35 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
This is the Word of God
inerrant, infallible, inspired;
written by God, written for us,
that we might know what to believe
that we might know how to live
and that on its pages we might meet
The Living Christ.
I. The Last part of the sermon (V.25-35)
I. The Last part of the sermon (V.25-35)
25 For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,
31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’
Peter focuses on David here, the former king and national hero David was dead and Berried
29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
:
He contradicts this with our Lord
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts 2:31-32
David is dead, and He is buried, but Jesus is very much alive, and every one of listeners were witnesses to this event.
33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
: 33-
Peter goes on to say that:
Christ is exalted an the right hand of God
The right hand is the highest place of esteem of a king
2. The holy spirit has been poured out which is what they are seeing.
II. The People’s Responce
II. The People’s Responce
ESV36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
In verse 37 they asked what they Should do?
The idea applied here is they made a huge mistake and want to make the future right.
Those that listened to Peter’s sermon took them personally and they had a profound amount of regret for what they had done.
Most of them in all likelihood had agreed with the action of putting Jesus to death.
Peter’s information on who Jesus was came as a major shock to them and they were pierced to the heart by what He said.
The scripture says they were pierced to the heart. It literally means the feeling of being stabbed with a knife, it meant that they had profound regret.
This instance is the only time the term is used in the New Testament
Note the power of the crucifixion in Scripture.
II. The Answer 38-40
II. The Answer 38-40
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
ESV38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter Begins By telling them to repent.
The word repent literally means to make a 180 degree turn from sinful ways It shows a change of direction in life not just a change of attitude, but of action too.
Repent shows a complete Change of mind(note I am sorry and will you forgive me)
Peter continues and says be Baptized, so why does it sound like Baptism is a part of salvation here?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
ESV38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
We must study all of Scripture and through all of Scripture it is clear that Baptism does not save you.
40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
What peter is saying is repent and then be Baptized as a visible show of your repentance
We must study all of Scripture and through all of Scripture it is basally clear that Baptism does not save you. What peter is saying is repent and then be Baptized as a visible show of your repentance To Israel Circumcision was a visible external marker of the fact that an individual was part of the covenant. Baptism is a visible external show of one’s relationship with Christ. Baptism is not for the forgiveness of sins but rather is a visible example of that forgiveness. All through scripture although Baptism is not required for salvation it accompanies salvation because it is just expected Baptism is in the Name of Jesus Christ and identifies a person as dead to the world and alive in Christ. But again, Baptism does not save you

ESV39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Jesus promiced to send the spirit to dwell in those who belong in Him, enableing them to trust and follow Him as there savior and Lord
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
The Gift of the holy spirit is a wonderful blessing bestowed on anyone at the point of conversion.
The Promise is the gift of the Holy Spirit. This passage has sometimes been taken as a way to justify baptizing infents if we take it out of context. However, the point is to express the unlimited mercy of God which enbraces the current and future generations of decendents. In addition when the Jewish Mob called for Christ’s Crusifixion they called “His blood be on us and on our Children” Which lickly also could have been a conection here.

ESV40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
By Luke’s statement “With many other words” He indicates that this is a summary of Peter’s sermon and not the entirety of the message.
He wrote down the vital Parts. Peter stated “Be saved from this corrupt generation” He urges his hearers to hasten and not wait to be saved.

The reasult 41-43
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
ESV41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Many of those who herd Peter’s Sermon accepted what He said and indicated their acceptance by being Baptized.
the result was a large number of new converts were added to the Church.
The figure is large and is likely not an exact figure but how Luke describes it, either way the point is gotten that it is a very large figure. and it would not have been unusual for a crowd this large to gather especially at a large festival such as Pentecost.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
ESV42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Luke finishes with what happens to the new converts four activities are stated.
1.Teaching: They continued to learn under the teaching of the apposes
2. Fellowship: great quality of togetherness
3. Breaking of BreadPrayer: The early Christians knew that they could not meet life in their own strength and that they did not need to.
They always went to God before they went out to the world. Christians live in reverence because they know that the whole earth is the temple of the living God
