My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

Introduction

Has anyone in here ever had an advocate?
Someone who has intervened for you
Illustration when Jon Dalton wouldn’t let me go to pistons game
In this passage, 4 ways that christ helps us:
He can help us avoid sin
He advocates for us
He is our propitiation
he gives us eternal life

Christ helps us avoid sin

My Little Children (new Christians)
My Little Children (new Christians)
This is to show them how to live
We see we can not sin if we choose to walk in the light (what does walking in the light mean practically?)

Christ advocates for us

What is a good advocator?
IS this guys a good advocator?
(play video of ridiculous lawyer)
Play other video of ridiculous lawyer
That guy is terrifying…and i wsih i could be Jon “the WV Hammer”
For all i know He is a fantastic advocate, but He is not nearly as good as Jesus is
John wants us to know that Jesus is standing as our defense lawyer if we have confessed Him as Lord.
He’s not the Texas Hammer, but John says he is Jesus the righteous
Who could be a better lawyer for me than the guy who never broke the law that I broke?
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: Walking and Talking (1 John 1:5–2:6)

Because Christ died for His people, He satisfied the justice of God.

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: Walking and Talking (1 John 1:5–2:6)

Because He lives for us at God’s right hand, He can apply His sacrifice to our needs day by day

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: Walking and Talking (1 John 1:5–2:6)

All He asks is that when we have failed we confess our sins.

What does confess mean?
The word confess means to say the same thing about it that God says about it
What does God say about our sin?
We look at and see that God is faithful and just to forgive our sins, but those two words are the ones that should be keeping us out of sin
We should remember that every time we sin we are going against a faithful and loving God
Christ’s substitutionary death means he has paid our penalty and now he is at the right hand of the father interceding on our behalf
HE is truly the greatest advocate

He is our Propitiation

We see that Christ took our punishment
We deserved wrath, but because of what Christ did we didn’t receive it if we accept His free gift
Many people live hoping that their good works will save them, but they don’t realize they need a substitution
Show video of good o meter
I realize that was a dumb video, but it had a good visual
There are people living with this mindset of “do good and it’ll outweigh the bad”
Our best works are filthy rags to God
The only good thing we have is through Christs propitiation for us
IF christ is our Propitiation I get to hold my head up knowing I’m free, not because of how awesome I am, but how awesome Jesus the Righteous is.

He gives us Eternal life

THis propitiation leads to the next thing…ETERNAL LIFE
This is more than the streets of Gold or pearly gates
This is more than seeing loved ones who have passed away
This is an eternity with God the Father, the SOn and the HS
NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THAT

Conclusion

Have you experienced these things with christ
I think many people are jumping on their parents religion
Justifying our sins
WE need to run to the grace of God
