Introduction

Several sources indicate that adults make 35,000 remotely conscious decisions a day, a child 3,000
Decisions matter: Decisions we make today determine stories we tell…
Major life decisions & little everyday decisions (explain the difference) (ie: college, profession, spouse, home, etc… / what to wear, eat, what to do, etc…)
This series has been birthed out of my own experience. Something that God is currently doing in my life. We all want to know what God’s direction is for our life and certainly God wants to make His steps know to us.
Psalm 37:23 NKJV
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.
Most people have more regret over things they did not do as apposed to things they did.
Today we are going to lay the foundation for this series.

1. God Cares About Who We Are More Than What We Do

1. God Cares About Who We Are More Than What We Do

1 Thessalonians 4:13 ESV
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 NLT
3 God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.
hagiasmos (hä-gē-äs-mo's) - consecration, purification; sanctification of heart and life.
Holy ~ Set Apart ~ Different from world
Different from world
Bible never talks about his will for your Career—Calling to be like Christ.
1 Thessalonians 4:7 NIV
7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
Bible never talks about his will for your Career—Calling to be like X.
Hebrews 12:14 NIV
14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Ex: Me being a pastor is secondary. More than being a pastor it’s God’s will for me to live a holy life. God would rather me do anything else with integrity than be a pastor without it.
You can be the most successful person in the world’s eyes, but If you don’t treat your spouse or your children right, you’re not pleasing God!
You can have a successful career, nice home, drive a nice vehicle but if you don’t love your neighbor, treat others with respect, you’re not pleasing God!
God’s will is more about who you are than what you do!
If you are becoming the right who—you will choose the right thing to do.
Lord: Speak to the Generations (Invite men to come forward - Older and younger and stand across the front)
Titus 2:1–8 NIV
1 You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. 3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. 6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. 7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Older men - “set an example” = “Model” (standing together)
titus 2.
Illustration: Women sit with one another
Older women: “reverent” & “not slanderers”

Lock puts it, “they are to carry into daily life the demeanour of priestesses in a temple”

“slanderers”
The New American Commentary: 1, 2 Timothy, Titus (3) Exhortations for Older Women (2:3)

Such women were not to be “slanderers.” The term for devil comes from the Greek root diabolos, meaning slanderer. Those persons who cannot control their tongues in speaking lies, false accusations, and spreading malicious gossip (whether true or untrue) do the work of Satan himself.

1 Timothy 3:11 NIV
11 In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.
Older women - “Teach” = this carries with it the idea of the active sense of “encouraging, advising, urging” (sitting together)
Older women - “Teach” = this carries with it the idea of the active sense of “encouraging, advising, urging” (sitting together)
Application: One of the greatest accomplishments we can achieve as a church is to have a group of men who love their wives and children well and a group of women who are reverent (not slanderers), who love their husbands well!

2. God Cares About The Why Before The What

Proverbs 16:2 NLT
2 People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives.
Our motives matter to God
Matthew 6:1 NIV
1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Galatians 1:10 NIV
10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 3:17 NIV
17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.
Colossians 3:17 NIV
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Pleasing God isn’t a few big decisions, it’s countless daily decisions of dying to self and following Christ.
Pleasing God isn’t a few big decisions, it’s countless daily decisions of dying to self and following Christ.

Closing

What if God showed us the whole picture when we first came to Him?
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

We need to realize with Christ there’s only one destination that He’s concerned about; but throughout life it’s not so much about Destination as it is about Direction!
Illustration: As a Parent
If one of my children is making bigger life decision my advice would have to be—What do I do? Whatever you do!
One of my children making bigger life decisions—What do I do? Whatever you do!
If you’re becoming the right who, God will help you choose the right do.
If you’re driven by the right why, God will lead you to the right what. More about the WHO and WHY—than the DO and WHAT
do.
Whatever you do—do it for the glory of God.
