Today I am beginning a new series of messages

GETTING THE ORDER RIGHT
One day a pastor was speaking about all the things money can’t buy.
“Money can’t buy happiness, it can’t buy laughter and money can’t buy love” he told the congregation.
To make his point he asked them, “What would you do if I offered you 1,000 euros not to love your mother and father?”
Everyone became very quiet.
Finally someone spoke, and asked an important question, “How much would you give me not to love my big sister?”
Well....I hope no one here feels that way about anyone in your family
What would it take for you to sell your love for God?
But we have to be honest about who and what we love the most in life
Today we begin a new series called “All My Being”
It is about how much we love God and all the choices we make to put him first in our lives
There will always be other offers
There will always be competition for the affection of your heart
As Christians, we must love God with every part of our being
It is the greatest command
We read it in Mark 12
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
30 Y amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. Este es el principal mandamiento.

When know it is God’s command, but if we are going to obey it, then first we have to understand it
That is our purpose here today
With God’s help, today we are going to take steps of radical faith and obedience

Why do you think he is so upset

Suppose you go into a restaurant and the server brings you something completely different than what you ordered

They say, I know what you ordered, but I changed it

I brought you the food that I wanted you to eat

I just made a substitution

Imagine you are shopping in a store, and you choose everything you want to buy

However, when you take your items to the cash register, they charge different prices than what is on the price tags
You take everything to the cash register, and you pay for it
However, when they give you your purchases, they only give part of what you bought
They say, I know you paid for all of these things, but I am only going to give you some of them
Not many of us would be happy with that
God is not happy with that either
They say, I know the price that is marked on the item, but I changed it
His expectation is really clear

We are commanded to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and stength
It is not okay to make a substitution
How we can say to God, I know you have asked me to love you with all of my being, but I have decided to give you something else
I am changing the command
It not okay to only partially obey God
How can we say to God, I will love with you my mind, but not my heart...
Some people would say, “The heart wants what the heart wants”…so we just have to let that happen…No
How can we say to God, I will love you with some of my heart, part of my mind, half of my strength?
UNDIVIDED HEARTS
UNDIVIDED HEARTS
In our relationship our hearts have to be undivided
No half-hearts and no double-minds
In the passage we read in Mark, God commands that we love Him with both our heart and our mind
If you study the original language you will learn that the “mind” goes beyond just rational, scientific-style explanation but emphasizes meditation and reflection.
It includes inquiry but has a deeper understanding beyond just finding the right answer.
- “Heart” is the desires or affections in our innermost being.

- The Old Testament doesn’t separate thinking from feeling (fn)

- There was no concept of loving God with only a part of yourself

Where does that happen in my life?
When I am at church, I am singing the songs
I am listening to the sermon and taking notes
I am praying and declaring my love for God
When I am at church, I am giving God my best
So, where does my heart get divided?
Today I want to tell you two ways this shows up in our lives
1. Substitutions

It happens when we make substitutions
EXAMPLE: MONOPOLY MONEY
What would happen if you took some monopoly money to the store?
Would you be able to buy anything with it?
Of course, it would be a joke
It is a substitution
It is not the real thing
It is never going to work
The same is true in our relationship with God
We cannot live for God on our terms, we have to live for God according to His will
EXAMPLE: DEAL OR NO DEAL
We become like contestants on the gameshow Deal or No Deal
The banker makes an offer, but the offer gets rejected - “No Deal”
The contestant is saying you have make me a better offer
They say “no deal”
This is our hearts want to make a substitution
I reject the plan of God and substitute my own reality
We want God to make a better offer
We see an example of this in the religious leaders who lived in the days of Jesus Christ
Let’s read Matthew 15:8-9
8 “ ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”
8 Este pueblo de labios me honra; Mas su corazón está lejos de mí. 9 Pues en vano me honran, Enseñando como doctrinas, mandamientos de hombres.
This is exactly what the prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 29:13
They replaced God’s word with “the commandments of men”
The real issue was a heart issue
He said, “their heart is far from me”
If we want our hearts to be close to God....to love God with all our hearts, then we must bring to God that for which He has asked…without substitutions

It is no real if we are just going through the motions of being a Christian
True worship is when He has all of my heart
Moses was a man who gave God his whole heart

Moses was a man who understood what it means to choose God with all of your heart
We cannot offer to God less than he asks from us
Moses was raised as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter
He was part of the royal family
He was living a very good life
2. Partial Obedience
King Saul was offering sacrifices
Until one day he had an encounter with God at a burning bush
He could have accepted that life and possibly helped the Israelites from
But he knew that God had a plan for his life
He did not have to do anything
But his faith in God would not allow him to compromise
We read this in 1 Samuel
He knew that it would be a sin to offer God anything less than what He he asked
He knew that was not the life he was supposed to be living
24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
It was a very spiritual thing to do. Bring your sacrifices to God.

He knew that it would be a sin to offer God anything less than what He he asked

22 And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.”

Samuel tells him that what God really wanted was his obedience
He wants your heart to be fully devoted to Him

Samuel told him that your rebellion was like a false worship
It was like idolotry
Our best and truest worship is to give God what He asked from us
He wants your heart
No conditions. No restrictions. No substitutions.

So one way our hearts get divided is when we make substitutions to what God asks from us
It also happens when we hold back part of our lives from God
Partial obedience is still disobedience
We feel justified because we gave God something He asked for…just not everything He asked for
We cannot offer to God less than he asks from us

That is not true worship
True worship demands all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength
Let me give you some examples from the Bible

We see this in the life of King Saul

Saul’s heart got tested two times
The first test we read about in
Samuel (representing God’s voice) tells Saul to go to Gilgal and prepare to fight against the Philistines
Saul is instructed to wait 7 days for Samuel to arrive
When Samuel arrives, he is supposed to give an offering (seeking the Lord’s favor in battle) and give instruction to Saul
So here is the real leadership test. It is not the fight against the enemy (Philistines), the real fight is against himself. Will Saul obey they voice of the Lord
This was the real test was not the battle against the Philistines
It is not the fight against the enemy (Philistines)
The real fight is against himself.
Will Saul obey they voice of the Lord?
The answer is no he did not
1 Samuel 13:8-1
He made a decision to offer the sacrifices without Samuel
He could not wait

10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. 11 Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, 12 I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” 13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

Not long after that, Saul faced another test of his heart
8 He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. 9 So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering. 10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. 11 Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash,

King Saul was offering sacrifices
Samuel gave instructions for Saul to destroy the Amalekites
Again Saul only obeyed the part of the instruction that he wanted to obey
When Samuel arrived Saul claimed that he obeyed God’s command

13 And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed be you to the Lord. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” 14 And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?”
13 Vino, pues, Samuel a Saúl, y Saúl le dijo: Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová. 14 Samuel entonces dijo: ¿Pues qué balido de ovejas y bramido de vacas es este que yo oigo con mis oídos?
Saul said that he saved the best animals to sacrifice to the Lord
God wanted something more than his sacrifice

He was saying, you can stay here plowing the fields, or you can come with me and learn what it means to be a prophet
Elisha made a choice
21 And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.
21 Y se volvió, y tomó un par de bueyes y los mató, y con el arado de los bueyes coció la carne, y la dio al pueblo para que comiesen. Después se levantó y fue tras Elías, y le servía.

He burned his plow (quemó el arado y coció la carne de los bueyes)
Elishah was not just burning his plow
He was a farmer
He was letting go of everything so he could answer God’s call
The call came through the prophet Elijah, but he knew that it was God’s call for his life
He was going to follow God with all of His heart
He was not sacrificing his possessions
He was literally putting his life on the altar
Here is the message
Nothing stays in my heart that could tempt me to walk away from God

It is time to give to God exactly what He has asked from us
To love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength
No substitions
No half-hearts or double-minds
It is time to run to the altar and cry out in worship
Declare that God has all of you
