Intercession

Definition

INTERCESSION Act of intervening or mediating between differing parties, particularly the act of praying to God on behalf of another person.

1 Tim2:5-6
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
1 Timothy 2:5–6 NIV
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.
It is Jesus who stands in the gap and who models intercession
Romans 8:34 NIV
34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
In fact he still is. He stands in the presence of God and in the position of authority and intercedes for us.

Identify

Genesis 18:23 NIV
23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
Abraham identified himself with the righteous here. He saw a problem and decided to approach God.

Identity

Do we have high knowledge and low expectations?
Story of the kids when they are young. Do not know much about me, but do have a high expectancy.
You have a greater knowledge of me but have a lesser expectancy.
Expectancy comes through relationship and not head knowledge.
Rom8:
Romans 8:15–16 NIV
15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
The more we understand and abide in our identity the more we will expect from God, all that he can do.

Elevate

Genesis 18:24 NIV
24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?
Bring the issue to God.
God doesn’t need to know a problem because he has missed anything.
He needs to know that we know there is a problem and are prepared to partner with him in the mission.
The Missio Dei is a partnership. A relationship of ridiculous imbalanced. We bring virtually nothing and he brings everything.

Perseverance pays off

Gen 18:32
Genesis 18:32 NIV
32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”
