John 13:34–35 NIV
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Guys I am so flippin pumped for this week... Gonna wipe the floor in floor hockey Saturday night, Worship God, Be together, and Go out into the community.
Before we do all this stuff together there has been something burning on my heart that has come half from experience, half from reading, half from conviction, and I half to tell you that’t too many halfs....
If you have ever been around Karl, or apart of the “Passion Tribe” or read our sign by the door you have heard the term family on mission. And this idea family on mission, but especially what it means to be a family as the body of Christ is getting me stoked for this weekend.
I have heard and read the same verses over and over and over about being the body of Christ…But I am beginning to experience it and see this thing in a beautiful new light.
Ephesians 4:25 NIV
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
OK we are gonna read three verses
Four verses
So two things. One we are a family. Two we are fighting for freedom.
First family...
In Jewish culture Family has one of the greatest claims on a persons loyalty. According this is how Jesus treats his family
Mark 3:31–35 NIV
Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
Luke 8:19–21 NIV
Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”
mk 3:
Luke
Jesus is not devaluing his biological family, he is increasing the value of what is going to become the early church. Jesus makes no distinction between the body of Christ and his biological family. Paul says...
This basic idea that We are family has been blowing my mind lately.
Romans 12:5 NIV
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
1 Corinthians 12:27 NIV
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
I know family sometimes holds this negative connotation, where the devil has taken something wonderful and perverted it in our minds. But Being in the Body of Christ is a good thing.
I think this a pretty basic concept for most people…like OK awesome Jacob whats new?
It wasn’t until a few months ago that this really hit me. We as Christians are an actual community. Nehemiah gives a beautiful picture of what authentic community looks like
Nehemiah 1:2–4 NIV
2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” 4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
Nehemiah 1:2–5 NIV
2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” 4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said: Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,
Nehimiah 1:2-5
Nehemiah deeply loves and cares for his family
Romans 12:5 NIV
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
Acts 2:42–47 NIV
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Not only are we a community, but Paul says we even belong to each other.
Romans 12:5 NIV
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
Acts 42:Not only are we a community, but Paul says we even belong to each other.
1 Corinthians 12:27 NIV
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
We have too push past the individualism that permeates our culture and see what God has called us to as a collective family
This week is going to be so good, it always is. There are gonna be some new people who join in throughout the week, let’s not wait to treat them life family
John 13:34–35 NIV
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
NIV“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
A few days ago Karl vocalized this idea of family that's been on my heart for months and I loved it.
It is so good when God uses a brother or a sister to speak the truth you couldn’t.
We had just met these two guys who loved the Lord…shout out to Ryan and Jeremy … and Karl comes up to me, and is like I don’t want to wait to be their friends, because they are already my family… and I am not gonna do the dumb warm up surface level crap... I am jumping right in.
I just sat there and smiled. We are already family because God himself gave us that identity. And in 1 corinthians 12:27
We don’t need restrict our hearts from one another
God’s family is so good.
My ridiculously incredible fiance has been in need of a car and Chris
This week is going to be so good, it always is
Paul is literally like “yo you guys belong to one anther.”
The second thing, is lets live in freedom.
lets read Ephesians 4:25 again
Ephesians 4:25 NIV
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
Falsehood is what makes relationships exhausting. Pretending to be something we are not is tiring and promotes disunity
We are called to put off all falsehood and to live in the light. later Paul says:
Ephesians 5:8–14 NIV
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them…
Every Monday Wednesday and Friday a growing number of us have been getting together for prayer at our house.
One Thursday night Baylee and I messed up. We pushed physical boundaries to far and we knew it. Friday morning roles around and my heart is on fire with conviction. We had been thinking pretty seriously about confessing that sin during prayer and were really wrestling through the tension of knowing these people are safe and family, but also just not wanting to do it.
And into our house role these two complete strangers who want to pray with us. And it was this like this horrible hard testing of like what does it mean to be family. We waited an agonizing 45 minutes then brought to light what had happened the night before. And through that there was a lot of crying and a lot of healing and a new confidence.
Putting off falsehood and illuminating the fruitless deeds of the darkness cultivates truth and makes darkness into light. Fruitlessness into fruitfulness
And realistically it would have been so much easier to just share that with an individual.
Guys I want so badly to operate as a family with you guys. For us to skip the warm up stage with the people we don’t know this week. Tomorrow we are going into the community praying for and loving on people. Let’s go as a family, not as a group of people trying to be one.
Worship
epheisa 5:8-14
I know family sometimes holds this negative connotation, where the devil has taken something wonderful and perverted it in our minds. But Being in the Body of Christ is a good thing.
We are family, not just because some of us go to Passion literally every year or because some of us are related. But because that is what God made us.
Romans 12:5 NIV
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
Ephesians 4:25 NIV
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
1 Corinthians 1:9–10 NIV
God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
John 13:34–35 NIV
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
1 Peter 2:22 NIV
“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”
Joshua 1:8 NIV
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
Romans 12:5 NIV
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
Psalm 119:9–11 NIV
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Ephesians 4:25 NIV
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
James 4:7 NIV
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Matthew 6:9–13 NIV
“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
1 John 1:3 NIV
We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
