2 Samuel 7:12-
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
King David had a desire to build a house for God, but God had a different plan. God tells David that it will be his son Solomon who will build a house for Him, but He them tells of something else. That from David himself a king will come and one day sit on the throne of God’s kingdom forever.
Solomon did become king and build a house for God, but he died. So who is this mystery king?
The prophet Isaiah gives us some insight into who this might be.
Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The prophet Daniel also prophesied of this coming king.
Daniel 7
“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
One of Jesus’ favorite designations for Himself was “The Son of Man” and it comes from these verses in Daniel. Jesus was declaring to the Jewish people that He is the prophesied king that God had promised, the one from the line of David and the one who would sit on the throne of God’s kingdom forever.
Question: Is Jesus your king?
Challenge: Read John 12:12-38
Prayer: Father God, reveal your king to me.
