Text

Exodus 25:1–9 KJV 1900
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering. 3 And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass, 4 And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair, 5 And rams’ skins dyed red, and badgers’ skins, and shittim wood, 6 Oil for the light, spices for anointing oil, and for sweet incense, 7 Onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ephod, and in the breastplate. 8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
I want to talk to us for just a little bit tonight on a prayer model that was developed and was and is still used by the Mangun family for decades. Bishop G. A. Mangun used this model for 70 years. His Son G. Anthony Mangun, the current pastor of one of the largest churches in the UPC, uses this prayer model every day. His son Gentry A. Mangun who has already been named the next pastor of POA, uses this model every day to. Now, why does that make it so special? Well, if you’ve ever been to POA, you’d probably know what I’m talking about. It is a church that seats around 3,000 souls in a town of less than 50,000. To put that in perspective, we have a church that seats 300 in a town of 150,000. The Manguns are soul winners. They attracted the attention and gained the respect of presidents, governors and other high ranking officials. They’ve done it without compromising the truth. When you go to BOTT, you realize instantly that the church is full of the Holy Ghost. It is saturated in the spirit. They aren’t messing around. The people of POA are all involved in prayer. They have one lady that has a daily prayer meeting at her house that is been going continuously for over 500 days and has a few hundred people coming and going at any given hour of the day.
This prayer model that I’m going to share with you tonight is what the Manguns used to build their church. There are other models, including the one Jesus gave us in Matthew chapter 6. In fact, the model I’m giving you tonight very closely resembles that one. You can use any model that works for you, but use something. Without some type of prayer model we tend to have ineffective prayer time. If you have ineffective prayer time, eventually you will start skipping prayer. If you start skipping prayer, the church gets weaker. There is a stark difference between a church that prays and a church that doesn’t. We’ve felt it here. We’ve come in this place after a season of prayer and felt the difference.
At the section 1 Ministers Christmas party last month a prayer need was brought up at the start of it. Instantly all the preachers stood and began to pray, and without missing a beat the Holy Ghost swept into that place. It didn’t take hours, minutes or even seconds. It was instant. I told michele afterwards, did you feel that when we all started praying? She said, yes, I wondered if you noticed it. There is something different about prayer when a lot of saints get together that are ready to pray instantly. It is way more effective, way more powerful. You can feel a difference in the atmosphere. I believe we can have that every time we come together if we will follow a model for prayer.
Here’s the kind of prayer that we have without a model:
Demonstrate weak repetitive prayer
Let’s face it, we all do it at times. We’re all tired. We’re all in a hurry. We want to get into the Holy of Holies and make a request of God. So, we try to skip right to it. Listen,
Don’t be so quick to enter the Holy of Holies that you blow right by the brazen altar.
God expects a sacrifice before he lets us into his presence.
When we look at the Lord’s prayer, he warns us of this weak prayer life that has no effect.
Matt 6:5-
Matthew 6:5–8 KJV 1900
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
From that passage we learn that we can’t be proud of our prayer life. It is meant to be a sacrifice, not something to boast about. We also see that we shouldn’t use vain repetitions. Don’t just keep repeating the same words over and over. Ironically, many people vainly just repeat the word’s of the Lord’s prayer over an over even though it was mean to be a model. He said, pray after this manner. The 3rd thing we learn from Matt chapter 6 is that God already knows what we need before we ask it. So, why are we rushing to the Holy of Holies to ask him something as if He doesn’t already know. He knows the words in your mind before they tough your tongue. So, the models for prayer are not so God can learn what we are dealing with, he knows that already, the model for prayer is so that we can make a sacrifice and give God the Glory that he deserves.
Alright, let’s get into this lesson. The first thing we should notice about our text is that the tabernacle was supposed to be a pattern.
Exodus 25:8–9 KJV 1900
8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
The primary purpose of this pattern was to create a way for God to dwell among us. That’s all that God really wants. He wants communion with us. He wants a relationship with us. The tabernacle was the Old Testament pattern for this. Today, we are the tabernacle.
1 Cor
1 Corinthians 3:16 KJV 1900
16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
So, today we are God’s tabernacle. Tabernacle literally means dwelling place. I’m God’s house. You’re God’s house. He longs to live inside of you. So, how do we make that happen? We can follow the Old Testament pattern to see how they were able to keep God dwelling in their Tabernacle.
We’re going to touch on 8 parts of the Tabernacle and use them as a model for prayer that is effective at entering into the Holy of Holies every time you pray. They are:
The Entrance gate
The Brazen Altar
The Laver of Water
The Five Pillars (Entrance to Holy Place)
The Holy Place
The Golden CandleStick
The Table of Showbread
The Altar of Incense
The Holy of Holies
For each piece of furniture in the tabernacle, I’m going to give you a brief description for the sake of time, and then some verses that go with this stage of prayer, then some specific things that you can pray during this stage, and then a short example of how you might pray.

Entrance Gate

Desc

There was only one entry into the Tabernacle, and it was also the exit. There was no side door, or back door that you use to take a shortcut to the throne room. Jesus said, I am the door and no man comes to the Father but by me.
The gate had 4 columns which are symbolic of the 4 gospels of Jesus, and they were draped with linen twisted together of blue, purple and scarlet. The blue represents the deity of Christ, the purple his royalty, and the scarlet for the blood he shed for us. He is the way, the Truth, and the life.

Focus

When you are starting your prayer at the Gate, your primary focus in on praising Jesus. David said, We enter his gates with Thanksgiving in our heart, and we enter his courts with praise.
illustrate the gates/courts of a King’s castle

Scriptures

Psalm 150:1 KJV 1900
1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: Praise him in the firmament of his power.
Psalm 106:1 KJV 1900
1 Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: For his mercy endureth for ever.
Hebrews 13:15 KJV 1900
15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJV 1900
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
There are so many more, but you get the point. Find scriptures like this and learn them. quote them while you are walking through the entrance gate.

Things to pray for

Give thanks for:
Jesus our saviour
Salvation
The Truth
Family
Friends
Health
Financial Blessings
home/car etc.
Food Water and Shelter
Clothing
A job
Folks, we have so much to be thankful for.

Example

Father, I enter your gates with thanksgiving, I’m walking into this prayer with a praise in my heart. You are mighty, you are awesome, you are my God. You alone are my saviour, there is no other. You are the only wise King. You are the Lord of Lord, King of kings. The lily of the valley, the rose of sharon. You are my el shaddai. You are my adonai. You are great and greatly to be praise. I thank you for every thing you have done.
You can stay right there for a long time, and you should. If you need to expand your praise vocabulary, you can read the Psalms, and you can also try ...
Brother Mohlenpah’s prayer alphabet.
Now, I could go on, but we have 8 other pieces of furniture to cover, but you can see already that this prayer is going to be more effective out of the gate that anything we can do on our own without using a model that God has shown us in scripture.

Brazen Altar

Desc

This first stop inside the outer courts which were still in the open air even though we are inside the walls of the tabernacle is called the Brazen Altar. It is a place where things go to die. It isn’t pleasant, but it is a necessity. You didn’t dare enter the Holy of Holies without a sacrifice on this altar. It was so important, that it was significantly larger than the Ark of the Covenant. The altar was the largest thing in the temple besides the walls themselves.
Romans 12:1 KJV 1900
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
In the Old Testament they offered dead sacrifices. This means they couldn’t get up and walk away. We are living sacrifices. We have the ability to get up and walk away. That’s why we have to keep putting our flesh on this altar daily. The primary reason people don’t walk in the Spirit as scripture commands us, is because they don’t keep their flesh on this altar.

Scripture

Ezekiel 18:21 KJV 1900
21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
Ez 18:21
Proverbs 28:13 KJV 1900
13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Acts 3:19 KJV 1900
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Things to Pray

I am a sinner, as all have sinned
I repent of my sins of omission - things I should have said and done, but didn’t
I repent of my sins of commission - things I should not have done or said, but did.
Let none of the works of the flesh be found in me, but let the fruit of the Spirit be present in me.

Example

Oh Lord, forgive me of my lust and my pride. Cleanse me from within and without. Create in me a clean heart and a right spirit. Renew my mind with the washing and regeneration of your spirit. I’m sorry for anything I’ve done. Search my heart, look in the secret places of my heart. Take any wickedness from me, in Jesus name.

The Laver of Water

Desc

This next piece of furniture was directly after the altar in the outer courts. The altar was a bloody place, and the laver of water was a place to be cleansed. it is symbolic of the baptismal tank behind me. For after repentance we are commanded to be baptised. When Moses left Egypt that symbol of sin, he also had to go through the waters of the red sea where they were cleansed of their enemies.
When the priest looked into the laver, they saw two reflections. One in the water, and one in the metal basin. This is how God shows us who we really are, and who we are in Him. The best way to see this today is to look at the mirror of the Word.
Ephesians 5:25–27 KJV 1900
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Eph
The Word is what cleanses the Church.

Scripture

Psalm 51:2 KJV 1900
2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.
Isaiah 55:11 KJV 1900
11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: It shall not return unto me void, But it shall accomplish that which I please, And it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Is
Hebrews 4:12 KJV 1900
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Heb
2 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Things to pray

Cleans my hands, heart, and mind
Le me be holy and You are Holy.
Remove anything that is in me that is not like you.

Example

I ask you to cleanse me by the power of the Word. Let your word speak to me and wash me from all the sin and iniquity. Give me clean hands and a pure heart. Protect me from the vanity of deceitfulness. Let me become who your Word tells me I can be. Let me remember I am a child of God. I am forgiven, I am set free. You purchased me, and I am yours forever Lord. Let nothing separate me from your Lord.

The Five Pillars (Entrance to the Holy Place)

Desc

Just like the initial entrance to the Tabernacle, we now come to another wall with five pillars that allows us to go from the outer court into the Holy place. Not the Holy of Holies, but we’re almost there. The Holy place holds the Golden Candlestick, the altar of incense, and the table of showbread. Before we enter that place, it is a good idea to use the 5 pillars to signify the five descriptive names of God give in
Isaiah 9:6 KJV 1900
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Scripture

Psalm 40:5 KJV 1900
5 Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward: They cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.
Isaiah 63:16 KJV 1900
16 Doubtless thou art our father, Though Abraham be ignorant of us, And Israel acknowledge us not: Thou, O Lord, art our father, our redeemer; Thy name is from everlasting.
John 16:23 KJV 1900
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
John 14:27 KJV 1900
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Things to pray

Pray for direction and counsel
Pray for things that you need God to move in a mighty way since he is the might God.
Pray for personal needs only a father can provide
Pray for peace in every situation that needs it.

Example

Jesus Christ, you are wonderful. You wonderful in my life. There is no God like you, none. You are my wonderful saviour. You are a wonderful friend that sticks closer than any brother.
Counsel me to be a better husband. I want to be a better father. Give us direction in this situation.
You are the mighty God! I know you framed the world with your words. I know that nothing is impossible for you, and this situation is no different.
You are my Father. I am a son of God. I know you want give me stones when I ask for bread. Lord I love you, abba father. I want to be an obedient child.
give me that peace that surpasses all understanding. Peace in the middle of this storm. In Jesus name.

The Holy Place

The Golden CandleStick

Desc

This was the only source of light inside the Holy place save the tiny light from the altar of incense. No natural light could penetrate the walls of badger skin. It was pitch black unless this candle stayed lit. It was the job of the Priest to make sure this light never went out. The oil was always filled, and the candle was properly trimmed all the time. This is a good representation of the Holy Spirit in our lives today. We must stay full of God’s Spirit.

Scripture

Psalm 27:1 KJV 1900
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Ps 27
Isaiah 60:1 KJV 1900
1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, And the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
Matthew 5:14 KJV 1900
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Ephesians 5:8 KJV 1900
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Eph

Things to pray

I pray for light and direction for:
My family
My life
My church
Let there be an outpouring of your Spirit in our church, our city , and our community
Let your Spirit fall upon all flesh like your word promises.
Send a light into countries where there is no missionary that preaches the truth, and into cities across America that are in darkness.

Example

I need to be baptized today with the Holy Ghost and fire. Let the oil of your presence flow over me, and through me, and fill me till my cup overflows. Baptize me with a fresh tough of the Holy Ghost. Let your anointing flow over me. Let your light shine through me and on me.
Let the gifts of your Spirit be loosed in our church services for the edification of the body. Let our church become that city on a hill. Let those that bring the Gospel to other parts of the world, be safe and protected today. Let your light shine out of them. Give them miraculous encounters with each person they great today.
If you are a PIM, you might take time here to pray for that missionary family too

The Table of Showbread

Desc

The showbread represents the Word of God, and the table is those that carry the Word of God to lost soul. This portion of the prayer is about focusing on two things. Praying for our pastors, evangelists, missionaries, teachers, and also for the lost souls that they are trying to reach.

Scripture

Deuteronomy 8:16 KJV 1900
16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
Deut
Nehemiah 9:20 KJV 1900
20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.
John 6:35 KJV 1900
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
John 6:51 KJV 1900
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Things to pray

Speak and pray the Word
Lord lead me to Scriptures that meet my needs today.
Give me my daily bread
Give me the right words to speak when I meet people today
I pray for you to bless my pastor and the church staff
I pray you bless every preacher of the truth
Home and foreign Missionaries
I pray for the lost souls in my family, community. Help us to reach them

Example

I thank you for every promise in the word of God. I am more than a conquer. Greater is he that is within me, than he that is in the world. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. I pray for every preacher who preaches the Truth today. Anoint them and let their minds be quickened. Bless my pastor and the ministers in our church. Bless him in health and in finance. Bless him with an anointing to reach the people you’ve burdened him with in this city. I pray for every North American Missionary, and every Foreign one. I pray for every lost soul that we have a chance to reach before you return. Lord send us a harvest of lost souls. Lead us to them. Guide our words when we speak to them.

The Altar of Incense

Desc

This altar was much smaller than the first one, but no less significant. It is here that continual sweet smelling fragrance was sent up as worship to the Most High God. Twice a day the incense was burned, and the aroma filled the holy place and surely seeped into the Holy of Holies so that God was always blessed with this form of worship. The altar was lit with coals from the brazen altar, reminding us once again that sacrifice must precede worship. It as at this juncture that we make our petitions to God known. We also spend a considerable amount of time in worship to God in Spirit and in Truth. This worship is what carries you into the next realm of prayer, the Holy of Holies. In His presence.

Scripture

Psalm 141:2 KJV 1900
2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; And the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Jeremiah 17:26 KJV 1900
26 And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the Lord.
Hebrews 13:10 KJV 1900
10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
Jere
Hebrews 13:15 KJV 1900
15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Things to pray

Personal needs

family needs
Church family with special needs
The needs for the body of Christ
Worship

Example

Almighty God, I bring to your my personal sacrifice of worship. I thank you for every blessing. I thank you for every test and trial. I think you for allowing me to walk with you and for continuing to walk with me.
I intercede now for the needs of my family, my church, and my community. I plead the blood over them all, in Jesus name. I worship you Jesus. I give you all the glory forever and ever. I give you my all in all. I surrender all to you. I put my trust, will, desires, and emotions into your hands. I am yours. I am forever yours. You are so Holy. You are righteous, pure and mighty. O, great God. I love you more than ever. I will always serve you Jesus.

The Holy of Holies

Desc

The Veil hung between the Holy place, and the Holy of Holies. This was the final barrier between a pure Holy God, and mankind that had been marred by sin. This Veil wouldn’t have been needed if Adam and Even had forgone that forbidden fruit. The veil could not even be touched by anyone but the High priest. Even he couldn’t touch it or dare enter the Holy of Holies except once a year on the Day of Atonement to sprinkle blood on the Mercy Seat of the Ark.
We know that this Veil was symbolically torn when Jesus died on the Cross. He took down the barrier. Now we can have access to this most Holy place, but only after we’ve laid down all of our sins and come in Thanksgiving, Praise, and Worship before the Almighty God. We cannot just run past all the other things in the Tabernacle and enter this Holy place. No, you have to follow the pattern that God laid out for us to meet with Him. When you do, you will find that your prayers are no longe weak and anemic, but instead that will be effectual and fervent.
We have the Ark with the Mercy Seat on top of it. Inside we have the pot of manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of stone where God gave us his Law. We are reminded that the Mercy Seat is above the Law, but we don’t do away with the Law. We need it to be written on our hearts as the Bible says.

Scripture

Psalm 24:3–5 KJV 1900
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; Who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, Nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Psalm 15:1–5 KJV 1900
1 Lord, Who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, And speaketh the truth in his heart. 3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, Nor doeth evil to his neighbour, Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. 4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; But he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. 5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, Nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.
Matthew 27:51 KJV 1900
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Hebrews 4:16 KJV 1900
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Things to pray

The Veil reminds of the torn body of Jesus, and we thank Him for giving us access to the Holy of Holies
The mercy Seat reminds us of new mercies every morning.
The Manna helps us desire the Word and the Strength we get from it.
The 10 Commandments remind us to be obident servants
The Rod that budded, reminds us to move with authority granted to me by God’s presence and annointing
Finally, let the Spirit pray for you and through you at this time. - Honestly, this is what will happen most of the time you are at this stage in prayer

Example

I could give you an example, but like I said, there isn’t much to say here. When you reach this place, you won’t be saying much in your native language. There is an example in the book, and you can read it, but I think brother Mangun just puts into words something that is difficult to describe with words so that we can have something to read.

Conclusion:

This is just one model of how you can have more effective prayer. A prayer that is in context and intentional. It is a very good model to follow. If you use something else that works, then keep doing it, but I wanted to help some of us to figure how to go deeper in prayer because where this church is heading it is going to require some saints that will get a hold of the horns of the altar and pray like we have never prayed. It must be daily. It must be intentional, it must become a lifestyle. I’ve only scratched the surface of this prayer model due to time constraints. You’ll really need to read the book if you want to know more in depth. I highly recommend reading it yourself, and using it to improve your prayer life. I know it will. God Bless you.
