Intro

Maybe you thought about the movie Training Day 2001. It was the only movie Denzel ever won an Oscar for. He played the part of a men, brazen, crooked two-timing cop that ran a band of other thug police.
He masked his crime scheme behind the gritty life of the under world of drugs.

Officer Jake played by Ethan Hawke is the newbie on the scene.

Young, naive Jake learns a lot in his 1st 2 days. He learns the hood. The gets the scoop on the beefs between rival gangs. He sees illegal money being made and distributed amongst the other cops. He’s even introduced to drugs so that he won’t be able to expose the others as his system too has drugs in it. And much more.

[Transition] In our text Benaiah has been appointed as the head of David’s mighty men. He the head of a band of warriors. His job is to not keep it pretty for
1 Chronicles 11:22 NKJV
22 Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds. He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab. He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.
son of somebody…that’s from somewhere…did a buncha stuff…including killing 2 folk…it snowed and there was a lion.
Goal: By the time you leave today, you’ll have a different perspective on your past and your problem.
Really, not that convoluted. Introduced to Benaiah:
Introduced to His
Family: His daddy is Jehoiada. According to Scripture he was a priest used at a critical time to protect the throne His grandad was Kabzeel Application: Some of you are called to fight with your hands, others on your knees.
Feats: he’d done many feats, killed 2 men,
1 Chronicles 11:23 NKJV
23 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great height, five cubits tall. In the Egyptian’s hand there was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, wrested the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.
1 chron 11:23
This is no ordinary man. He’s got PEDIGREE and PRIZES
A few things jump out at me:

Conditions: “on a snowy day.”

“In the midst of a pit on a snowy day”
this threw me. I’ve been to Middle East and it’s hot. Even in the cool season it’s still hot. Q: Where did the snow come from? A: At higher altitudes in Lebanon Mountains it’s produced in abundance
this threw me. I’ve been to Middle East and it’s hot. Even in the cool season it’s still hot. Q: Where did the snow come from? A: At higher altitudes in Lebanon Mountains it’s produced in abundance
Q: What would make this man think he could take on a lion, in a cold, cave

Look where Comes from: “He had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab.”

“Lion Like Men”
“Lion Like Men”
The writer is employing a literary device. He’s trying to show that they weren’t average men.

What he Chooses to Confront: “He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.”

He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.
This wasn’t a random Confrontation. Walking along high atop the Lebanon mountain and up pops a lion. “he also had gone down.” He CHOOSES to confront the lion.
When God is training you from something, He has a way of building on what you’ve already got, gassing you on with what He allowed you to accomplish and

His Training was Confidential

“he also had gone down”

The Conditions

vs. 22 He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.

His Training was Confidential

“In the midst of a pit” - I need to recalibrate your mental image…not a hole, trough, or rut, but rather a cistern, daniel in the Lions den, dungeon…it was big enough to hold a man and a lion with room for the lion to lose! It was a cave
Nobody else was there!
His training day happened inconspicuously but the outcome ended up CLEARLY!
this threw me. I’ve been to Middle East and it’s hot. Even in the cool season it’s still hot. Q: Where did the snow come from? A: At higher altitudes in Lebanon Mountains it’s produced in abundance

God has tendencies to get you together where it has chances to be messy.

Moses - backside of the mountain
Paul - road to damascus
Nicodemus - at night
David - in the wilderness
Night school vs. Nobody else IN school!
Joseph - in jail
Jacob - middle of the night w just an angel
even Jesus - praying and drops of blood because of intensity

But the results become CLEAR

Announcement: You can’t talk about some of the fights you’re going through. You can’t snap chat them, you can’t IG or FB, but don’t worry about it. People can’t handle what they’d see if they had a streaming camera in the cave with you. But soon and very soon, what happened in the cave will come to crowds. Ie, what’s been done in the dark, will have light shone on it.
Can’t you see Benaiah, coming down from the snowy climate, back to the hot desert sands.
But wait a minute! You missed something, nobody else was there.
You’re going to be able to report the story from your vantage point. the only thing that matters is the outcome “I’m still standing.” “I’m better I’m stronger, wiser, so much better.” “God blocked it.”

Characteristics

“Lion Like Men”
The writer is employing a literary device. He’s trying to show that they weren’t average men.

Characteristics

Strong: Lions also go toe-to-toe with animals much larger than themselves. Lions can kill animals that weigh up to 1,000 lbs., according to the Smithsonian National Zoo. To kill their prey, lions use their powerful jaws to snap the prey's neck or to strangle it to death
Size (350-400 lbs)
Swift - on Masai Mara reserve my warrior showed me his scar. “They will kill one man alone.”
Serious: Nobody messes with the lion!
The NFL Combines: Athletes looking to head to the draft show up.
One event is the bench press 25-35 is the range 225 lbs. They don’t just show up and guess. They train for the moment. They don’t merely train to lift 225, they lift more.
Even though the 225 pound bench press test is an endurance strength test, I recommend that an athlete must also become an overall stronger bencher to improve his performance in the drill. For example, there should be days where the focus is soley on improving the athlete's one repetition max. For example, do five sets of three to four reps where the weight is heavy enough that you could only perform three or four reps before failure. Stronger athletes will be able to perform more reps at 225 pounds because the weight is a lower percentage of their one rep max than a weaker athlete. - Brett Fishcher - licensed physcial therapits and atletic traniner - NFL.com
Don’t think giants like Goliath. the text doesn’t support
App: You’ve been training for awhile to kick your problems butt!!! If you handled 2 men that had Size, were Swift, Something Serious then this ONE real lion would be SIMPLE!!!!
App: But, if I handled 2 men that had Size, were Swift, Something Serious then this ONE real lion would be SIMPLE!!!!
Benaiah’s possible thought process: I’ve taken out 2 that were human but characteristics of a lion.

What’s the moral of the story…what does Benaiah teach us?
1 Chronicles 11:24–25 NKJV
24 These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and won a name among three mighty men. 25 Indeed he was more honored than the thirty, but he did not attain to the first three. And David appointed him over his guard.
1 chron 11: 24-25
App: You gotta go through to get to!!!
he had to get through everything that came before him to get through the confrontation of the lion to get to
his testimony was his job interview
1 jn 5:4 who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God
You’ve got to have a Benaiah mindset “If I go in, the lion ain’t coming out!!!”
Dad used to say, “If you see me fighting a bear, pray for the bear!”
What’s one?
Pt: When you’ve had your training day, your confidence increases. You walk in the room w a different swag on 10
