Imagine you have a really nice pair of winter gloves, write your name on them, SAMUEL bring them to school. And then the class bully comes along and blacksout uel. These are mine he says. What are you going to do? Whose hands are going to fill those gloves, what are those gloves going t do on the school yard - punch some kid, instead of hand on back, instead of building forts together, smash them down!

TO understand how Jesus us invites not only to pray, but to live, to understand the grace He promises by the Father and the Spirit. It is critical that we have a prelude to our prayer, that rests, and trusts in Christ bring us into a relationship with the one who sits in third heaven fulness of glory power, wisdom, and through Christ - who has Sonship - invites us to pray to God in his relationship - we can call Him daddy - do that together. Necessary because now prayer is going to be work! From contemplation of God as Father, from that pause deep breath, turning to him, face to face like baby with parent light up with recognition, from that we must go to the bold work of actually asking, supplicating. Should feel a little like a kid in line to sit on Santa Clause’s lap - OK he’s going to ask me what do I want - go through all these different things. And now in the presence of a near and gracious God - don’t discount that this is a prayer originally - In Aramaic, not the temple or synagogue liturgy prayers of rabbi’s, priests in Hebrew - but in language of the people - not with long titles and elaborate detail of what we specifically must ask.
In fact until people realized closest parallel is an Aramaic prayer from before the temple was destroyed in 70AD, many Christian teacher taught the prayer as eschatological praying for end times kingdom and not day to day life now. Other taught it as a new covenant prayer that contains the whole gospel nt in miniature. But when realized the differences to Jewish Aramaic prayer and it similarities realize prayer model for daily life: Aramaic Qaddish
Jermias sees Jesus summarizing kaddish and adding the new “We requests”. But even in the threee Thee requests you sense this pattern that Jesus teaches in more open ended for comon people like yo and me to pray. But with God near as Father through Christ in whose name we invoke him - what shall we ask?

And that’s why I say you should feel like kid deciding what do I ask - just for mystelf, for God’s church, for lost what? ANd here we ought to be so thankful for Jesus as fully human teaching us the perfect pattern for comunicatin g with God. Bring order to our requests and shows us even what we should want most!

A. The Hallowing of The Name is First of all An Action We Plead God to Do (in us)
Some including myself have explained rightly that hallowing the name is concerned about making God’s Name, Character, His Presence, HIs Perfection, Attributes, His Work famous! This is true and it is what the second commandment postively requires. But this is prayer and though we understand making God famous and wieighty and glorified is the goal, the means is not - let’s pray every day, challenge ourselves to hallow God’s name. Let’s all make his name famous! No, this is prayer and the petition, every bit as much as for the God’s kingdom to come , and His will to be done, is for God to act.
If we had lives like those gloves that had God’s anme, His image writeen all over them, in our fall, in our sin, in your sinful condition and mine, we have let Satan write his name all over us, and we must confess that instead of wearing our lives so to speak - to do the work of the Lord, relfect the character of the Lord on playground, clarrom and workshop , and home of human life - we end up doing the work of Satan in selfishenss, in bitterness, in anger, in sheer boredom with little earthly amusements. And no amount of us trying to be good can get God’s name re-written on us!
Listen to what the Bible says about having the Name of the Lord placed upon you, upon us as the people of God.
Ezekiel 36:22–23 ESV
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
This is what we are praying for. Christ as Messiah would be God coming to His people among the nations, where we have effaced his name, and Jesus must vindicate the holiness of God’s own Great Name in our midst. And the nations will know.
Ezekiel 39:7 ESV
“And my holy name I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel.
These are prophesies that Christ would fulfill not only in believing Israel, but among the Gentiles - called by God’s name. Listen to Jesus’ mission. He is going to the Cross, the hour had not yet come John keeps repeating because can’t show His work unless on the Cross; He’s heading tothe Cross and he says:
John 12:28 ESV
Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
He is the day before the Cross and he explains:
John 17:6a ESV
“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
And the purpose is so that the HOly Name of the Father which he came to reveal - would abide in us - the full revelation of His love, HOliness, his character, HIs plan
John 17:26 ESV
I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
Do you remember when Nadab and Abriam rebeeled against God said even though live maong your people, we don’t want your name the way you reveal it; God says to them:
Leviticus 10:3 ESV
Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’ ” And Aaron held his peace.
God’s name is to be placed on his people in a way that God is set aparat as holy, reverent fear HIs Word, HIs glory shine in how they live and worship and play and do life - what it means for God to dwell in the midst of us.
If you are a people called by God’s name, then must in a radically inward way take root:
Leviticus 22:32 ESV
And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,
This is what we are praying in this first request, God through Christ, by the HOly Spiriti reveal in us Your Name your word your gospel, everything you are about). It is very much like the prayer of Moses:
Exodus 33:18 ESV
Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
Cause that to be known and to be honoured both for myself and others! This request earnestly prayed is a method of you taking those gloves of your life back from Satan, having God writ His name on them, and then by His writing of a new holy name - that represetn all he’s about, and all I am going to be about now too - I go out into the playgroud and live for Him.
We see that this process begun by grace, being slowly perfected by grace in Christ’s people, one day will be complete
Revelation 3:12 ESV
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
So this first request is certainly not asking God become holy, but rather that his holiness would be magnified and reflect in us. That God would display his Name on earth throug us. That people woud be brought into reference with God - feeling His presence, holiness, goodness. We are to feel that this is our biggest desire in life and the first thing as we sort through our list of needs and wants - taht we bring to Go d this is the most crucila and our first one - God that you through Christ would e truly kown and truly honouered! Actually it is only this request that will last. There will be a time when God’s kigdom will come fully, when we will know HIs will fully, won’t need His Word, time when we won’t have to ask for daily bread, no physical need lacking, time when no debts or temptations; so much of the rest of the prayer is aobut the stuff of earth and getting God’s glory into it in a dialy way; but this prayer request or first and most important one is about earth and your future life in heaven - that God known more and more fully and honoured and exhbiited more and more through us!
But that brings us to the second thing you must know to pray as jessu teaches us here.- not only that your are petitioniing God for this santifcating of his name, you also need to know what His name represents!
And that brings us to the second thing you must know - not only that your are petitioniing God for this santifcating of his name, you also need to know what His name represents!
B. God’s Name isn’t Just a Title (It is His HImself, HIs Essence, HIs Attreibutes, HIs Works, His Word)
THough some of us may knwo the meaning of our names, none of us are our names completely - my name mens leader of Stregth - as much as I may puruse that as father, pastor, elder, citizen - I am not fullly my name. Others Little Rock, Auden -faithful friend. Elissa - consecrated to God ; unfortnuate Mara - or Caleb dog. be thankful we’re not our name. Title God supreme being - but God reveals Hisemlf with perosnal covenant name - YAWHEH - esssense ceoI’m the self existant God I am Who I am , Will be who I Will Be, here is my covenant name - absoo.utely Faithful One. God’s character, works, essence all wrapped up in His name, so when you seek to sanctify HIs name, ask the HOly Spiriti - use your word, your people, worship - for that to hpappen - say - baptizedi nto your great name, by Grace of Jesus let me - carry that name to the world , undestand that what is really happening is that as you Know and understaand all those excellencies, perfections of God - you are actually being held up and purified and you are trusting in God HImself,
Psalm 20:7 ESV
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
What do people call you? First or last name, nick name. In NA basically say call natyhting you wnat, just don’t call me late for dinner. But I’ve shared story of Scottish pastor and theologian SF - always call by last name, Great privilege - close friend known you for a while. Feel taht here - REverend , Pastor - some Harry - understand that’s what God is giving you tyhe great privellege of doing with HIm, even revelaing HIs Name wich is power and love and assurance in Christ in you!
And as much as this opeinng petititons is a lament and confession, taht God I don’t know your name well enough, don’t know all you represent - don’t stuy your Word and actions, don’t glroy in your work sin creation and science and beauty enoguh Don’t take hold of gospel promises wrapped in up in your name - and I am praying for that - it is also a rejoiceing that God you have shown me your goodness and mercy in Jesus who - shows me you ar goodnes sand mercy to me! So I run to your name and ask that I’d know you more, i Run to your name
Proverbs 18:10 ESV
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
And knowing that we are seeking for God’s work of sanctifying us, and that is most importantly abouting knowing HIm by HIs name - his wll, proiseis word, his woks; we need to what specific action in our lives we ought to be praying about to have this happen!
C. Hallowing The Name is Second of All about Us Displaying God’s Holiness
And here we find ourselves in the reality of faithfilled living of Ora et Laboura. We are to pray that God be magnified in the world around us and in our lives. We are to be in prayer often and first about that happening. But we are also to live working for the realization of that prayer! Look at where our witnessing has to come from in the first part of this verse:
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Similarly in how we treat each other what is the source of that:
Ephesians 5:20–21 ESV
giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Reverencing Christ, hnouring him in our hearts -raing for his glory and honour in our world is to means that we are praying for God being stapart and served as the Holy One.
God already has the crown of glory, nothing we or even this world can do actually adds to his glory. But it’s like shining up that crown for the world to see, we can add to his glory in respect to how it is shown in this world. And that’s the specific content of our praying and working
The first way we can pray for this and work for this is
i. Appreciate God’s Shining-Forth - in creation and in redemption and in providence. We are to stop in prayer and take note,. Make that weighty by acknowledging God’s work and character and - deliverance, his patience, his beauty do you do that in your own life -
Tell you again sometimes life goes by to fast, some time we go by too fast. Rain, warmth, establish boundaries of nations,
ii. Revere God’s Awesomeness
There is a phrase we here less and less about: “The fear of the LORD” is it in this place, in your home - are you a God-fearing people - Listen that’s not about fear of punishment - healthy awe completely other - like Narnia - Nickabrick - not a tame lion, not a word, image, metaphor, God is God - completely other yet one we must deal with - - not trifle with his - not make this time to meet with him in special way about us and our needs, entertain -
Philippians 2:12 ESV
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
Noi question the access the help, the come with anyting tome we have in the new covenant. No more holy rituals and holy places like in the OT. But listen to
Hebrews 12:28–29 ESV
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Pray that God would be upheld and the things of God with that awe, of holy holy holy in you in his people, in your home. That goes for every mention of God’s name. Ie Shakespeare in the Park - why adult material - ask - not sexual innuendo but extremely violent. But didn’t even register that god’s name taken in vain: Chapel writes: Their warning sticker should have read: “Warning: God’s name will be taken in vain. This play is thus not suitable for children or adults. This play is not suitable for anyone who hallows God’s name.”

William Ames - Putirna pastor teacher extradoanire in 16th century, exile to HOlland. Not so much anger, prudish I am so much holier I don’t take GOd’s name like that - But a sorrow in our heart, a pity for peopel that don’t yet know LORD and gentle loving witness! ie. Gr 7-8 What about God. I worship that God. What about Jesus! Adult you know - I didn’t know so religious.
Thomas Watson says - hallow his name, when you feel for God, have sympathy for HIm when His name is dragged through the mud. You grieve it. Like Moses only few short weeks after they saw and heard glory of God - smashes those tablers. Do you take heart the dshonour of God. Like Nehemiah - holy things, the temple - countenance changes:
Nehemiah 2:2 ESV
And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of the heart.” Then I was very much afraid.
Listen to
Nehemiah 9:5 ESV
Then the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
And if you know God in your life like this, if HOly Spirit at work in you you know how else you and those around you who know the Lord should be acknowleging God’s glory?
iv. Give Glory to God Regularly in Everyday Life & Work
you have heard of JSB - SDG. You kjnow in all we do we are to give glory to God - unworthy servants - but God really at work nonetheless:
1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
Think of John the Baptist - event man Rock star - but He must increase I must decrease, I don’t want your glory - deflect it all to big deal Christ! So we say, as we did what surgeon did phenomenal healing work of fixing Reuben's heart:
Psalm 115:1 ESV
Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
You don’t want the alternative do you? Fallen man is a glory-theif.
Romans 1:21 ESV
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Why do peole do this:
Romans 1:28a ESV
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
Hallow God’s name when we are regularly acknowledging Him and giving thanks. DOn’t be like those 9 lepers who didn’t return. Pray all, and have church, and homes and firendship often giving thanks to him, sanctrifying His gifts given to us in prayer!
But connected to this.
v. LIft Up HIs Name in Praise: Can you imagine living in world without sound, wihtou music. Living a Christian life without PRAISE: God’s Name is hallowed where praise lives in the hearts of his people and his church, in habits the praise sof Israel. What a shame a Christian wihtout a song, a church with no heartfilled rejoicing!
Psalm 71:8 ESV
My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day.
says praise befits us!
But from which passage do you most often here this word hallowed? To make holy? .
vi. Hallow God’s Sabbath Day
Jeremiah 17:22 ESV
And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath or do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers.
God’s name is not hallowed if his Sabbath and now for us the Lord’s Day, Xn Sabbath is broken - not just showing up for worship - but a day to rest in our homes to turn to him delight in him
Powerful Way to hallow God's name confronted with again and again is to contend for his truth - name exalted in his truth, And in our increasingly post-Christian culture so many opportunities.
vii. Contend for God’s Truth:
Jude 3 ESV
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
Mr. Valiant for Truth. Pilgrim’s Progress. Not just pounding truth - but an opportunity to speak for Christ to those who know him and those who don’t
Not just poudning truth - but a tiness for Christ to those who know him and those who don’t
viii. Seek to Witness by counsel, prayer and example.
Do you seek for and pray for the advance of others in their walk with Christ?
Need to say it again and start in prayer:
Joshua 24:15 ESV
And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Pray that for the lost that they would honour the Son of God sent to save this world:
John 5:23 ESV
that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Need to believe that even for nations:
Psalm 33:12 ESV
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
This is what we are praying in the first request - not just outward honouring, formally show up once a week, or pray before a meal, but that the vital relationship with God inwardly - flaming zeal for His glory made manifest on earth. Imagine someone asks for a glass of wine, give them an empty glass. Like Prometheus, Jupiter asked for a sacrifice and he ate the flesh of the animal and gave the god the bones, wrapped u p in old skin. Substance wasn't there.

God wants our lives and our world to be full of His glory - our most important prayer is for this to happen. Think again of those gloves. In biblical world it wasn’t gloves but vessels, temple vessels - only holy things. Set apart from common use, ones handled for God and use for His people - in a sense for making people holy and dedicated to LORD and clean.

Prophesy in coming of Jesus is that in that day, every vessel
Zechariah 14:21 ESV
And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the meat of the sacrifice in them. And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day.
Dear Congregation,
“Let us therefore realize that the only persons who duly and properly gird themselves to pray are those who are so moved by God’s majesty that freed from earthly cares and affections they come to it. And the
This sanctifying God’s name is first in our prayer and first in our lives. As Calvin puts it: only persons who duly and properly gird themselves to pray, are those who are so moved by God’s majesty that freed from earthly cares and affections they come to it.
ie. raise hands = rite of raising the hands means that men remember they are far removed from God unless they raise their thoughts on high. As it is also said in the psalm: “To thee… I have lifted up my soul” [ There are no holy gloves, no holy pots. Elisha Elisa in feminine name that means - our whole lives consecrated set apart - everything touched by glory of God given for glory of God - that is what we are praying for here and depending on God through Christ in the Holy Spirit to do with our lives. We’re common dirty broken pots, and God is not only going to make them holy, but like those OT temple vessels, our lives becomes vessels go into the world set apart - to work for his glory! Make my life, my people, my family, neighbours - holy unto you Lord!
