Exodus
God rescued Israel from Egypt, which represented the epitome of man’s selfish kingdoms where pain, suffering and death were its characteristics.
He freed them from bondage and slavery and set them up once again to be a kingdom of image bearers.
After God brought Israel out of Egypt they came to the base of Mount Sinai.
Here, God would reestablish the kingdom, with Him as king and the nation of Israel as His loyal subjects.
His plan was to set up Israel in their own land as an example to all the kingdoms around them what is looks like to have God as king and to be His loyal subjects.
There was a condition though, Israel was to be obedient to the covenant agreement God made with them.
They were to be loyal to Him and Him alone as God and king, and to not bow down and worship other gods.
How did Israel do?
They failed miserably.
Their demise was so rapid, that within a generation the nation of Israel was worshipping false gods and bowing down to them.
It didn’t take long for the people to verbally express what was already going on in their hearts and lives.
1 Samuel
In it says, All the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel and said, “you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways.
Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
But this displeased Samuel and so He prayed to the LORD.
And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they have said, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being their king.”
A second time God instituted His kingdom and a second time it was rejected.
A second time God instituted His kingdom and a second time it was rejected.
Question: Are you aware of your false gods?
Challenge: Identify them
Prayer: , Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
