Exodus 33:1 ESV
1 The Lord said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’
Following the people turning to Idols and those people being executed it was now time for them to leave where they had been staying.
Exodus 33:2 ESV
2 I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
Two very significant things to point out in this verse.
#1. God said he would send an angel before them. God had been going before them Himself up until this point.
#2. He said He would drive out all of the different people before them… If you study this History you will see that the Israelites still needed to fight the battle…
This is significant because, God doesn’t ever just do everything for His people, but He promises to work on behalf of His people when His people are working for Him.
Think about evangelism… God tells us to pray for workers in the harvest, and to be seed sowers and he would give the harvest… We don’t see people showing up and baptizing themselves… but every single year on campaign when we do what we are commanded to do, we see people being converted to Jesus.
V.4-6- When the people heard that God Himself was not going to be in their presence any longer, they mourned.
Exodus 33:7 ESV
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
If you recall earlier in our studies we read about the tent of meeting being in the midst of the people and Aaron or his sons would keep a lamp burning to light the way to God.
Now, because of the sin of Israel, God would no longer dwell in their midst. They had to go outside the camp to meet Him.
Exodus 33:11 ESV
11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
First notice the phrase “face to face” It doesn’t mean that Moses saw God’s face. In fact, the text later proclaims that no one ever saw God’s face.
It literally meant that they spoke “Mouth to mouth” meaning, It wasn’t a dream but that God opened his mouth and Moses heard his voice.
Notice what the text reveals to us about Moses’ assistant Joshua… he would not leave the tent of meeting...
Why is it that Joshua was chosen to lead Israel when Moses was dying? Moses had a brother, and nephews… why was his mere assistant chosen? Because his assistant was one who sought the Lord.
- Moses is pleading with God to change His mind. To not just send them out but for Him to go with them.
Exodus 33:17 ESV
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
Notice what God says that is a little odd… I know you by name.
Sometimes it is easy for us to forget that God is a personal God. Not just “The God of the world” - He knows your name.
Do you know everyone’s name that worships here? - God knows your name.

Exodus 33:20 ESV
20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”
Moses asked God to let him see His face… God told him no one could see his face and live
- even the angelic creatures covered their face in His presence.
V.1-9- God has Moses bring two new tablet’s because he broke the last ones. It was important for them to have a written law.
It is also significant that God is the one who wrote them. These were not man’s laws, but they came from God himself ()
Exodus 34:10 ESV
10 And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.
God makes a covenant with His people.
Exodus 34:12 ESV
12 Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst.
Later on, Joshua makes a covenant with outsiders and it causes major problems for the Nation of Israel
V.11-28 - God reminds Israel of specific commands that they are to follow. It was a reminder of their part of the covenant.
Exodus 34:29 ESV
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.
Because Moses spent time in God’s presence, it changed His appearance. So much so that it was noticeable.
When we spend time with God, do we let Him change us? Is it noticeable?
