Redemptive Grace

Samson’s mom taught us to see God’s potential in others
Samson’s lust taught us not to follow our sinful desires because they leave us empty
Samson’s anger taught us that we can use the gifts that God has given us in an un-godly way and miss out on the blessings of God
Today I would like to finish up our look at Samson
AND finish drawing a picture of what I believe that God wants to show us in 2019… Redemptive Grace.
Samson was given a purpose from before the time that He was born
To complete His purpose He was given supernatural strength from God
He was told in order to keep the gift that God had given him that He needed to be obedient to the Nazarite Vow
while it was more in depth than this a few specifics were mentioned
not to touch anything that was deceased
not to eat or drink anything from the vine
not to cut the hair on his head
in Samson kills a lion with his bare hands
Judges 14:8–9 ESV
After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion.
Judges 14:8
Here he touched something dead -
he also took spoil from 30 people that he slaughtered
used a jawbone of a dead donkey to slaughter 1000 men
Judges 14:12 ESV
And Samson said to them, “Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes,
Judges
this was traditionally a 7 day drunken party
I have no proof that he actually ate or drank anything from the vine
BUT looking at his track record I am going to say that I believe that he did
So of the 3 things told specifically in Scripture
touched deceased
probably drank from vine
but still has long hair
While Samson was in teh
Judges 16:4 ESV
After this he loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
Judges
Judges 16:5 ESV
And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”
so he tests her
says if he is tied with new bow strings that have not been dried
he will lose his strength
they tried it and he breaks them
Delilah is upset that he lied
never mind that she tried to have him killed
so he says okay it wasn’t bowstrings but new rope
but when time came he broke them as well
She is angry again
if you weave the 7 braids of his hair into the fabric loom and tighten it then he said that he would become weak
she tried it in his sleep and he woke up and fixed his hair
Judges 16:18-
Judges 16:18–20 ESV
When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up again, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands. She made him sleep on her knees. And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
so the enemy gouged his eyes out
bound him in chains
forced him to grind grain in the prison
Samson blew it
God had been good to him and blessed him but he had disobeyed God and lost his blessing
Who else has come to the place where you have messed up what God made good for you?
Judges 16:23–30 NLT
The Philistine rulers held a great festival, offering sacrifices and praising their god, Dagon. They said, “Our god has given us victory over our enemy Samson!” When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying, “Our god has delivered our enemy to us! The one who killed so many of us is now in our power!” Half drunk by now, the people demanded, “Bring out Samson so he can amuse us!” So he was brought from the prison to amuse them, and they had him stand between the pillars supporting the roof. Samson said to the young servant who was leading him by the hand, “Place my hands against the pillars that hold up the temple. I want to rest against them.” Now the temple was completely filled with people. All the Philistine rulers were there, and there were about 3,000 men and women on the roof who were watching as Samson amused them. Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me again. O God, please strengthen me just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.” Then Samson put his hands on the two center pillars that held up the temple. Pushing against them with both hands, he prayed, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And the temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people. So he killed more people when he died than he had during his entire lifetime.
Judges 16:23-30
after all of that God restored Samson
why?
He called upon God humbly
he was desiring to continue serving his purpose that God had set him out to do
he was willing to sacrifice for the purpose of God
Judges 16:5 ESV
And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”
Psalm 85:1–7 NLT
Lord, you poured out blessings on your land! You restored the fortunes of Israel. You forgave the guilt of your people— yes, you covered all their sins. Interlude You held back your fury. You kept back your blazing anger. Now restore us again, O God of our salvation. Put aside your anger against us once more. Will you be angry with us always? Will you prolong your wrath to all generations? Won’t you revive us again, so your people can rejoice in you? Show us your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.
Psalm 85:1 ESV
Lord, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
Here the Psalmist wants an opportunity to make a fresh start in life
He knows that God is not wishy-washy
He hates sin
righteous anger
He knows that God’s righteousness is not contrary to God’s unfailing love
God can forgive you
God’s desire is to not only forgive you but to restore you thru His unfailing love
God will help to bring radical change in your life
He loves you and wants the best for your life
sin is a liar and will tell you that life is good but will mess you up
So He asks us to repent thru His love and kindness
repentance is not just about turning away from sin, but turning towards God
2 Corinthians 5:17–19 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
2 Cor 5:17-
(SONG)
God doesn’t just want to forgive you
He wants to restore you
THAT IS REDEMPTIVE GRACE
we didn’t earn a second chance but by the grace of God we have been offered one
the second chance is that we will become NEW
SO THAT IS WHAT WE LIVE FOR IN OUR OWN LIVES
AND THAT IS WHAT WE PREACH THROUGH THE MESSAGE OF CHRIST
