P-O-W-E-R OF GODS WORD
(ESV)
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
I. INTRODUCTION
Growing up I use to hear the phrase “sticks and stones may break my bones but, your words will never hurt me”. I soon came to realize how that was not true. In high school I was picked on for many things such as the kind of car my family drove, what clothes I wore, and most of all for a speech inpediment I had. They would call me stuttering Scott. So yes. Words do hurt. They can cut right to the heart.
You know God’s Word can be offensive and hurt at times too. Many preachers have watered down the gospel so they don’t offend anyone. They want to tickle ears and give people what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear. They don’t want me people to feel uncomfortable so they won’t mention anything about sin, hell, or judgment but they will talk about God’s love, grace, and forgiveness. Which is all good and we need to hear about that. But, we cannot treat Gods Word like a build-a-bear that we would get at the mall. We can’t cherry pick what parts of God’s Word we like and leave out the rest!
Gods Word has tremendous power to convert the sinner and build up Gods people by exposing our sin and pointing us to God’s grace at the cross! Gods Word isn’t about gaining information but, it’s about transformation and us becoming like Jesus.
II. PIERCING POWER
(NKJV)
Piercing to the division of soul and Spirit, Joints and Marrow.
This gives us a picture of a sword piercing the body. Finding its way between even the joints and the marrow of the bone.
Now in the human body the “Marrow” is the soft tissue that fills the core of the larger bones. So the marrow is protected as the bone acts like a shell to it.
(Show picture of Marrow)
The human body is a fascinating thing.
Now I seen a video of a pastor named Louie Gigalo. He went on to speak of how this star-breathing, universe creating God ALSO knitted our human bodies together with amazing detail and wonder.
He (Louie) was talking about how inconceivably BIG our God is...how He spoke the universe into being...how He breathes stars out of His mouth that are huge raging balls of fire...etc. etc.  Then He went on to speak of how this star-breathing, universe creating God ALSO knitted our human bodies together with amazing detail and wonder. At this point I am LOVING it (fascinating from a medical standpoint, you know.) .....and I was remembering how I was constantly amazed during medical school as I learned more and more about God's handiwork. I remember so many times thinking....'How can ANYONE deny that a Creator did all of this???'
Louie went on to talk about how we can trust that the God who created all this, also has the power to hold it all together when things seem to be falling apart...how our loving Creator is also our sustainer.
Now there is this molecule protein named “laminin”. 'Laminins are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding. It acts as a glue that holds our skin and vital organs in place. You see....laminins are what hold us together....LITERALLY. They are what holds one cell of our bodies to the next cell. Without them, we would literally fall apart. Now that amazing thing is what it looks like. Here is what the structure of laminin looks like...AND THIS IS NOT a 'Christian portrayal' of it....if you look up laminin in any scientific/medical piece of literature, this is what you will see...
But And I have thought about it a thousand times since (already).... Here is what the structure of laminin looks like...AND THIS IS NOT a 'Christian portrayal' of it....if you look up laminin in any scientific/medical piece of literature, this is what you will see...
(Show picture of Laminin)
The 'glue' that holds us together....ALL of us....is in the shape of the cross. Immediately comes to mind.'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth , visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things HOLD TOGETHER. ' Call me crazy. I just think that is very, very, very cool. Thousands of years before the world knew anything about laminin, Paul penned those words. And now we see that from a very LITERAL standpoint, we are held together...one cell to another....by the cross.
There is a piercing power to God’s Word. It pierces us to the point of a division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It pierces us the very core of who we are.
The prophet Jeremiah said this
(NKJV)
16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
TO BE HEALED OR CUT OFF
Christ is the head of the body and in Him we all have a part to play in His church. It’s like our human bodies need all the parts to function, all circulation of the fluids, all the blood flowing, so it can function how it was designed to so it can grow. It is the same with the church. If someone isn’t using their gifts to serve or even worse are acting out of order then it will stifle the body and even harm it. This can turn into a type of cancer when not dealt with can kill the body. There are only two options then. It receives the Word and is healed or it remains and needs to be removed. The Word of God can reach the worst sinner and the hardest heart. It can reach into the murderer, the rapist, the drug dealer, the alcoholic and smash the idols of the heart that has taken His place. He can melt it like wax
(NKJV)
29 “Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?
(NKJV)
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
III. OVERCOMING POWER
(NKJV)
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.
The Word gives us overcoming power. In , Jesus, the Son of God, the Word who became flesh, could have disarmed the temptations of Satan by any means within His power, but He chose to use the written Scripture by simply proclaiming, “It is written . . .” and “It has been said . . .” Jesus agreed with the power of the written and oral Word.
If the Son of God and the Word incarnate aligned Himself with God’s Word to overcome His adversary and choose the path of righteousness and life, how much more we should engage with God’s Word in the most reverent manner.
We aren’t mere victims in a sinful and fallen world but, we are overcomers by the blood of Christ! When Satan reminds us of our past we need to remind him of his future!
IIII. WARFARE WEAPON POWER
(NKJV)
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
Also, We have a warfare weapon power. God didn’t leave us alone to fight the principalities and powers of this dark age. He has given us weapons for our warfare which includes the word of God!
Embracing Eternity: Living Each Day with a Heart toward Heaven October 11: The Sword of the Spirit (Matthew 4:1–11; Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12)

When was the last time you felt the blade of God’s sword pierce your heart? Can you remember a time when the steel ripped your conscience to conviction, bringing you to your knees in repentance? Can you still feel the piercing sting of remorse? Did the blade make an indelible mark on your spirit? If so, then you understand the power of God’s Word. You know why the writer of Hebrews would describe it as a “double-edged sword.” You also understand why it would be the only weapon we need against Satan and the fury of hell that he brings to battle.

“Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” writes Paul (Ephesians 6:17). It is the only piece of armor on his list that isn’t meant for defense. The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of readiness, the shield of faith, and the helmet of salvation—all are meant to protect the heart, mind, and soul. All are intended to keep the soldier alive and fresh and ready for battle. All are critical pieces of armor in the fight against evil.

But the sword of the Spirit is different. It doesn’t protect; it maims. It isn’t passive; it’s active. It is intended for combat—a weapon for frontline spiritual warfare.

The Word of God stored within me is like the sword of the spirit ready to be pulled out as an offensive weapon against the enemy lurking in darkness to deceive and oppress.
V. ENDURING POWER
(NASB95)
4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
The Word also gives us an enduring power. When we feel discouraged, depressed, defeated and like we cant go on anymore the word of God will carry us through. Like an injured soldier in battle it will patch up our wounds and give us strength for victory over our enemy that we never ever dreamed or imagined because greater is he that is in me then he who is in the world!
There are many times that I just wanted to give up and quit. Especially on my road to ordination. I was going to college, in the ministry, working, and raising a family all at the same time. There were many sleepless nights yet somehow I had energy to do whatever I needed to do the next day. There were many tears shed yet somehow i found joy in my struggles because of the encouragement I found in the word of God.
There were times when I would work at wendys until 3 in the morning on Saturday day nights and i’d read the word and pray until it was time to go to church and id feel so alive!
VI. REVEALING POWER
(NKJV)
The Word of God…is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart ()
Lastly the Word of God has a revealing power. By the power of the Holy Spirt, It converts the sinner and brings them to repentance. It also shows the error of the ways of those who are believers. It goes on in v.13 to say that no creature is hidden for Gods sight. Everything is naked and exposed to Him to whom we will give account to. In other words “Be sure your sin will find you out”. King David said where shall I go to escape your presence? I think about this revealing power of the Word of God and how it is manifested in Jesus. He knew the “thoughts” and intentions of the Pharisees. They would try to trap Him with there questions but, in his disernment and wisdom He would answer back. God knows our hearts. He is our judge and knows our deepest darkest secrets. He knows the real you yet He still loves you!
VI. CONCLUSION
There is power in the Word of God. It is a piercing power, it is a overcoming power, it is a warfare weapon power, it is an enduring power and its a revealing power!
VII. APPLICATION
Are you plugged into the power source of God’s Word that gives you life. God said that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God!
Can you imagine what the body of Christ would look like if it made the word of God a priority? What if we clung to Jesus and would not relent? What if we fell in love with the author of our salvation all over again?
