So What

So What

Last year -Story of me driving for 4 months without stickers on the van. Even though they sent a reminder in the mail, I didn’t remember to go and get them. Some people were upset that Motor Reg. will no longer be sending out mail reminders and I can understand how helpful it could be If I would have taken the time to look at it. Renewing our stickers are important and if not there will be consequences to pay. There are may things in life that we need to renew (what are they?)
Licence, prescription, glasses, vows, insurance, debit cards, contracts…etc...
Most every thing in life requires renewal
We find ourselves here tonight on a senior soldier renewal Sunday it is a time for all of us to look at our faith and allow God to search out hearts, and a opportunity for us once again to intentionally reflect on our lives.

Whats What

John 21:1–17 NLT
1 Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. 3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. 4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. 6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. 7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8 The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. 9 When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. 10 “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. 15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. 16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. 17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. 18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” 20 Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” 22 Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.” 23 So the rumor spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that isn’t what Jesus said at all. He only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” 24 This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate. 25 Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.

Dejavu for Peter - it is all too familiar
Before we look at what is happening in this scripture I think we need to look back at Peters life and what brought him to this moment

Jesus preaching on the sea of Galilee - Jesus sits in an empty boat the bys were out washing the nets, then he said...
Luke 5:4–11 NLT
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
Luke 5:4–7 NLT

Peter left all he knew to follow Jesus, his livelihood, his family, the familiar, his security etc.. despite what people may have thought
He ate with Jesus, walked and talked with him, they hung out, he was friends with Jesus and loved Jesus. He experienced miracles and he had great intentions and yet he also failed Jesus
his falling asleep in the garden (
his attack on Malchus )
His denial of Jesus 3 times even after he told Jesus earlier on that he would fight for him, that he would die for him., John 13:37
John 18:15–18 NLT
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with Jesus. 16 Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in. 17 The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?” “No,” he said, “I am not.” 18 Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.

John 18:25–27 NLT
25 Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.” 26 But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?” 27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.

We know that the rest of the story - Jesus is arrested, and whipped and brutally nailed to a cross.
I often wonder did Peter see it, did he realize his part in the story
did he see his sin, his denial, his betrayal that held him there
When we come to we see that Peter has gone back to his old way of life, the only other life that he knew
Peter felt defeated, overwhelmed and maybe even guilty

When he asks do you love me more than these he is asking do yo love your career or are he willing to be Christ’s disciple, do you love me more than these familiar things you have returned to
Jesus asks peter 3 times do you love me - and while Peter was hurt by the repetition - I believe it was a reminder of the 3 times that Peter denied him and while it was painful for Peter it was a grace filled moment of sweet exchange
The NIV Application Commentary: John The Restoration of Peter (21:15–17)

Does he love his career or is he willing to be Christ’s disciple with a thoroughgoing call to ministry?

Jesus is asking Peter to examine the strength of his earlier pledges.

I often believe that there were great pauses in-between the asking of these questions
I feel that there was some time for Peter to look back and reflect

Does he love his career or is he willing to be Christ’s disciple with a thoroughgoing call to ministry?

Will he commit to live up to the name Jesus gave him (rock) will he live up to his commitment
After all Jesus did declare in
Matthew 16:18 NLT
18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
John 1:41–42 NLT
41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”). 42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).
Jesus communicates His confidence in and selection of him as the head of the early church. Luke demonstrates this in the book of Acts, which portrays Peter as a bold proclaimer of the gospel (; ; ), a miracle worker (; , ), an authoritative figure in the early church (; ; ; ), the first missionary to the Gentiles (), and a missionary to the Jews outside of Jerusalem (). Ultimately, Peter demonstrates his total devotion as a follower of Jesus when he dies a martyr’s death in Rome (1 Clement 5:4).

Now What

The Lexham Bible Dictionary Introduction to Peter

Introduction to Peter

Simon Peter is one of Jesus’ first disciples and later becomes the spokesman of the Twelve. Although Jesus gives Simon the name “Peter” (“rock”; Πέτρος, Petros; in Matt 16:18; Mark 3:16; Κηϕᾶς, Kēphas; in John 1:42), his ability to live up to it is often in doubt in the Gospels. Peter’s rebuke of the Lord (Matt 16:22–23; Mark 8:32–33), his falling asleep in the garden (Matt 26:40; Mark 14:37), his attack on Malchus (Mark 14:47; John 18:10–11), and his denial of Jesus (Matt 26:69–75; Mark 14:66–72; Luke 22:55–61; John 18:15–27) all support this perception. However, Jesus’ reinstatement of Peter in John 21:15–17 (“Do you love Me … feed My sheep”) communicates His confidence in and selection of him as the head of the early church. Luke demonstrates this in the book of Acts, which portrays Peter as a bold proclaimer of the gospel (Acts 2:14–41; 3:12–26; 4:8–21), a miracle worker (Acts 3:1–11; 9:32–35, 38–42), an authoritative figure in the early church (Acts 1:15–26; 5:3–10; 8:14–17; 15:7–11), the first missionary to the Gentiles (Acts 10:1–45), and a missionary to the Jews outside of Jerusalem (Acts 12:17). Ultimately, Peter demonstrates his total devotion as a follower of Jesus when he dies a martyr’s death in Rome (1 Clement 5:4).

I am so thankful for Peters life because our lives are not much different
I am so thankful for Peters life because our lives are not much different
Many are fearful to surrender to follow Jesus - what will ppl think
Many of us have left the comfort of what we knew to follow Jesus
Many here have made a commitment to be a disciple of Jesus
Looks different for each one of us. Some of us are disciples without being committed to a covenant like an adherent or soldier. I believe that following Jesus simply is the most important, and how we live that out will look different for each of us.
For some we have chosen soldiership and in addition to following Jesus we have made a sacred covenant to Jesus to live a certain lifestyle that requires hard work and accountability - is is not for everyone it is a calling, and it is okay not to be called to it, but I would encourage you all to listen for the voice of God and see where he calls you
For Soldiers , you sign on to be active as a disciple of Christ as GBP says we are not called to be in the reserves .
You have signed on the dotted line and have pledged to live a life that is pleasing to God
But like peter you may have committed in the beginning but have probably failed along the way. and here we are tonight with Jesus at the campfire we are given the opportunity to reflect on our lives and to be asked the question )______ do you love me? Then feed my sheep
I love this part of Peter’s journey because it is proof that no matter our past or even our present that Christ will give us another chance, he will change our lives if we surrender
When peter answered yes and meant it great things happened

If we
Luke 9:23 NLT
23 Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
was not satisfied to just sit as a follower but to fed sheep - active not in the reserves - GBP
When we take up our cross to follow him we join in his death and resurrection. We are given an opportunity for renewal even when we have failed to keep our commitments, we are given time to pursue holiness to be like Jesus.
Most things in life require renewal but the most important is our relationship with Jesus, it is eternal.
We enter in this life on our own free will, convinced that the love of Christ, who died and now lives to save me, requires from me this devotion of my life to His service for the salvation of the whole world;
Maybe you have never surrendered your life to Christ - this journey proves that you are loved by God no matter what and that if you surrender to him he will use you for great things
Maybe you are not a soldier and you are reflecting on your life and you know that you have not be sold out to Jesus, it is a reminder that he can forgive and bring life to the desert places
Maybe you are a soldier and have signed a covenant before God and you feel you have failed him, here is a time for renewal and confession before him
Mercy seat renewal cards are here - sing if crosses come

I will make the values of the Kingdom of God and not the values of the world the standard for my life.

I will maintain Christian ideals in all my relationships with others: my family and neighbours, my colleagues and fellow Salvationists, those to whom and for whom I am responsible, and the wider community.
I will uphold the sanctity of marriage and of family life.
I will be a faithful steward of my time and gifts, my money and possessions, my body, my mind and my spirit, knowing that I am accountable to God.
I will abstain from alcoholic drink. tobacco, the non-medical use of addictive drugs. gambling, pornography, the occult, and all else that could enslave the body or spirit.
I will be faithful to the purposes for which God raised up The Salvation Army, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, endeavouring to win others to Him, and in His name caring for the needy and the disadvantaged.
I will be actively involved, as l am able, in the life, work, worship and witness of the corps, giving as large a proportion of my income as possible to support its ministries and the worldwide work of the Army.
I will be true to the principles and practices of The Salvation Army, loyal to its leaders, and I will show the spirit of Salvationism whether in times of popularity or persecution.
I now call upon all present to witness that I enter into this covenant and sign these articles of war of my own free will, convinced that the love of Christ, who died and now lives to save me, requires from me this devotion of my life to His service for the salvation of the whole world; and therefore do here declare my full determination, by God’s help, to be a true soldier of The Salvation Army.SOLDIER'S COVENANT
