God’s House: “They shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die.” Sin contaminates everything, makes us ”unclean” And when we drag mud into Gods house it harms our fellowship with God.

Psalmists Question
Psalm 24:3–4 NIV
Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.

Big Idea.

Who can ascend the mountain of God and in his presence stand? Jesus Christ The Lord can. The one who is pure in Heart and Has clean hands, he can stand in the presence of God. He is the Bronze Basin, and as the basin he can wash us clean so that you and I can serve God as his priests, and one day we too will be able to stand In God’s presence and see him as he is.
Sin contaminates everything, makes us ”unclean” And harms fellowship with God. Jesus cleanses/purifies us from from our sins making us clean before God so that we can continue to serve and worship him. The Bronze Basin is symbolic of the work of Jesus in our lives making us clean as we carry out our Christian service and worship of God.
The Basin
When we become Christians we are forgiven by God because Jesus suffered the consequence of our sin bearing the wrath if God. However we still sin in our daily lives, However If we are to serve God and c

Exposition

Exodus 30:17–21 NIV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it. Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it. Whenever they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the Lord, they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”

The routine of a priest.

The Process

(Explain What they did)
NIVWhenever they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the Lord, they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”

Ceremonially clean: The Priests had already been ceremonilally washed by Moses in 29 when they were commissioned for service. (Presumably their whole body as they were putting on the priestly clothes) They have in some sense already been made right with God through being washed. However, The daily duties of the temple would have made them dirty, Hands and Feet.
Exodus 30:20–21 NIV

The Basin was Highly Reflective Burnished Bronze metal made from the mirrors of woman who served outside the courtyard.
Practical Purpose and a Spiritual Purpose.
Germs and Hygene: God knew about germs long before we did. (They would wash their hands and feet after handling sacrifices and walking the floor).
Spiritual - The priests guilt because of sin was dealt with at the alter of Sacrifice, yet it seems that something more was required for continued effective service and fellowship in God‘s house.
Basin was Highly Reflective Burnished Bronze metal made from the mirrors of woman who served outside the courtyard. They would see their mucky filthy reflection as they approached the basin to wash Their hands and feet.
You wanna serve God you have to be clean! - From this common sense about dirt, God taught his people, through these commands that related directly to the priests who served in the tabernacle and/or its courtyard, that his holiness demands purity. Things and people brought close to his presence could not be sloppy, imperfect, common or dirty.”, The hands that touched the sacrifices or the feet that walked into the tabernacle had to be washed to remove dirt and to make the priest symbolically pure before God so as to be able to serve worthily in his house.

The Basin Points to Jesus. (Lets turn to Jesus now)
The Basin points us to Jesus.

Jesus

John 13:3–11 NIV
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
Jesus picks up a basin and a towel, and washes the Discples feet.
Peters Objection and Jesus’s Response.
“Those who have had a bath are already clean”, In some ways we are like the priests. serving in the Temple. (symbolised by baptism)
“Unless I wash you, you can have no part with me”
Those who have had a bath are clean Believers have been cleansed by the blood of Christ.
This symbolised by our basptism. (
Yet daily we need to turn to God for daily cleansing if we are to serve God. “Unless I wash you, you can have no part with me” The provision of daily cleansing is ours in Jesus.we need to turn daily to God for cleansing.
The provision of cleansing is ours in Jesus.
Yet daily we need to turn to God for cleansing. The provision of cleansing is our in Jesus.
When we look at Jesus we see ourselves as we are.
When we look at Jesus we see ourselves as we are.
Our sin harms fellowship with God. Jesus cleanses/purifies us from from our sins making us clean before God so that we can continue to serve and worship him. The Bronze Basin is symbolic of the work of Jesus in our lives making us clean as we carry out our Christian service and worship of God.
Jesus is the Basin.
Jesus is like a mirror. When we look at Jesus, his love, his sinlessness, his purity, we see ourselves as we are!
When we look at Jesus we see ourselves as we are.
Jesus is the Basin! How does Jesus wash our hands and feet today? Through his Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit.

Daily Confession and Repentance, Calvin (The spirit leading prompting not Condemning)
Washing of the Word.
James 1:23–25 NIV
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
Christian Community and service. (without it your growth and sanctification will be Stunted)
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God anwas returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Application and Challenge.

Non Christians
Jesus command, Let me wash you.
Jesus commands men everywhere to repent and be baptised, “Let him wash you”
Christians
Jesus says “unless I wash Your feet you can have not part with me” Are you cultivating a lifestyle of confession and repentance?
2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
The Basin and the Towel is also a call to Christian community, God does his transforming purifying work in the the midst of Christian community. DAY AFTER DAY WE MUST TAKE UP THE BASIN AND THE TOWEL.

The Good News

1 John 1:9 NIV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
If we confess our Sins, He is faiΤΗ

Who can ascend the mountain of God and in his presence stand? Jesus Christ The Lord can.
