The church that holds to the inerrant Word of God has the answer to our world’s dilemma—it is the Gospel of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
We should communicate that Gospel to our world as if we were throwing life preservers to drowning people.
We are not to warm the water to make them more comfortable, nor should we offer lessons on how to float.
We do not give self-help tips on how to manage life in the water.
Absolutely not!
We warn them they are going to drown if they do not come to the Savior.
Many churches have lost the moral courage to communicate this life-saving message because it makes people uncomfortable.
Stephen Davey, Nehemiah, ed.
Lalanne Barber, Wisdom Commentary Series (Apex, NC: Charity House Publishers, 2012), 141.
The Church has also lost its moral convictions.
In our generation, the materialism of the believer matches that of the world; the promiscuity and unfaithfulness of the believer mirrors the world; the self-centeredness of the believer almost surpasses that of the world.
At the very time when the world needs the answer, the Church has lost the answer.
The people of God today are in desperate need of revival.
This is true in the natural realm and also in the spiritual realm.
“Revival” is warning the believer who is living like an unbeliever.
His heart for God has stopped beating and the affections for God have subsided.
He no longer breathes the air of fellowship with the Lord, and he is in need of resuscitation by the Father.
David, a man after God’s own heart, needed reviving.
At one point he confessed:
Their one unanimous cry was for the book.
When a group of people, a family, an individual, or a church begin to demand the Scriptures, revival will not be far behind.
A native of India, writing to a friend about a revival they were having, wrote in English as he pronounced it in his native tongue: “We are having a great re-Bible here!”
What a perfect slip of the pen.
A revival is, indeed, when people are “re-Bibled.”
They hunger to hear, read, and learn the Word of God:
Great Awakening
joy of Yahweh is your refuge
There are two reasons for the exhortation to rejoice: (1) the people had repented, and (2) this was the first day of the seventh month, the Feast of Trumpets, which was to be a day of rejoicing (Lev 23:23–25; Deut 16:15).
The people must have been repentant for disobeying the law (v.
10).
A similar reaction occurred in the time of Josiah (2 Kgs 22:11–13, 19).
The Word of God, when read, has the power to transform lives today just as it had in the time of both Josiah and Ezra.
The Bible convicts, changes, and guides lives.
In the time of Ezra the people realized that the Babylonian captivity was a result of disobedience.
Only genuine repentance before God could bring about a real change in the community.
The living power of the Word of God still liberates people from their own various forms of captivity.
Leaders pointed out God’s mercy to the people.
Those who teach must show God’s justice and the need for repentance but must not forget to emphasize God’s love and mercy.
