Psalms

What is the Most Quoted Psalm?

All of Scripture is about Jesus

All scripture is about Jesus. Jesus is the focus all over the Bible. The sooner we realize this and learn to read the Bible with through a Jesus lens, the sooner we can have a more complete picture of who Jesus is.
Everything from Genesis to Revelation is solely about Jesus. Its what Jesus taught his disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:44-46.
Luke 24
Luke 24:44–46 ESV
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
Everything we read from this book must be understood in the context of Jesus and the cross.
One of the greatest places Jesus can be seen in the Old Testament is in the Psalms. The Psalms is quoted more often than any other Old Testament Book by the New Testament writers.
And is quoted the most out of all the Psalms.

All Scripture is about

In only 7 verses, includes the entire message of scripture.
We are going to read it together I am pretty sure you are going to miss it, because I missed it. You have to read it a number of times for it to stick and you also have to know other parts of scripture.
But when you do get it, when it clicks, you will begin to realize the beauty and power of this Psalm.
So lets read it together.
Psalm 110 NKJV
A Psalm of David. 1 The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” 2 The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! 3 Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth. 4 The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath. 6 He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall execute the heads of many countries. 7 He shall drink of the brook by the wayside; Therefore He shall lift up the head.
The two main ideas of this psalm is composed of two ideas: Messiah is King and Priest.

Pentecost

Acts 2:33–36 ESV
33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’ 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Peter goes straight to .
brings assurance that Jesus is both Lord and Messiah.
Lets go through it verse by verse.
Psalm 110:1–2 NKJV
1 The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” 2 The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

Luke 20 ESV
1 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up 2 and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” 3 He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, 4 was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?” 5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” 9 And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17 But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’? 18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” 19 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. 20 So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. 21 So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25 He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26 And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent. 27 There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” 39 Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40 For they no longer dared to ask him any question. 41 But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 43 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’ 44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?” 45 And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
Matthew 22:41-46 Jesus is interograted by three questions. After Jesus answers the questions he has a question for them.
Luke 20:
Matthew 22:41–46 ESV
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet” ’? 45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
: Jesus is interograted by three questions. After Jesus answers the questions he has a question for them.
How can the Messiah be the son of David but also the master of David?
Matthew 22:41
This is a direct messianic psalm.
They couldn’t answer him because they didn’t recognize Jesus and the incarnation.
Matthew 26:63–68 ESV
63 But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
When Jesus is once again being interrogated by the High Priest and pharisees. When Jesus is asked if he is the son of God the Messiah, Jesus goes straight to . Why? Because is a messianic psalm.
Matt 26:63-
Jesus quotes declaring himself the Messiah.
Even Paul in the book of Hebrews quotes to bring the identity of the Messiah to Jesus.
Hebrews 1:13 ESV
13 And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?
The answer is none, he said it to Messiah. Because an angel could not sit at the right hand of the father, only Jesus could take that place.
Paul also echoes in Phil. 2:9-11.
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Paul says that one day every tongue, everyone will confess that Jesus is Lord! Now this is easy for us to say amen, but it is not just a simple pronunciation with our mouth, but declaring that Jesus is Lord in every aspect of our life. This is best portrayed in the life of Polycarp.
Jesus is Lord!

Long line where you would say in front of an examiner saying ceesar is lord.
Polycarp would only say Jesus is Lord
He was arrested on the spot.
I recognize only one Lord!
Jesus is Lord!
He was burned at the stake because he wouldn’t say Ceaser is lord.
He would only recognize Jesus as Lord.
One day every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. That by the way is one of the main messages of the Revelation!
But do you live Jesus is Lord?
You are his subject and Jesus is your sovereign.

Jesus is Lord over every part of your life!
Jesus is my exclusive Lord.
Psalm 110:3 NKJV
3 Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth.
The lordship of Jesus is not forced, but rather voluntarily.
You are not forced to accept Jesus as Lord.
Psalm 110:4 NKJV
4 The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
We move from the king to the priest.
Melchizedek is a strange figure shows up unexpectedly.
He shows up in .
Abraham returns tithe to Melchizedek.
Melchizedek is both a priest and a king.
No Israelite king was also a priest.
This is pointing to the Messiah who is like Melchizedek he is the king priest.
Hebrews 7:1 ESV
1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
Heb.
Hebrews 6:19–20 ESV
19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek was a king priest.
Jesus is a king priest.
Jesus fulfills three roles in the sanctuary:

Lamb - Delivers from penalty of sin

Priest - Delivers from power of sin

King - Deliver from presence of sin

This is what it means to say that Jesus is Lord
to invite Jesus into every part of my life.
Jesus delivers me from every part of my life.
Colossians 2:15 ESV
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Psalm 110:5–6 NKJV
5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath. 6 He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall execute the heads of many countries.
God’s wrath is always consistent and compassionate.
God gives people many many opportunities and choices.
Jesus wins!
This is a picture of Jesus as conquering king.
Revelation 17:14 ESV
14 They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”
Psalm 110:7 NKJV
7 He shall drink of the brook by the wayside; Therefore He shall lift up the head.
At the end Jesus will drink the drink of victory.
Compare to Cross.
Jesus like a lamb.
Psalm 27:6–7 ESV
6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord. 7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me!
Everything depends on our recognition of the kingship of Christ over our hearts.
Christian faith is improved Hebrew faith.
The king has come and the king is coming again.
