the work accomplished by Jesus Christ. It is because of who He is and what He has done for our sake so that our faith and hope are in God. Because our faith and hope is in God, we believe in His return. Which motivates us to,
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Philippians
that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Ephesians
Be ready for His return by preparing our minds for action, being sober minded.
Be holy as our Father in Heaven is holy.
Be fearful, because our Father judges each one according to His work and has poured out the precious blood of His Son for our redemption!
We don’t end with being fearful, because bottom line God’s foreknowledge of the person and work of Christ, resulting in Christ being revealed, manifested in the flesh, resurrected from the dead, and give glory was for our sake, so that our faith and hope are in God.
Even though we conduct ourselves in fear, even through the time of our exile we trust that Christ has died for us, Christ has suffered for our sake, His atonement for our sin is more than sufficient. Therefore we have a trembling trust as Pastor David has reminded us. We know we are sinful, we know God is Holy, but we know Jesus Christ has closed the gap for all who will believe in Him. Because of this we hope, we have a settled confidence since Christ was given glory, we one day will be glorified in Him!
