Mark 4:35–41 NKJV
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Introduction
The Long, Hard Day of Preaching
The crowds so great He had to get into a boat
Just out from the land, He taught them (v. 1)
The Crowd Listens
All gathered along the beach
Some sit on the sand as close to the water as possible
Some let the waves creep over their feet to get relief from the heat of the day
Up the beach, some sit on driftwood and remains of boats
They hear about the sower, the lighted candle, and the mustard seed that is like the kingdom of God
Finally, Jesus and the Disciples are Alone
The adventure begins: the invitation, the storm, the miracle

Who can this Be?

What manner of man is this? (KJV)
He is a Man who Invites us to Travel with him (vv. 35–36)
He is with you always - We are invited to go with Him, as friends
“Let us pass over to the other side”
What an invitation! And a promise.
He makes a similar invitation to us all
An invitation loaded with promises
The promise of His fellowship on the journey
The promise of His fellowship on the other side
Not only is He with us for the journey, Then we will ever be with the Lord
The promise of safe passage to the other side
You’re going to make it!
If Jesus said we’re going to the other side, lets go! In faith.

The Christian Life

How like the Christian life this is
Here on this shore we are often weary
Jesus invites us to travel with Him to the other side
Those who accept His invitation will arrive safely
Though this world with devils filled, should threaten to undo us
We will not fear for God hath willed. . .
You’re going to the other side -

Jesus, who is with us in all life’s storms

He is a Man who is with us in all the Storms of Life (v. 37)
“And there arose a great storm of wind”
What a great storm it must have been!
The high wind … the rolling thunder … lightning
The waves beat into the ship
Of course this storm, as terrible as it was, is also symbolic of the many storms we face
Have you ever been in a storm of life?
Are you going through something now?

Those Sudden Storms

How powerful and devastating upheavals of nature can be!
It was not always so
The earth suffers from the fall of man
The earth in travail … earthquakes, etc. ()
Romans 8:22 NKJV
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.

There are Lessons in the storm

There is a lesson here: storms come to disciples
They were traveling with Jesus
So often people think if a storm comes,, they must have done something wrong
Or they don’t have God’s love and favor
They had obeyed Jesus, yet the storm came
And you may be passing through a storm, though His child
Don’t be discouraged
Don’t give up
stay in the boat
stay with Jesus

Purposes of storms

Jonah’s storm … to bring him from backsliding
Paul’s storm … to open new doors of witness
The disciples’ storm … to test their faith
what about your storm?

Jesus was with them in the storm

He is a Man who is up to the Occasion (vv. 38–40)
He was asleep, weary
Compare to , “neither is weary”
Isaiah 40:28 NKJV
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
Though He was tired as a man, He knew the Holy Spirit (God) was in Him -
Jesus was indeed a man (; )
Hebrews 4:14–16 NKJV
14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
heb

He arose: “Peace, be still” THERE WAS A GREAT CALM!

The waves ceased; the sea flattened
The moon broke through the clouds
He rebuked the wind, and spoke peace to the storm
“What manner of man is this?” (who can this be?)
Conclusion
Jesus and Today’s Storms
Jesus can Calm your Storm and give you Peace. Today
