Colin Kruse
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: Paul’s Letter to the Romans B. The Believers’ Relationships with Others, 12:3–21

The passage may be analyzed as follows: using different gifts for the benefit of the Christian community (12:3–8); enhancing relationships within the Christian community (12:9–13); strengthening relationships without and within the Christian community (12:14–16); and responding to hostile people and their hostile acts (12:17–21).

so many ways to slice this… ESV headings…?

Romans 12:1–2 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
rom 12.1-2
How Paul…?
Romans 12:3–8 ESV
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Verse 3

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

External Interactions
V1 = appeal because of mercies of God
V3 = command
grace = his call to apostleship
Romans 1:5 ESV
5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,
V3 = command
command by the authority of Christ = I say to everyone
Humility / Pride
sober judgement = not to high / not to low
measure of faith = God has assigned
Ephesians 4:7 ESV
7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
a way to view ourself
a way to view others!!
Ch 11 the olive tree!!!
1 Corinthians 7:17 ESV
17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.

The Gospel of God: Romans Living Together as Christians (12:3–11)

If we want to keep things in perspective there are two things that we always have to remember. We have to remember first of all who God is, and second, we have to remember who we are.

Verse 4

For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function,

Teamwork = makes dream work…
blind, deaf, lame, mute… you wish!
necessity of function
Ephesians 4:16 ESV
16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Eph 4.165

Verse 5

so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

We
Paul included
believers
One Body in Christ!
Humility
individually = diversity, uniqueness, autonomy
one of another = dependance, interconnectedness,
John 17:11 ESV
11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.
Leon Morris

We should also bear in mind that “members” has no meaning apart from the body; one cannot be a “member” of nothing.

Verse 6

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;

Differing Gifts
according to Grace
Gifts = charismata - charismatic…
LET US USE THEM!!!
1 Peter 4:10 ESV
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
Leon Morris

Different brings out the truth that God does not make Christians into a collection of uniform automata. They differ from one another both in their native endowments and also in the gifts that God gives them through the Spirit. The differences are not arbitrary but according to the grace given us. The thought of grace persists. The apostle is not writing about some human excellence. And given is important. It is not a matter of the believer making an earnest effort in order to produce some spectacular result in Christian character or achievement, but something God has given.

Each of the Roman Christians has a gift and therefore a responsibility.

what good is a body part that does not function?
if a body part claims to be a part of the body ought it to work?
Job 1:21 ESV
21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Seven Gifts
1. Prophecy = in proportion to our faith
No-one in the NT has explained exactly what this is… generally a word from God
in accordance with God’s Word
faith has definite article = prophesy according to the teachings already recorded in Gods word “accordance with christian faith”
to no lesser or greater extent then alloted
does prophecy continue today…?
yes / no
Do I experience the uninitiated tug of the Holy Spirit to share God’s word with others randomly?

Verse 7

if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;

2. Service
= those waiting tables
diakonian = diakonos = deacon = servant
many different types of service
sweeping the floor - caring for infirm
Do I receive the Joy of the Lord when I am involved in hands on tasks for the sake of others?
3. Teaching
warning in James
James 3:1 ESV
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
discipleship = teaching
iron sharpening iron
position of oversight / process of education
Jms 3.1
Am I good at explaining the things of God in ways other people can understand?

Verse 8

Service

the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Peaceable
4. Exhorting = encourage, urge, console
Paul =
Barnabas = (son of encouragement)
oh my do people need this today!!
visitation = shut in, sick, jail, etc…
Do I often notice good traits, small victories, God’s quiet leading in the lives of others?
5. Contributes = Give, share
generously = “with one mind” / sincerity
do not give to get…
Luke 3:11 ESV
11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”
Do I see tangible needs in the lives of others sometimes even before they do?
6. Leadership = authority = guide, direct
you cannot lead if no-one will follow
someone has to lead… dangerous task
with ZEAL = eagerness, to do ones best, do quickly, with passion,
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Do I find myself longing to call others to pursue the things of God for the sake of His fame?
7. Acts of Mercy
Mercy = not getting what deserve
cheerfulness = without a grudge
Do I sense that my heart has a unique care for the broken and downtrodden around me?

The Gospel of God: Romans Living Together as Christians (12:3–11)

What if you don’t know what your gift is? I say to you, try different aspects of the life of the church. If you don’t know what your gift is, try being involved in evangelism, try being involved in Sunday School teaching. You may have to try a few things before you discover where your niche is. And listen to the body of Christ. The body of Christ will begin to communicate to you where your gift is, and where you can be used of God.

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, LET US USE THEM!
