Our theme verse for the year is
Peter writes to the church about the things that they have as believers in Christ.
Things that are spiritual that effect a life that is physical
And he says to the brethren (or the believers) look forward to these things.
Or expect these in your life.
and be excited about them
and he finishes by saying and wait and see what they will do in your life.
Or in his words, they will enable you to be in peace and pure before your God.
How does that happen?
Well ultimately we are going to get to living expectantly of Christ’s return.
So as that takes place in your life, you prepare for that to happen.
But as it relates to where we are in the series right now, when we focus on these spiritual traits of life, we begin to live in each and everyone of them exercising them in our daily lives.
So what do we live expectantly in?
Live Expectantly In...
Our Glorious Inheritance:
Our living hope of that inheritance
It is sure
It is eternal
and it is enduring
Our genuine faith brought about by the one who leaves us the inheritance
A real faith, founded on the real God, which is proven by the fires of a real life.
Our Awesome Salvation
The process of life that ties hope and faith together.
The process of renewal and restoration that changes everything about life and the hereafter.
The reason why Peter writes and says, look forward to these things.
We live expectantly in His amazing Grace
Grace that sobers us up toward life.
It matures us spiritually
It causes us to see ourselves in a different light
It wakes us up from the illusions of life and keeps our spiritual eyes wide open
Grace that makes us Holy
no longer chasing after the lusts of this world
no longer unclean because of the sin that we used to be involved in
allowing the Holy Spirt of God to live through us and affect our lives and make us children of God
Grace that makes us children of heaven.
Living under a father who shows no partiality
Experience his everlasting and powerful love every day and in every situation
and Recognizing that we can trust him because of the great price that he paid for us.
Now if we were doing a television commercial, I would say but that’s not all.
Act right now and we’ll send you another spiritual gift totally free and all you have to do is pay the postage.
Well the first thing we all know is that God’s gifts are free - Jesus paid for it all and the postage on the Old Rugged Cross.
But there is more.
Look at
1 Peter 1:
We have been given a Powerful Word
A Word with a Name.
John 1:
In other Words, Jesus is the personification of the Wisdom of Heaven.
He is the personal deliverer of the Word of God into the Flesh.
Now because of Him and the Holy Spirit, we don’t just read the Word, but the Word is in us
The Word reads us.
It’s a Word that has a mission
The Word sets us free
The Word reveals God to us
He reveals God’s word to us - I only say what I heard the father say
He reveals God’s love to us - I only do what I’ve seen the father do.
We need to live in expectation of what this truth is doing in our lives.
Yes, it sets us free.
But that freedom brings so much more into our lives.
The Truth Purifies Your Soul
In other words, the truth set you free by dealing with your sin.
We all had a sin problem didn’t we?
The sin problem had no remedy except death.
And Jesus came to this earth to die for us.
The Word was put into action.
So live in a way that is excited about being free.
Now as I was preparing this message, I came to this part and froze.
I went to prayer and meditation about the sermon and asked God about it.
Our dialogue was short at least from my point.
“God I don’t get it.
I feel like this is just restating a point over.
We all know this.
And everyone I’m speaking to would say to me, but I’ve accepted Jesus and his salvation.
But the answer back from Him came as I lay my head upon my pillow one night this week.
- Then why aren’t they living in that freedom.
Listen to me church family.
Brothers and sisters.
I have sat with Christians of all ages who are dealing with stuff.
I deal with stuff.
I’ve sat with men in pornography - they want to be free
I’ve meet with Christians with addictions - nicotine, alcohol, eating, spending
I hear Gods children gossip about another church or people in their own church.
We have lunches and prayer meetings or just time together to find out what is going on in every one else’ life.
And you know what I hear - I’m trying to give it up.
I feel better and I’m doing a little better, but it’s still there.
And as I prepared this message I head the Holy Spirit of God saying - But they are already free.
Tell them that, because I don’t know if they really understand that.
So brothers and sisters, I’m telling you today.
Those of us who are struggling to be free, The truth of the Word has already purified our souls
Our souls are that earthly fleshly part of us.
Our thinking and our behavior out of those thoughts.
And I know I’m going to step on toes today, but I think I’ll do it as nicely as can be done and still make a point for what God’s Spirit is compelling me to bring out this morning.
In the list that I’ve presented, we all would say pornography is sin - and it is.
But what about Nicotine, what about over spending, over eating what about a little alcohol (after all Paul says a little fermentation does the body good)
I’m not drawing those lines for you today.
Because I believe it’s clear in the Word of Truth.
The first thing we see is that sin brings death.
Pornography kills relationships especially the marital relationship
Nicotine will kill at somepoint.
How much, and over how long is dependent, it seems, upon the individual and diet and exercise and just earthly life
